Matthew McConaughey On The Art Of Livin’

Ryan speaks with Matthew McConaughey in the second of a two-part interview about his new course: Roadtrip - the Highway to More, the importance of being close to the ones you love, the sense of oneness that comes with zooming out your lens, why he is striving to be less impressed and more involved, and more.
Matthew McConaughey has been working in Hollywood for over 25 years, appearing in acclaimed films, including Interstellar, A Time to Kill, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club. His work in the latter film won him the 2013 Academy Award for Best Actor. McConaughey also works as a producer and spokesperson, and recently released his first book, the bestselling memoir Greenlights. He also founded and runs the Just Keep Livin Foundation to help kids lead active and healthy lifestyles. You can follow his work on Twitter @McConaughey, Instagram @officiallymcconaughey, and KZread at Matthew Mcconaughey, and you can find his Roadtrip course at artoflivineven...

This is why I listen to McConaughey. He is my people and we have the same philosophy on life and raising children - while we as adults are still growing as people and parents. I do believe that being financially stable really helps being calm and enjoying life to the fullest. The trick is to keep this way of life on a consistent basis while juggling life's tough challenges. Thank you Matthew for investing in speaking truths and sharing your philosophy on life.

To the commenters saying that it’s EASY to be a Stoic when you have lives like “Ryan and Matty,” this is my response: I’m a Stoic, and I lost a brilliant son at age 26 just preceding his grad. from Georgetown with 2 Masters. He had a heart attack. Our 35 yo son completed his BS in Rome for a year but returned with paranoid schizophrenia and vanished in 2019. Police refuse to help because adults can do what they please, even though he was unable to take care of himself. I was closest to him out of the 6 kids and he’s either dead or homeless. I’m also 75% deaf so I can’t make phone inquiries. He had been an editor and an award-winning potter. My 10 year battle with breast cancer just ended, but I was sick from the chemo the whole time. Another son is back living with us after his marriage ended. I’m bedridden with a rare neurological disorder called RSD that doctors call “the suicide disease” because it’s #1symptom is unbearable pain. It’s concentrated in my feet so I can’t walk. Normally I travel with my husband to the 35 countries where he has work, but no more. Lastly, as part of the bigger issues, my husband and partner, the great love of my life has thyroid cancer - but as a separate case from his Stage 4 prostate cancer. Each level of therapy finally fails. We live in a 14 room, 350 year old house, after 35 years of constant work, a showpiece but with lots of stairs. My point is this: we laugh ALL the time, we’re very clear which camp each thing belongs in regarding control, and we use our money to work on the rest. We’ve let go of some dreams, like retiring in Vienna, but our 2 acres is a paradise. I’m counting on getting better because I will need to step up maybe next year. I never stop trying the next thing, never stop studying intractable pain. All of the above is not inconsistent with Stoicism. It just gives me constant practice! I am so grateful I found it when I did; I used to cry all day, all the time. Even my dentist commented today how much happier I seemed (husband drives and I use 2 canes. My entire mouth is getting implants from what chemo did to my teeth!) Not sleeping most nights gives me the opportunity to watch KZread Premium without my cats always blocking my iPad screen. I used to want to jump in front of a train, having RSD since 2007. It’s quite a powerful thing for a philosophy to completely turn that around. I am calm about these things now. Thank you for bringing Stoicism to the masses, Ryan.

People will gaslight us and call us selfish when all we are doing is self preservation and fixing ourselves, which in the end has a spill over effect which contributes to being better for our family and friends and our community! On subject of an emergency on an aircraft, they tell people to fix their own oxygen mask to their own face first before attempting to save others, charity starts at home, and we focus on what we can control and change, which is our own actions, behaviour and attitude. Thats not to say we dont help others when it is in our power, for most of us, its our instinct to help others around us when it is within our power.

To be fair to the pilots who flew in the thunderstorm. Airlines flights are conducted in (all weather operations) jets. It means that the big jets can sustain a very very harsh weather. Also, you must follow airways ( works like roads really) that can guarantee radial navigation coverage. The pilots couldn’t deviate without permission from ATC unless it was an emergency where the pilots are authorized to break any rule to the extent of the emergency. Now, the pilots should’ve anticipated the bad weather since they had radar coverage that shows thunderstorms and even wind shears. Thus, they should’ve ask the passengers and cabin crew to have their seatbelts on and delay food services. This is coming from a pilot by the way.

So, I have been enjoying your channel so far, and while I truly understand what you are trying to give to us with knowledge and wisdom from interviews, yourself and history. I feel like this might be something some don't know or understand and yes I should just gloss over this. However, your example of things going on in the world and country, and things we fear "the country is flooded with assault rifles" which assault rifle isn't a thing, long rifles or sport rifles are though, there is the AR=15 which stands for ArmaLite Rifle. But, either way I don't see how this is a thing to fear? They are mainly owned by law abiding citizens that just want either for protection, hunting, or just for the sport. They are something that woman can fire far more easily and accurately, which is the goal in a life or death situation. Also there are FAR more hand guns in this country and those are the major weapons CRIMINALS use against society. The fact that about 3% of "assault rifles" are used in crimes and murders should tell you it's not the weapon, it's the user of the weapon. Just like vehicular homicide, the car didn't kill anyone without a driver. Now, I do agree there is a gun violence in this country, but if we are being honest most of that is gang related and depending on your definition of mass shooting. One such being is 4 or more people injured in a single shooting. So, on June 19th, during a celebration, 22 people were injured and one little girl was killed while taking a nap in the back seat of the car. This was in Chicago, they have some of the most strict gun laws on the books and some of the highest offenders. Can't say the guns are from outside the state, because why are those areas not affected like Chicago? I would imagine few have heard about this story or the other mass shootings that happen almost every weekend in Chicago. But, i repeat, you never hear about these crimes/tragedies. I truly get this is a blurb of a moment in this 2 hour interview, but from all I have heard from your words and videos, I figured maybe someone, including yourself might gain some different perspective on the situation that is parroted purposefully or not by so many. We are programed by what we do.

I wish I wouldn't have watched this, because I've always thought McConaughey was a decent actor, but this interview is a turn off. What's with the know it all, self righteous crap. And really, all those thoughts in such detail went through M's head during some turbulence?

Yeah.. how about you add a normal human experience in this talk... Both of you haven't experienced hardship compared to 99% of life... Both of you have had the freedom of time to think. None of us have had the opportunity to. He said "how dare you think" ? I could say the same .

Can't help but agree with you. Ryan has to pay his bills, but this and some of his other endeavors (Koch interview) are misguided, despite being a younger role model for me.

Isnt it nice to watch a human being with millions and millions of dollars talk about life ? Sure, I know he have had more time to think about life, then the rest of us have had, he clearly has a voice and insights. But, he has people that take care of him. He pays people to feed him !! Whats interesting is talking to people who are alive.. he isnt. Being alive isnt him. Does he know what it means to useless? Does he know what it means to be nothing? Last.. I know i should listen and try to understand him. But i simply dont want to and i can't. Please do better... remember your power.
