OMG, the bass tonal and rhythmic palette is superb. Jonas the maestro. An ideal match for Matteo's brilliance.

Why do we have to compare this guy with others? Let’s just enjoy his marvellous playing. He’s obviously enjoying it!

Words are totally lacking when it comes to describing my appreciation of Matteo's brilliance. May he live long and burn with the light of a thousand stars. 🙏

When I first heard Matteo I was simply stunned at how great of a guitarist he was. His style of guitar encompasses so many styles and yet it is so unlike anything we have heard or seen before. Someone like Matteo who has such skills and knowledge and breathtaking technique only comes along maybe once in a lifetime. I'm 70 and have spent nearly my whole life in music playing guitar and being able to see and listen to so many other wonderful musicians and never have I been so taken with the incredible ability on so many levels that this young man has. He is truly one of a kind and I hope he a has a long and happy life and career.

classical players have the hardest time to understand improv because they aren't taught how to improvise at all. That's something you have to do on your own or through a separate teacher. You could argue experience, but dude is only 26, what experience would he have because a lot of self-study or teacher(s)? @@ScaleScarborough-jq8zx

You can hear Guthrie play at this same age. That’s the age when he wrote a lot of the material from "Erotic Cakes" (early 1990s) and it was released at that time. Guthrie was better compositionally at that age than Mancuso, though Mancuso is technically better. The Guthrie from that age was sloppier and more of a hard rock player. What they seem to have in common is that neither is great compositionally.

It’s awesome that Jonas Hellborg plays with great guitarists like John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane (RIP), and, now, Mr. Mancuso. Amazing performance.

My thoughts were on the same track. Hellborg has a pretty good resume'. The improvisation that he did with Lane and Sipe, though is something unique. Mancuso is obviously a generational artist. One might wonder what might happen if he could hang out with Hellborg for awhile - that could be interesting.

Ho appena finito di sentire un disco di Howard Roberts vado su youtube e trovo questo. Wow! Splendida mezz'ora di jazz. Non capisco quelli (pochi invero) che sentono solo il virtuosismo di Mancuso. Il suo soloing è molto musicale. Suona con gusto. E questo oggi (viviamo in un'era intossicata dal virtuosismo fine a se stesso) è assai raro. La tecnica stellare di Mancuso è qui al servizio della musica. Come deve essere.

compliemti hai trovato la giusta osservazione sul virtuosismo per fare spettacolo. L'abilità deve sempre essere sempre al servizio della musica. Chi ascolta non è un chitarrista ma una persona che vuole ascoltare musica e Mancuso usa la sua straordinaria abilità e sensibilità musicale per offrire vera musica all'ascolto

Molto vero, Matteo cerca sempre una cantabilitá nei suoi "solo" e si capisce meglio ascoltandolo ad occhi chiusi perché guardandolo rimani stupito dal modo tutto personale di suonare. Un Grande!!!

I’m guessing you never saw Eddie Van Halen perform live or on video. He was fairly impressive. Maybe you need to be a young buck when one of the “once every decade” wizards I’ve been fortunate to experience. Come on …McLaughlin? Where is he in your continuum. Let me ask all of you. Who is Ted Greene? Have you ever watched him improvise for 45 minutes and have it never cease to surprise and make you mumble things you’ve never knew you had to express before. Ted Greene author of “CHORD CHEMISTRY “. A must have study guide for harmony studies.

Mancuso is a generation leader. You don't get too many guitarists like him. He's already legendary in my book. His playing is unlike anything we've seen before.

I stick with if music can’t be hummed it’s just for music majors. Music should be enjoyable for everyone. Sure music majors can make music for each other and wank away 1000 notes per second together. Niche music is great. Skill doesn’t equal listenability. This is a good example of that. If a guitar player is bored imagine what the Lindas in the crowd are thinking. Poor Lindas 😂

I totally agree. He is a generation leader (to us now) or will become one later. I just want to add that Guthrie Govan, if put in addition to Matteo next to Hellborg, would play as skilled but probably would insert some more unexpected licks, chords, melody lines. But Guthrie has had a couple of more years of playing and experimenting. Matteo will be able to do this with time and experience. His right hand finger picking technique is sure to make it in to the future of guitar playing techniques that has been dominated by the pick or hybrid picking techniques over the past decades

Superb, simply superb! Matteo is the new star on the guitar scene for good reason. I hope he'll be delighting us for decades to come. Jonas is already famous and has played with the very best of the best. What a great pairing!

Non pensavo che dopo tutti questi anni, rivedessi suonare Jonas Hellborg con il nostro grande Matteo Mancuso. 2:51- I've recently been enjoying improvising over Cantaloupe Island myself and loving the change to Db7 in particular (I play Db Lydian dominant over it, mostly). Here I am being very proud of myself and then I hear Matteo just knock it out of the park on so many levels. Incredible musician.

I was there too and it was one of the best gigs I been to. Comparable to holdsworth, and I don't say that lightly. Would have loved to see him with Jonas, one of the few guys that could possibly play a Shawn Lane tune properly.

I think you just summarized part of the reason Matteo's music is -- to me -- extremely boring. Outside from wanting to hear his technique in action, I can't imagine wanting to listen to a Hellborg recording with Matteo on lead guitar. Just so dry and emotionless.
