Matt Calder: Artist in Wood
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
East Devon artist and musician Matt Calder turns sculptural forms using spalted beech and sycamore, inspired by his experience of Japanese ceramics. Matt has a particular passion for "things inside things inside things..." originally inspired by his wife's pregnancy, and in this film he makes an egg form.

So beautiful!
Love the woodgrain in the pieces.
Thank you Matt you have inspired me to try new turning and sculptures exciting !
Amazing Piece and interesting process, thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Very Nice work looking very good!!!💯👌👍
Wow, inspiring & beautiful 💛
Very nice work. My compliments
Awesome!
totally inspiring - the lathe is such an under used tool as a form of artistic expression. Most turners can't see beyond bowls, snowmen and bloody gonks!

Thank you very much!
This is so neat! The final product he made in the video would be really cool to have an Edison bulb in it and use it as a decorative lamp 😍 but either way it’s a beautiful Work of art! Great job!

Matt, what wood is best for a full size head sculpture in the UK, apart from Basswood? Hand tools only...Thank you.
The music sounds like it's a hang or handpan if anyone's curious

Matt... What did you apply to the carving re finish ? It was liquid, and you had gloves on (!) 👀 I have Bees, so hope to make some Wooden Items, (using Timber from Storm Arwen) that took my ancient Cherry Tree down. Lots of branches for Spoons, Trunk for maybe a Table Top, and Benches. Have Beeswax, alas Bees will not have Cherry Blossom anymore. So need to use this lovely wood wisely ! Hope you can advise on what you used making such a nice finish... 😎 Lovely items by the way. 👍

Hi - I use Rustins Danish Oil for finishing.
Really great work Matt. When you say “green” wood, how green? Have you ever cut down a tree and started turning a piece from that fell immediately? Or do you just hunt for fallen logs and use “whatever” it’s state is at the time? Thanks. Really great!

Thanks Tom. Yes, I've worked many pieces straight from a freshly felled tree - although stable woods such as Sycamore are best for this - most of the time leaving a log out in the weather helps to stabilize the fibres of the timber - particularly more volatile woods like Oak.
Last time I had a go on a wood lathe the chisel stuck in the roof
