Powercarving: Red Birch Laminate

Birch wood is naturally blonde in color, and accepts dye very well. Thin layers are soaked in dye, then laminated into a plywood. This construct makes a great sculpting medium.
All grinders I use for sculpting are used with a "router speed control", or "electronic speed controller" in order to slow their RPM's. I recommend this.

"This is going to turn into a sculpture" and I'm going to hang on for the ride? You're very fortunate to find so many pieces of wood that turn into stunning works of art!To be able to hang on to them whilst it happens makes you special. To paraphrase Steven King's Gunslinger "I don't carve with my hands,I carve with my eye."

This video is another level in teaching. Super helpful on the how-to, but also how to think. I also love how you bungie down your piece to hold it. Genius! So, I went to the Cousineau Wood product website to check it out, but could only find their 'Veneer sheets'. Lots of goodies there. Also, I loved the base of this sculpture. How was that done? (rough idea) Thanks again!

The Lignum Vitae was finished with boiled linseed oil thinned with mineral spirits. This birch laminate was finished with 2 coats of Ilva's Vinyl Sealer, then sanded before finishing with Ilva's TSG5030 Wet Look Acrylic Urethane.

Its as plain as concrete but the construction grade is great for sculpting. Here's my biggest one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zm2qqNeAlsuzfbA.htmlsi=94Alc2Q8bYAGaYkh My friend, Jason Quigno is highly talented with Indiana Limestone. Tell Myles I said hello. I'll be at the Naples show in a month. They're moving it from 5th Ave to Cambier Park from now on. I guess the businesses don't like us closing the street.
