@@-hw- Indigenous means the people of the land. Or as we say here in Aotearoa: Tangata Whenua (people of the land). They were here before the Europeans came and colonised. It's not as strong as it once was because of colonisation... You know, the usual stuff, oppression, land theft, restriction of language, etc, but despite that, Maori have kept fighting and now we are in the process of decolonisation: we have a long way to go!!!! But the language is being revived, hopefully our children will have to learn it throughout school soon. The truth of NZ's history is being more widely acknowledged, and people are fighting for Maori rights - land rights and more... We have a lot of work to do! Anyway, the point is that Maori are Aotearoa (new Zealand) indigenous people.

It's crazy to see how many ingredients aren't from New Zealand too. Corn, squash, potatoes, yams, they're all from North America. To be specific, they are crops that were developed by indigenous First Nations in what is now Canada, the US and Mexico. And then of course there is mutton and pork, as anything with 4 legs and fur isn't from New Zealand either. But that's what culture and cuisine are- change. Change with the times, change with the circumstance. As a Canadian of first nations ethnicity, it's beautiful to see the crops we cultivated, that were then stolen/adopted by Europeans, nourish another indigenous group halfway across the world. Meegwetch.

So kind and generous and trusting! I was invited to dinner by multiple families, held babies, was invited to join a great walk, my travel itinerary was developed by people passing around a map on the plane! Then we landed in Auckland and people called and made sure we were doing well as we traveled for the month in a campervan. Absolutely the best trip of my life! So many amazing beautiful people!

Many of them were highly experienced too, having fought in the Crimean war. Also not true about selling muskets. The Maori already had massive stockpiles from previous trading, which were used in a nationwide Maori civil war. Which is how they were so well adapted to gunpowder warfare when they then fought the British. The conflict was ended because the Mario guerilla campaign was too successful.

I spent a month in NZ and it felt like sheep were everywhere. I can't believe that they used to have way more! NZ was just as beautiful as Canada (and maybe a bit more!). We went to a traditional Maori celebration and it was amazing. Such wonderful people!

I love Māori culture. As someone from Ayiti (Haiti) with Taino (Arawak) and West African ancestry it makes so proud to see people continue to keep their traditions, languages and overall culture alive. Colonialism, capitalism and the individualistic culture that Europeans & North Americans have is not for us.
