    Beautiful, beautiful job. I've watched all your bedding videos and I'm a huge fan. You are the Bob Ross of rifle bedding and I mean that as the most sincere compliment. I tried one awhile back on my Savage 308 in a Boyds tacticool (wood laminate) stock and swore I'd never do it again because it was such a pain and then I ended up cracking the stock, probably due to overtightening the action screws without any pillars. You've given me the confidence to try again. I think I'll start with my .22lr this time. Thanks man you guys rock.

    Bought a couple of containers of Nathans Match grade bedding compound, followed his instructions as per his videos to the letter of the law and proceeded to bed 2 rifles. The bedding compound is really easy to work with being quite viscous and easy to mix. Got 2 beautiful bedding jobs completed. Have bedded a number of rifles over my 70 years but Nathans mix has given me by far the most professional bedding job. Really pleased with the result, especially the Hogue rubberised stock which are not always the easiest stock to bed effectively. Go for it fellas. The process is time consuming but worth it in the finish.This stuff is worth it's weight in gold, and kiwi made !!

    Nathan, wasn't the whole idea of having both the Front and Rear Pillars present (I assume, from the McMillan Factory?), to give you both Front and Rear ............... Referrence Points? By removing material off the top of both these Pillars, you have taken this epoxy bedding job, from a Pillar Bedded-Epoxy Bedding job, back to a conventional epoxy bedding job. This is Not the way I do a bedding job, as I believe you have taken a backward step. I would be interested to hear your reason behind, why you have done this? Regards JB

    Having watched several bedding videos, I often wondered how you know where the action will datum off of with respect to where it was from the factory. No one ever mentioned in their videos, maybe they did something along the barrel channel but kept that secret out. Nice job. Keep up the good work.

    I always thought the point of pillar bedding was to have contact between the action and the pillar. That being said, I am slightly confused as to why the tops of the pillars were ground away. Can you explain why one is better than the other? Thanks

    Hi Jordan, we do not utilize clay in the kits and instead use a very high quality plasticine. This is very easy to remove after bedding as you will find if you purchase this product. All the best.

    I'm a novice preparing to bed a long-range hunting rifle, and I was wondering why you opted for a full bed versus just bedding the tang area and the recoil lug area. The partial bedding method certainly seems easier--but maybe not worth it for performance's sake?

    is it possible to re-bed a stock that was already bedded? Im sure you can grind it down but what concerns me is the recoil lug area...is it possible to grind enough out to re-bed? I have a FN SPR that has a pretty shoddy bedding job Id like to redo if possible. By the way we need you to upload more long range shooting and autopsy/bullet performance vids!

    Awesome stuff Nathan well done. I do have a quick question, when re bedding a rifle due to a new barrel, do you simply grind out the old bedding compound and go from there or is there anything else I would need to be a aware of?

  • @Ballisticstudies

    @Ballisticstudies

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, I tend to simply remove the barrel channel bedding and see how it shoots. Often a barrel will shoot just fine fully free floated. But if there is any funny business including recoil lug misalignment, then I fully rebed. I have covered all of this in my third book- The Practical Guide To Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing And Maintenance. This goes through the processes step by step and you don't need to be a smith to work through it. Hope that helps.

  • @elkhuntr2816

    Do you tape the recoil lug to provide a little tolerance on the front and sides?

  • @Ballisticstudies

    @Ballisticstudies

    Hi Elkhuntr, yes, that is correct. The reasoning for this is explained carefully in my books (Practical Guide to Long Range Rifles - 2nd edition / Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance). All the best.

    Yo Nathan, I am in a forum that is debating on grinding down the pillars. Can you elaborate why is ok?

  • @Ballisticstudies

    @Ballisticstudies

    10 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, if you have a close look at the rifle in the first videos, the pillars are already countersunk so there is no debate in this regard, HS made the call when they designed the stock this way. My next book explains the various methods of pillar bedding in great detail as a part of the accurizing process.

  • @Ballisticstudies

    @Ballisticstudies

    10 жыл бұрын

    Nathan Foster In this last video, we ground the pillar so that it would have a good measure of compound between the pillar and action. If we did not do this, the compound seepage between the pillar and action would result in a very weak layer, about 10 thou / .2mm thick. This brittle layer tends to flake away. We have been researching this for a very long time, hence why I found it better to put all of the information into book form so that readers can study and fully understand the theory and and actual consequences of each method.

  • @quickclot1

    @quickclot1

    Nathan Foster I talked to Justin at McMillan yesterday for awhile about what he would recommend for the bedding process. He said that a regular skim bed using Marine Tex or Devcon would have sufficient thickness for wear and tear. I told them that you have been doing ballistic research for like 20 years and that you said about 2mm needs to be removed to give the epoxy enough thickness to no be to brittle or flake off. Justin said that he had been bedding for a very long time using Marine Tex, which wouldn't flake off or crack. I know you have great respect for McMillan, but do you disagree with them here?

    Like the last tip! lol Just wondering though...a lot of speculation from guys about bedding the shank of the barrel. I've been told be gunsmiths that the barrel will heat and expand ever so slightly which in turn binds the action/barrel to some degree. It makes sense to me, but I have seen some of the best gun smiths in the country bed the shank. What is the determining factor of whether to bed the shank or not? Appreciate your time.
