Mathew Jonson Presents His Synthesizer Favourites: Roland SH-5 (Electronic Beats TV)
Музыка
In this episode of Mathew Jonson’s Synthesizer Favourites for Telekom Electronic Beats TV, the renowned synth lover presents the Roland SH-5, explaining in vivid detail why he’s so fond of this classic monophonic machine. Manufactured from 1976 to 1981, the SH-5’s flexibility makes it a perfect tool for electronic music. Now an extremely rare find (with prices to match), the SH-5 is considered one of the best analogue synthesizers ever built by astute gear heads.

Always enjoy Mathew's demos. Just very natural and informative. Don't own an SH-5 but have recorded with one and it was a lot of fun.

... actually by coincidence got to borrow an SH-5 a few days after this comment. Tried out Matt's LFO 2 trigger trick. :)
Mathew Jonson always comes up with the best sequences when demoing synths

Hell yeah, I keep coming back to this demo to listen to that sweet sequence morphing through all those amazing sound variations. I want a whole song based on this sequence!

I guess it's kind of off topic but do anyone know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?

This. So many channels, if they program anything they just program in like, a major scale or something. Which is so unhelpful.
im lucky enough to have one of these
This is definitely one of the better quality introductions of the SH-05, very informative and with very good sound examples, good work.
That square at 2.44 and PWM, gowd it’s like a punch and caress in your face at the same time 🥹
I could watch him all day!
One of my favourite synths xxx
Man this synth really wows me. That sound is absolutely impeccable.
The early Roland’s are killer percussion sequence machines: Random S&H LFO noise source with their ultra tight and fast envelopes....f’ing heaven.
this sequence is so enjoyable to listen to for the duration of the video. thanks mat!
Lovely to see & hear you work the SH5 to bring out its best, Mathew! I had 3 of these back when they were around ('77 to 82-ish): two were linked together to make a single monster and they were really something. The only thing that I was disappointed in was the oscillators: they were rather invertebrate, particularly at the bass end. The minimoog proved it. But the pulse width, ring mod and all the switchable combinations of the SH5 were incomparable. Thank you for showing it off!
Very great sound
Wonderful! Bleeptastic absurdity and beautiful tones.
Another great vid! Love this series!
Wow, this thing sounds amazing, great demo!!
Great content and video production! ❤️
Definitely my favorite reviewer on youtube! #Legend
That ringing square sound from the SH era is something else entirely. Can't really be done with other synths.
This synth sounds insanely phatt!
I sincerely love all your content but so far those series are my favourites

Nice friend
Sounds really really nice. Even to my limited hearing capabilities
my fave sh
Checking this video out to further convince me to buy Behringer's future version of the SH-5. Sounds very good to me.
Definitely has that sound, can't say I'm a fan, for some reason never liked Roland mono synths from the 1970's but loved the juno 6 and their other 1980's polys though.

they are so good bro...the system is a lot fatter like huge walls of sound, the SH5 is a bit more of a strange more bizzare array of sounds, I play my buddies system so understand the diffs as I have an SH5
Synthetic machines does great demo.
Can we have a review/demo of the NL2X? :)
The MS-5 mine!
Yoda of the synthesizers 🌌
The triggered accent effect is dope
I use SH-100 (VST version) and it is monster.
Thank you Behringer
Is it possible to use the portamento function, when triggering externally? :)
Eat Static used to have an SH-5 called "the alien" and now I see why!
What about the ports on the back? Wasn't there one labelled "computer"?
What are you sequencing it with?
What an excellent synth run-through video! Nice sequences too. The coat is inside out, it´s super distracting.
Is the sound at 15:12 just 2 detuned squarewaves?
Bass station 2 is so underrated
Aaaand... this is a good way to take a brilliant Roland SH5 bassline --> soundcloud.com/ethan-poe/mathew-jonson-synth-favs-roland-sh5. Free download!
has Mr. Jhonson got Marionette from this Synth?

Synth is great but sequences are the thing here.
Why am I not excited hearing these things?

this is a good question. probably lots of us are real cork-sniffing synth addicts, coming here with a love of related synths like system 100m. for us, this is like riding as passenger in a car on a race track with a race car driver next to us.
Surprise! No Boutique ;)
At that rate, a keyboard is just for show.
What’s is he using to sequence the synth??

Y 6db high pass and 24 low pass plus a bandpass
15:39 that sounds a lot like a 303 !
Now compare this to the shit Roland makes these days...
Alot of cats 40+ yrs ago with one of these + Revox RTR made serious coin for movie effects, etc. Now it's just a rich kid's noise etcha sketch.
Always a big show with high price instruments . if you are good you make music with a playtoy casio . all the rest is snobish

Sure, you could snarkily dismiss it out of hand...or you could pay attention to this thorough exploration of a synth with a unique architecture and learn sound design techniques you could creatively apply to more affordable instruments.
