Despite a slow start, Subriel Matias turns up the heat and forces Jeremias Ponce's corner to wave off the fight after the conclusion of the fifth round of their IBF World Junior Welterweight Championship. Matias wins by TKO5 and improves to 19-1 (19 KOs).
Power-punching Subriel Matias showed why he’s become one of boxing’s most vaunted knockout artists as he stopped the previously unbeaten Jeremias Ponce after four rounds to win the vacant IBF 140-pound World Championship Saturday night live on SHOWTIME from The Armory in Minneapolis.
Puerto Rico’s Matias (19-1, 19 KOs) captured the title in an electric firefight that saw the two top-ranked super lightweights throw over 800 combined punches in five rounds according to CompuBox. For Matias, the victory culminated a long journey that had him away from his family for nearly a year as he trained in Mexico for his first title opportunity.
“I'm on cloud nine right now,” said Matias. “I don't think I've woken up from this dream. Maybe I can tell you how it feels tomorrow, but right now, it's a dream come true. I wanted to work him from the first round on, because I knew he wouldn't have the same power as me as the fight went on.”
Ponce (30-1, 20 KOs) came out extremely aggressive and looked to swarm Matias early as he threw 96 punches in round one, out-landing Matias 28 to 11. Matias adjusted in round two, closing the distance and smothering Ponce to dull some of his attack while also finding spots for his own short power punches.
"I thought it was an even fight, but one punch can change everything and that’s what happened,” said Ponce. “Subriel is a tough, strong fighter and I knew what he was capable of.”
After landing a powerful left hand that hurt Ponce late in round four, Matias returned determined and sharp in round five, landing 47% of his power punches over the three minutes. In the waning moments of the round, Matias landed the decisive blows, a series of head and body shots that badly hurt Matias and put him on the mat.
Ponce was able to make it to his stool, but his corner had seen enough and suggested that the fight be stopped, with the official result coming as a TKO at the end of round four.
“I’m fine now,” said Ponce. “My team knows me, and they made the decision that they had to make. It hurts, but the most important thing is that I’m healthy.”
“I wasn’t really surprised,” said Matias. “Once I saw how his corner reacted. I saw that (Ponce) was hurt in that fifth round. I thought that I was tentative in the first four rounds, so I came out with a different approach and mindset in the fifth.”
After the fight, with his IBF belt in tow, Matias set his sights on a unification showdown against WBC 140-pound World Champion Regis Prograis.
“Regis Prograis, I’m coming for you,” said Matias. “I’m the world champion now. I promise that I’m coming to hurt you. Prograis likes to talk the talk, but I have that same mentality. Let’s see who prevails. I want him to see that there are people crazier than him in this sport.”

Soy puertorriqueño y no hay nada de malo que tenga sangre dominicana, sigue siendo igual de puertorriqueño que tú y yo. Subriel is an absolute machine. This man just has a way of making opponents quit. It’s ridiculous how good he is at 140 pounds. The thing that makes him different from other boxers is his combinations. They come from all different angles and he also able to keep a fast pace once he figures out his opponent. I think I get what Mattais does. He usually gives up some rounds to try and study his opponent and she what there style is. Then, when he figures out ur style that’s when he attacks. He is an absolute monster, and it’s ridiculous how good he is. He really is the boogeyman at 140. I could see him give Devin Haney problems if they fight eachother
Matias has a crazy chin. Ponce was all over him early but you could just tell when matias landed it was more impactful. Great fight!

Ive been wondering, since others perceived Matias as a "nothing" in the division, an easy to beat, one dimensional, an easy to outbox type of fighter , simply put a free belt for everybody, a perfect treat for the elites, right? Matias he is a very intelligent and dangerous beast, he analyzes all his fights when he receives blows to the jaw, he assimilates it in an incredible way and creates the sensation to the opponent that he is hurting Matias, and in reality they waste time exhausting his energy since Matias What he wants is that, stand up straight and hit us hard to the limit, whoever received the most, these boxers of today with many titles only run, and that It's boring in the Boxing event, I think we will see Matias putting all the 140 pound champions running, it's time for boxing to have real fun, Matias is very good and I pay for any pay per view event just to see him box. What a firefight while it lasted! If I had to imagine, Ponce was having negative thoughts in his head after knowing what happened to Matias other opponent who let the beating continue longer than it should have. He knew it would only get worse and it wasn't worth his career or life.

The commentators from the door wanted Ponce to win. They were counting punches that just landed on Matias gloves. WELP like 90% of the time. They are wrong.
I Am Part Argentine 🇦🇷 and Part French 🇫🇷 so i would have liked Jeremias Ponce to win, i have followed his career for a couple of years where he fought but also in Europe as it is often the case with Argentine Boxers ( Carlos Monzon, Victor Emilio Galindez, more recently Sergio Martinez, Marcos Maidana and Brian Castaño 🇦🇷 ) .. Argentines are Road Boxers at heart, but the best Man won ! It is a shame some people criticized Ponce though .. he gave it all he could : his jab is very good, he has a high guard, hus rythm is non chalant but he can be explosive .. he does have some fast hands as well and his combinations are compacts, works nicely at two ranges .. Matias was the better Man, he is the best Boxer Ponce fought, one loss is not the end of his career ; last century Boxers would get beaten up for 15 rounds, multiple times a month/year ! 😅 Great War nontheless 🇦🇷🇵🇷🔥🥊

Bill Haney was on FightHubTV and was asked about Subriel Matias, he responded with a made up story about Peter Khan(who isn't Matias manager) and 4 million(Matias never spoke to Bill at the time of the FightHubTV interview, if he wasn't scared, why would he make up a fake story? 2. Matias team come out with a public statement that Bill was lying, Peter Khan isnt his manager, Matias team is represented by Juan Orengo and Pedro Cruz. 3. Bill lying about Matias went public. It's a viral topic on ThaBoxingVoice. Bill goes on the TBV with weird dishonest energy. Matias trainer who use to train Haney and known Bill over 10 years are talking, but Matias trainer Panda Najar is nice to Bill where as Bill is looking to argue because he has nothing to say about the fake story he made up about Peter Khan/4 million. He deflects the fake story and changes topics. 4. Bill Haney was given Matias manager number. Not only this confirms Bill was lying (if he was confused he wouldn't have made up a whole story of FightHubTV and just admit he doesn't have the number to Matias team) 5. Haney's gigantic weight bully female dog ass literally hasn't ever beaten anyone remotely close to his size and not only that but half the names he's fought were either shot old men or well past prime old men who he was way way bigger than Loma - a well past prime old 35 y/o blown up 126 pounder who was 20lbs lighter, had a near six inch shorter reach, and Haney still needed a gift from his three home judges, a 36 hour weigh in which was absolutely scandalous for a fight between the biggest weight bully in the sport/biggest 135 pounder ever vs the smallest 135 pounder in the sport, to get by him in his own backyard. And even worse, Haney ducked the rematch even though only 17% of the 118k who voted in FightHub's insanely large poll had him winning and he would've had home advantage and three home judges again against an old well past prime fighter he had an absolutely obscene 20lb weight advantage over Gamboa - inactive blown up 130 pounder who was 39 y/o and shot to hell who Haney was way heavier than with a six inch reach advantage. Gamboa's record at 135 is garbage. He should be like 7-6 with 2 KOs. Diaz hurt Haney and Haney couldn't hurt him. Kambosos - this is the first career 135 pounder world champ Haney has fought and he was still way bigger than him. Kambosos is a one-hit wonder who won his previous 3 fights via SD or MD and he cannot deal with boxers his own size to save his life, let alone ones way bigger than him. Won a SD against a washed old inactive Mickey Bey who had only fought once in 3.5 years, against a nobody. Now here's the interesting part. Bey was Haney's assistant trainer so not only did Haney have insider info on Kambosos but he knew that if Kambosos went life and and death against an old well past prime washed version of his assistant trainer then he would stood no chance against a much bigger young version of him which of course is whole reason why he was willing to fight Kambosos in his backyard albeit he still wouldn't have done so had the judges not been from neutral countries. What nationality were they all for his fight against Loma again? You already know. Rougarou - to be fair to Haney at least Rougarou was a career 140 and he would be or at least many, not me of course, believed Haney would finally be facing someone his own size for the first time in his career. Wrong! Even though Rougarou was a career 140 pounder, a big 140 who really struggled to make 140, and it was Haney's 140lb debut, Haney was much bigger and weighed 9lbs more than him in the ring :facepalm: Haney rehydrated 25lbs after the weigh in And even worse, Haney ducked the rematch against Loma to face someone, who like Kambosos cannot deal with boxers to save his life and was a perfect stylistic fit for him, who cannot close the distance to save his life, and who arguably lost his previous fight to a rangy boxer mover dollar store version of Haney. Rougarou looked absolute terrible in that fight, utterly clueless on how to close the distance, and he got dropped too. Haney was way way, way or much bigger than every single one of them, had a huge reach advantage over most of them and a significant one over the rest and he's only fought two punchers, one of whom was old completely washed and inactive, the other a perfect stylistic fit for him who cannot close the distance to land with his shots against him, and both of whom Haney was way bigger and heavier than Wake me up when Haney finally fights someone his size and no that won't be happening next because Ryan weighed 148 for his 140 debut and Haney weighed 165 which is 17 pounds heavier and just 5lbs less than career 160 GGG's average fight night weight and just 2lbs and 3lbs less than what GGG weighed against Proksa and Rosado That 17lb weight difference between them is the same as it is between LHW Bivol and Haney. Let that sink in. Haney has the weakest resume in boxing. His first 19 opponents were 114-149. Haney can't knockout guys smaller than him so what makes you think he stops guys bigger than him? I love Matias’ inside craft. He’ll tap a couple punches, mixing up the speed/power, then let go of some solid shots. It’s beautiful to watch. A lot of fighters forget to vary their punches, not everything should be 100%

Matias, who for the most part is an arm puncher, draws strength from his back and shoulders. He has a bodybuilders back, (check out 27.01), allowing him to square up to his opponent, punch furiously with short chopping rights and left hooks, while expending little energy because his legs are employed only to march forward in his search and destroy mission to batter his opponent into submission.

I grew up on Trinidad & Cotto, so your gonna have to show me ALOT more before I even consider putting you in that category. He also leaves himself open for a lot counters when he's putting on that immense pressure which is how he got dropped against Petros Ananyan.
