• MATT SORUM Interview o...
Matt has been the drummer for The Cult, Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver and Kings of Chaos to name a few. Whether it's the epic percussive backdrop behind Guns N' Roses' "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or the propulsive punked-out beat fueling Velvet Revolver's "Dirty Little Thing," Sorum's playing remains unique, undeniable and unforgettable. Sorum's presence extends far beyond the kit though.

Nah I think he gets more recognition than his true abilities, Matt is a very basic rock drummer..Tommy Lee any day.

Matt plays a lot of styles besides rock, check out his jazz and big band stuff. I love Tommy as a rock drummer but for me they both bring something different. Check out Guns Spagetti incident Down om the farm. Great groove and great hi hat I reckon.

Mine too. Matt is a very refined player, but Steven was pure guts and heart. I think over the years Matt loosened up a bit, like in Velvet Revolver, and even the later stuff he did with The Cult.

Totally. I'm glad that Matt isn't hung up on the current "big kits are for wankers' attitude. It seems like SO many drummers are now trying to make their kits smaller in order to look cool. Frig, tons of guys don't even want to be seen with even 2 rack toms. It is a shame, in my opinion. You don't need a giant kit..but you need options.

Always liked his interviews and his role in VR in their Behind the Music episode on them. Wondered why he didn’t recruit Ian for a VR reboot. Would be fuckin KICK ASS. Always thought Ian was totally underrated as a vocalist.

Funny as a KID and a wanna be drummer just starting out it wasn’t until seeing, hearing AFTER I was told that Matt when joining GNR was playing double bass on a SINGLE bass drum. My step sister (old by 3 yrs) told me that he was playing double bass. I was like nahhh that’s a single bass drum. If he is and it sounded like it to me that it def was a double bass drum sound, how the hell is he pulling it off with a single bass drum. Even funnier it was the first time I was introduced to Matt being a part of GNR. AND AGAIN it was my step sister that informed me that Steven was out and Matt was in. I wasn’t excepting this piece of info at all. I was SO SOOOO PISSED OFF that her and I almost DID NOT talk through out my complete weekend with my dad and HIS second attempt at getting HIS life in order. Anyways BACK TO LIFE and real life that is LMFAO...... Again I just didn’t and couldn’t figure out HOW drummers could and would be making this sound possible on a DRUM KIT that wasn’t at all. I just didn’t get it at all. Lol. Cuz I had been watching Nicki from Maiden do the same thing. You know that double bass sound with a single bass drum. So I thought he was doing that and his feet were as fast as Nicko’s was. We argued for days (remember this was like 1992/3 era, not internet and no GOOGLE so I couldn’t go let’s see and look it up) then I saw a picture or actually it was a video of a drummer (not Matt) playing and that same sound came out and the cameras went to show the guy playing drums and they happened to pan the camera down to his feet and show his set up (I don’t know how new the single/double bass kicker was in ‘92/‘93 era but was new to me). EDIT: I had to edit this cuz I hit the “arrow” when I was trying to get the cursor at the end of the line from the message. For some reason I wanted to point that out lol.

For me being a Drummer. The gift given to me from God in Heaven. I have always liked Playing on a Big Drum set. BUT. at the some-time. I can Play on a Small one also. But for me the Bigger they were years ago when i started playing helped me to understand how to really Play with a Small Drum-Set When the other Pieces were not there. EMPROVISE!

because he ordered his toms in traditional sizes. you can go even lower depth than that if you choose something like a tama hyper-drive (14x8). makes sense, sounds good and very comfortable, if you ask me.
