A balance of listening to the phrasing and remaining somewhat unphased in the counting. Too much of one and it’s easy to get lost. The right amount of both and the passages are clear, like melodies

Animals as Leaders is not mainstream in any sense and their fanbase largely consists of people who are musically inclined in some form, so they expect to hear something new every time. Everyone in the band changes the parts all the time, not just Matt.

It’s a drum break in the song. Even on the album it’s a drum solo section. So people who say this don’t really know what they talkin about. You don’t play a basic 4/4 boring ass beat during the drum break solo of the song when you got skills like garstka. Maybe you would play beginner beat for a drum solo and get boo’d off the stage but real drummers don’t. People pay to see animals and anticipate these solo parts. They are an instrumental band and one of if not the best most technical

It's just cause it's live. The general tendency of this band is to be on the more reserved and easily intelligible side on the track and be on the more technical side live. It gets people, mainly musicians, coming to the shows.

He’s very skilled, but even he would bow to Matt. He says himself that he lacks in ability for odd timings and polyrhythms, while he praises Matt for being a true genius where he lacks ability. Estepario sounds robotic in comparison to Matt, but almost all drummers do. He feels rhythm like no other drummer I am aware of. I would recommend Matt’s “795 Trinity Loop” video, or his “Reincarnate - Mastering Time 3” to truly get a look into his inhuman ability.
