I also think to get a drivers license you need just like a trucker to know and also do a pre and post trip inspection every time you get behind the wheel before any negative comments I know some truckers who don't but should

This needs to be the top comment. I have a CDL but it’s only for test drives which I don’t do to often, but the few times I do, it amazes me how many people think these trucks can stop on a dime. I got one on the way and I’m gonna rent them a big ol’ box truck so they understand a little about what driving a truck is like.

I am just a bricklayer but I have been fixing my own cars since I was 17. Each year I get better at it and collect more tools. I probable have about three or four thousand dollars worth of tools but I haven't had to pay a mechanic to fix my cars in the last 25 years.

I am a Surgical tech student and the debt is mounting. But Because my father taught me how to fix my vehicles when I was in high school. I make side money helping fellow classmates outs fix their cars and If I don’t know I’ll tell them but I always go looking for the answer and do it on my own vehicle first before I do it on someone else’s. And it’s helping pay for something as simple as paper all the way up to a textbook or two depending on what needs to be done

I am retired now, but my favorite Highschool was one that taught many trades along with standard core curriculum. They had a machine shop, welding shop, automotive shop, drafting shop, wood shop, in which they built walls, sheds, and small garages. Also an electronic shop which was required before taking a computer assembly class. Those kids had diverse skills, and job offers after graduating, while the others tried College, which many flunked out, and accumulated debt. Many of those kids in trade based classes went to work directly in Alaska .

Michael is a great guy, you can tell by the way he carries himself and his truck two key pick ups are the tool box and being so close to the edge it’s not worth it any other dealer wouldn’t care and second the high school kids part selling them quality affordable items. Best of luck to you MATCO Michael.

I’m all for helping younger people understand the value of tools. Doesn’t matter what brand like you said “Lifetime warranty is a lifetime warranty.” People straight out of high school shouldn’t be on a tool truck if they can’t afford the tools. Go to Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight etc and get your starter tools and upgrade as you learn what you need and don’t need. 🤟

All find and dandy when we’re talking older cars, it’s gonna be scary in the future when the manufacturers make it impossible for the consumers to do any type of maintenance at home. It’s already begun and it’s only going to get worse - the only people that will be able to work on the vehicles of the future will have to be educated in the way they allow. There will always be the “oldies” but for how long?

Talking about the tech school stuff they definitely stuff snap on on us. sadly the sets that they have with the toolboxes suck. its all chrome sockets with not even the flex head or comfort grip ratchets its the base stuff just a f80. and also they don't even tell you that you can also sign up for the student programs for Mac or Matco which i have found to have better discounts than snap on. Students starting really just need to do what I did I have a husky toolbox and have slowly filled it up with mostly cheaper stuff before i came to school but with the discounts I have added some snap on and matco what i have found is most of the time with Matco is that I can get it for cheaper through them with my discounts than to buy the non branded version on amazon. but sadly it works a new lube tech at my work just started this week and already bought atleast 4k worth of snap on and the only things in my opinion that were worth in the set is the toolbox and he got a 1/2 angle torque wrench but its not like he needs the digital torque wrench either he is going to be doing oil changes and tire rotations.

Their boxes are very good. Their paint jobs are very well done. But very similar to Icon boxes at least to the 2S. Any box can be painted to your liking with a proper spray kit even when buying the paint and spray tools and still saving 1000's compared to Matco boxes or Snap-on. The lifetime guarantee is what makes their price worth it though. Icon is the only budget box I know that has a lifetime warranty (but it comes with strict NO MOD guidelines like Snap-on's contract)

I agree technical schools in high schools need to be brought back and they need to quit pushing these colleges because the price of it has gotten so outrageous that it’s taking people 15-20 years to pay these things off and they are not making much to start with which is why I say that trade schools need to come back and kids need training in things to start with. I did and loved it

You think about a house a plumber does the pipes, an electrician does the electrical, a hvac guy does the hvac, carpenter does the rough etc etc... Comes to a car a mechanic does everything with maybe the exception of body work. If it wasn't for the "romance" or cool factor of cars, there wouldn't be any mechanics. Not for what we are paid, and not for what you have to buy.

My experience with learning automotive started at 6 or 7 yo. Dad was a mechanic and welder by trade. Of course in the beginning it was holding the light, handing him tools and cleaning up. By 10 yo I had learned a good bit and was given my first full tune up on a 67 Barracuda with a 273ci Plugs, check. Wires, check. Cap and rotor, check. Points, check. Unfortunately when doing the condenser the new one had a copper strip instead of a wire. I had no idea that if that strip grounds out on the shaft it will destroy the condenser and smoke. Needless to say the ass whipping that followed was one of his best. The screaming and accusing me of destroying the entire electrical system. Brother when I say ass whipping I promise you there was blood, bruising and should have been stitches. But I can promise you I never made that mistake again.

So I am 35 I have worked on cars all my life doing my own repairs and self taught I have always want to work on cars for a living but right now I work construction and I am considering going to a vocational school to get some schooling and getting a job in the field I have the basic tools I just don't have the knowledge to diagnose stuff once I know the problem I can do the work it's figuring out the problem I struggle with at times what is everyone's opinion should I go to school or should I just try to get in a shop and learn on the job I learn better hands on and don't want to pay to sit in a class and I am looking at wyotech cause it's close to me in montana or my local community College if it offers that opinions would be nice I just don't know if 35 is to late but I know I can't work in the trenches for ever and need to find a job I can work for many years

Its funny. Because for new techs that haven't really put their trade to use, they don't know the ins and outs of tool quality with the huge range of brands. Matco has great tools mainly their air tools and their premium 20v tools but most of their other stuff is rebranded budget tools at an extreme markup. I feel confident to say 70% of Matco hand tools are rebranded budget tools. My biggest mistake was buying their long ratchet wrench set from 8mm to 24mm. for $550 when I could have spent half that on ICON ratchet wrench set also made in Taiwan but they are a bit longer and the ratchet end has a tighter seal able to take much more abuse. My Matco wrenches I use for suspension work everyday are wearing out fast and have to been returned after 5 months use which is unacceptable. Another bunch is their oxy sensor kit (don't buy) It's gearwrench rebrand at double price. Their multi color trim/clip tool set (buy Cal-Van instead). Their magnetic sparkplug set (buy gearwrench instead) both same exact sets at half the price. All their lights are rebrands of Streamlight and Astro. All of them. All their ratchets suck, being the most used tool in the bunch Snap-on or at least Icon is the way to go for them. I can only recommend their Air tools which are tried and true some of the best. Also their 1/2" cordless impact at 8.5lbs very good with an amazing battery. Their 20v drill is very good also which I have been using for 2 years drilling out iron and aluminum rivets with their legendary Hyper step bit set which is $440 and wear out very slowly with constant use couple that investment with a Drill Doctor (From Amazon $170) and the bits stay tip top for life. I could go on.
