Mathew Jonson Presents His Synthesizer Favourites: Roland SH-101 (Part 1of 2)

Музыка

Mathew Jonson is one of techno’s most distinct artists and live performers, and a pro when it comes to synthesizers, and here explores the Roland SH-101 as part of a brand new series on Telekom Electronic Beats TV. One of the most iconic synthesizers ever, Jonson’s experience with this Roland classic dates back to the mid-‘90s, and he discusses the basics in part one of our exploration of what makes the SH-101 so great.

I know this demo is years old, but it’s STILL the best presentation of the 101. Thank you for providing a *variety* of sounds, rich with character. That’s the #1 thing every other demo gets wrong...most presenters use the saw only, open the cutoff ALL the way, close the resonance ALL the way and leave the release on for too long, resulting in an annoying buzzy patch that grates on one’s eardrums. The 101 is capable of so much more and you expertly & naturally captured that range here ❤

ABSOLUTELY! I love & enjoy everything Mathew does. Every video I've watched with him in it, I learn something and he comes across completely genuine plus very intelligent in his musical creation techniques & styles. The greatest part of this specific video, is I just bought myself the Behringer MS-1 for Christmas at a $110 discount from normal price, and you better believe I'll be trying out all these tricks on that immediately!

What I really like about this video is it's authenticity. Not just another fake 'I like this synth because' video. You can tell by how he moves his hand over controlls that he really uses this synth a lot.

@@theeltea Ehm. I don't know you and you - obviously - don't know fonitronik. HE knows synthesizers. In a way you - for sure - do not. And - imho - I know a little of synthesizers in general too and it IS a special video. It is a difference to know a synthesizer and how to play'em in an artistical/musical manner. And that's what Mathew is showing us here. just my 2 cent.

The two coolest things about the SH101 IMO are (i) every bit of it is great: great sounding VCO, great sub, great sounding VCF, really good curves on the envelope, superb interface; and (ii) the simplicity of it - one osc, one env - means you can really play it. This video shows off these features brilliantly. As for the secret about using the trigger input for accents...that is seriously inventive. I've owned this synth for about 10 years and it never occurred to me to try that.

This video really shows off the greatness of the 101, and really the greatness of all great synths. It is not just the raw sound of the oscillator, or the filter, or whatever... it has always been how the entire package comes together as a whole. The 101 is an inspiring instrument. It has exactly the right amount of stuff, in the right places, sounding the right way, to be rad. Very few other synths pull that off. 80s Roland were on another level.

He is simply the best at live Techno,, and getting a room going in my experience. I heard him live first in 2006, Raw Fusion, Miami WMC's. Good lord (there are videos somewhere), that was comparable to the Sex pistols first show (if you ask me).. Then at HPC in Tampa in 2011 or 2012, more of a DJ set, but he might have had a synth too (I was a bit out of my tent). He is so good, positive, and has always been super nice to me and the surrounding fans. And now, he is apparently a fantastic teacher.
