There is something that Marcello had that few other film actors had. Jean Paul Belmondo, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen come to mind. The ability to be completely believable as an everyday ordinary man and yet be a sex symbol at the same time. Actors nowadays seem to be more about their looks. Marcello brought a depth and natural earthiness to his films that is extremely appealing.

Beautiful! what a great selection of his finest moments. When I watch Fellini with Guiletta and Marcello, I am taken away to someplace far away and back in time. These moments are treasured forever. My favorite is final scene in La Dolce Vita.

a lot of greeks think mastroianni is a greek name and i really dont know why: the origin of the name is "magister iohannes" that in latin means: master john, in italian maestro giovanni (as you should know latin had been one of the official language in italy until his unification in 1861). it's a very popular name in southern italy, probably is born during the italian reinassance. maybe he was of greek origin (there's nothing that proves this), but we are talking about centuries ago.

Mattia Santangelo I don't know if Marcelo was of Greek origin or not but his name is very popular also in Greece. In general in Greece we used to form the surname of someone by combining his profession and his name. "Mastro" in Greek means craftsman and "Ioannis" (pretty common greek name) is the name of "John" in Greek . Taking into account that Greeks are related to Italians and especially to the ones of the south (as part of the Byzantine empire) im pretty sure that the name Mastroioanni is of Greek origins.
