Steiner truly deserved this win! He did it for his country and he did it for his fallen wife who died in a car crash in 2007... truly inspiring... 🥺 👍

How funny. German commentary from that time: ""Lift it up, Lift iI Up, LIFT IT UP!!! (pause) HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR AUSTRIA, HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR GERMANY! HE HAS DONE THIS FOR SUSANNE! AND MATTHIAS STEINER IS AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION!"

Just like his coach said, it’s those moments that define a top athlete’s career. That was his moment, and he seized it. His life would have probably been just fine if he missed the lift, in all honesty. Instead, he performed under the pressure, and made his life even better.

Notice how Chigishev asks Steiner about the photo at 1:20:42 and see his reaction. He seems genuinely surprised and moved by the background story of Steiner's wife having died in a car accident and Steiner wanting her photo with him on the podest. It shows the mutual respect among the two athletes.

You could tell Chigishev had so much respect for Steiner. Steiner was lifting so much more than the weight itself, but the worst pain a husband could ever go through as well.

1:20:44 the trainer giving Matthias the photograph of his wife and Matthias explaining to the russian guy what this is is a beautiful moment
This is the Olympics at it's best. Evgeny Chigishev seem to be the "better" more consistent lifter, but in that one moment Matthias Steiner was able to do something extra ordinary and take the gold. Even the look from the Russian was one of "fair enough". Then when you add in Matthias' story it just becomes something that I come back to watch ever now and then, as it's just so compelling.

I like to think that nearly everyone in that room, including his competition was overjoyed and inspired by Steiner’s win. For he wasn’t just lifting that weight alone, but also a deep and internal weight, the worst pain a husband could ever go through. He didn’t lift it for himself or for his country. He lifted for the love of his wife who tragically died a year earlier. That alone made his winning lift all the more beautiful, powerful, and inspiring for everyone who witnessed it. He not only lifted so much physically, but mentally and emotionally, all the grief, the pain, the loneliness, the agony. Solely motivated by the love for his late wife and the promise he made to her.
Watching it again. what a magnificent scene.
The moment I watched the animated version of this, I came here to watch the real one. Btw the animated version its makes you drop some tears. Very emotional.

Me gustó la participación del ruso, él y su equipo ya se hacían con el oro y se lo merecía, porque no falló en nada. Pero de pronto aparece Matthias y logra lo que parecía imposible y aparte su historia es muy triste.
Every emotional story
Chigichev was unfortunate really he was in a grey area 15/20kg to big for 105kg and at least 10kg to light for 105+kg still 460kg at 124kg is amazing steiner just had a helping hand that day no doubt

You can never play safe cause you'll never know the potential of your opponent in Olympics. I bet the Russian is capable of lifting heavier than 250.
@mentalmike
3 жыл бұрын
That was his PB, he wasn't playing it safe at all. His 247 "should" have been enough to win the gold, let alone setting a new PB to increase the gap even further. Imagine it would have been way harder to take if he went for heavier, dropped it and then lost to a smaller weight. On this occasion he just lost to something extraordinary 🙂
