Sanding with the Fein Multimaster
Groove sanding with the Fein Multimaster and a custom made tool I wish they offered. The tool demonstrated here has been an integral process tool in much of my work since I started sculpting. Maybe I should make and sell it myself!

Wow what a simple but clever idea it seems like the figure it out stuff always works and usually much better than the store-bought, but I don’t need to tell you you’ve already figured it out good job thanks for the info.

thanks a lot for the tips!!!
Thanks Salem, that tip on the bicycle tube and the 3m spray is awesome. All my other sanding attempts with my fein would heat up the attachment and the sandpaper would just sort of melt off. Thanks so much for sharing. Your pieces are beautiful.

Thanks. The adhesion is strong enough for the work, and weak enough to be removed easily. As with all my use of abrasives, I prefer sharp paper and frequent paper changes. Heating the wood affects the finish because the resins/sap get cooked. Dull paper also burnishes the wood instead of cutting it.
Beautiful bro!!!

Great ideas, Salem. I am frugal also, so these tips will help me, for sure. :D
Your work is just amazing. I have a huge piece of Lignum Vitae measuring approximately 15 inches tall by 12 inches wide. It's perfectly cylindrical. I treasure it but want to make something worthwhile out of it so I appreciate seeing your work.

@@SalemBarker Thank you so much for your reply and for directing me to your video on Lignum Vitae. It's simply stunning. I think I might give it a go but don't expect to get such a result. I recently bought the Merlin wood carving set but I'll experiment on a less unique piece of wood first.
great to see you doing videos again! some nice sanding tips and I would love to see how you make the discs for the long necked proxxon. that's one of my go-to tools but the pads are always rubbish.

I'll have to try that multimaster approach. I wonder how long hook and loop would last on there. I like the little wavy edge discs in a drill and recently got the Arbortech contour sander. I was pretty skeptical about it but it does a nice job.
@SalemBarker

I don't have their contour sander yet but it's been recommended to me a few times so I think I'll get one. Hook & Loop would work fine since that's how the Multimaster sanding tools usually adhere. I like sharp paper and change so frequent that I imagine H&L would get pricey. I'm cheap.

I don't know how often they do this, but a guy from Arbortech actually came right to my shop and let me try out all their stuff. I happen to live near one of them so it worked out easily but if you shoot them an email you might be able to arrange something when they are in your area.

your artwork is shocking and beautiful! I am currently learning power carving and I'm working a piece using the basic form of your cocobolo piece. I just got a arbortech ball carver onto my grinder and I'm accelerating! I would love to know how you make your arbors for your sanders and will be on the lookout for a video of your stages of finish (sanding to different grits, to your finish process, or processes...

I am always looking for better ways to sand my sculptures and bowls. I want to get the proxxon mini angle grinder but it looks like it might be under powered for carving. Do you have any problems with that? I love all your work by the way

The Merlin from King Arthur's Tools is superior to the Proxxon Long Neck Angle Grinder, but i generally only use either for sanding and cutting with a saw blade. The Arbortech Mini Grinder is my best for grinding. They call it "grinding" but it's actually cutting. Grinding is abrasive stock removal.
Fantastic. Thank you. Can you please me the purpose of drilling a hole in the lower part of the tool you made with tyre rubber & sandpaper?

That's where the screw goes through the hole to mount it to the Multimaster.

I never got around to doing the video but I would like to. If you own one of these grinders, you can simply use a 4mm screw to fasten pieces of plastic from old credit cards or such things, then glue a layer of foam rubber to it. Use aerosol spray adhesive to continually apply fresh sandpaper to the foam. This gives the opportunity to create profiles by custom shaping the sanding discs.

PROXXON mini grinder vs MERLIN2 mini grinder, In your opinion which one do you think is better?
@SalemBarker
8 ай бұрын
Definitely the Merlin. I've had to change circuit boards, power switches, power cords, and spindle bearings numerous times in three proxxons, but the Merlin has needed nothing in three years of regular use.
more about the arbors please..?
