What gave Bob away was the way he wrote the date, how he sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," and his Wehrmacht-issued IMCO lighter.

Yep. They already had him identified as a German spy, but they specifically asked “Bob” for a light. An American would have had a Zippo lighter. The IMCO lighter was the final verification and sealed his fate.

Glenn Dye's co-pilot, John "Lucky" Luckadoo, who is fortunately still with us at age 101 has a few less than flattering things to say about Dye and the some of the other members of his crew. Prior to leaving for England the 100th's co-pilots had accrued more flying time than many first pilots so they were transferred to other groups and a new batch of co-pilots was brought in including Lucky who was assigned to Dye's crew. Because of the attachment they had with their old co-pilot, the navigator and bombardier made Lucky's life hell and Dye didn't do anything to stop them. During a training flight Dye landed their B-17 in a muddy grass field in Ohio to visit his wife and baby. The B-17 got stuck in the mud and they tried to tow it out with tractors, trucks and wreckers in order to pull it onto wooden planks. On full power the B-17 was finally able to get off the boards and they barely cleared the trees at the end of the field when they took off. In Newfoundland on their way to England Dye hooked up with a British woman in the WAAF "Women's Auxiliary Air Force" and got the clap as a result. While the rest of the 100th went on to England Lucky and the rest of Dye's crew had to wait two weeks while Dye received sulfa treatment. When he was finally released from the hospital he was so weak he had to be carried into the cockpit leaving Lucky to fly the plane and the crew to England by himself. Before they left Lucky had it out with his navigator and warned if he warned if he didn't navigate them to landfall on the nose he'd kick his ass out of the plane without a parachute. They got to England no problem. Lucky felt Dye should've been court-martialed for the landing stunt in Ohio and his relationship with the navigator and bombardier was strained to say the least.

The were a few give aways of the infiltrator. Firstly how he wrote the date rest of the world way not american way. Now military did sometimes write it that way as well but he also wrote his 1's and 9's the german way. Secondly the anthem he messed up some of the lyrics , he also sang all of it which not everyone would know like quinn they ended up humming, thirdly the way he sang it was like the german way he had been taught loud and proud. We didnt get some of his answers to other questions but its possible he answered the london one as it was part of their infiltration research to learn about large places And the final confirmation for the resistance was the guys lighter. It was an austrian made lighter/brand when nigh on every american would have had a zippo

On the other hand... There are shots of Buck in the intro's and trailers that have not happened yet. Hand to hand combat in a snowy forest, and him bloody and cold walking in a crowd of people. And Crosby made it too. Even though he was mentioned as not returning in this episode, when his buddy Bubbles asked about him. In the episode 5 blurp on appletv they mention that he is getting promoted. So he somehow finds his way back in episode 5 as well.

Wrote this in other reactors and have been adding to it along the way but there were a lot of subtle clues that the person was not an American. 1) When they zoomed in him writing the date he put down day/month/year which is normal to everybody except Americans who put down month/day/year. 2)Hard to describe this one, but most Americans write their 9's with a circle and straight line where many Germans will have the circle but will curve the straight line. A German 9 will look almost like a lowercase g. Hard to describe but very noticeable if you see it in person. A German 1 is also a little different like you would see in the close up. Americans will usually just have a straight line for 1 or some Americans will have a small angled part coming from the top left part of the number 1 but a German will usually make the small angled part a lot bigger or add a slight curve to it. Almost to the point it almost looks like an upside down letter v. 3) It was common to get them to sing the national anthem since most Americans can't sing the whole thing without messing up or start humming the rest whereas a lot of German spies learned the whole thing and this guy was singing it loudly almost trying to prove he knew it. When he sang the whole thing it would look weird since most Americans can't. Also, the Star Spangled Banner has word usages that are not how normal people speak but more of a poetic form. When the German spy was singing, he says "Just how proudly we hail" when the actual lyrics are "What so proudly we hailed". We might be able to sing the whole thing but when you say the lyrics wrong we'd notice something was wrong. 4) Another common question was to ask a baseball question like who won the pennant last year or who played for who. 5) Asking questions about locations was common as well. The Germans knew they flew in from England but not exactly where in England so they would study major key locations to prepare to spy in case they were questioned they could answer. Like one of the guys pointed out, he never had a chance to see London because you would have to have a 2 day pass to get there and back but he never had a chance which was common. The spy likely didn't know that so answered the Horatio Nelson for what is the statue in Trafalgar Square. Likely even described what London was like from what he had researched. 6) The lighter is an Austrian Imco lighter where most Americans would have a Zippo lighter. It was never a situation where you messed up once and they thought you were a spy, it was a combination of mistakes that would convince them

I feel it was the singing that gave him away. The other two are scared shiteless and muttering the anthem while the German was belting it out like he was at a concert. What if there was a German officer in the bar that overheard it? You'd have given away it all.

Names, military specialties (jobs), missions, could all be verified by the resistance. Although, as a former soldier myself, if the resistance asked me for my mission I would not have told them. Singing the national anthem may give away an accent even if the words are correct. Baseball questions were standard as the sport was not even followed in Europe. Dates? We in the US tend to write our dates in a different format than Europeans do. We do month, day, year so it would look like : February 11, 2024 ; or 02/11/24 if you use just numbers. Deviations, especially slight deviations in several of these areas would help filter German infiltrators. Especially black hearted Romanian girls who speak English and live in Germany :D

@@waynehatchell6343 As a former soldier I can tell you not everyone spends much time in the military writing dates, especially when you perform a combat function. Next, the only time, even as a Sergeant E-5 , that I wrote a date was on military paperwork and the only reason I would write it any other way than as a US civilian is because it was a standardized form which required it, not because I purposely was militarily indoctrinated to do so. Unless you push paper as your speciality you aren't going to be changing the way you date things. Those habits are hard to break. In fact, most of the time you will be writing dates tend to be when writing letters home, in which you would use the same method as you would as a civilian. Resistance organizations are going to be looking for specific habits that will uniquely identify people and when you write your dates one way for atleast 17 - 18 years of life when asked to write down the date you are likely to follow that habit. Finally, as I said ( Deviations, especially slight deviations in several of these areas) , these test were designed to gauge a body of responses to find deviations. Not focused on one specific because intel orgs such as the German Intelligence services could train people for a single specific task. These tests were not foolproof, but it's what they had. Sometimes Allied Intel screwed things up and got a lot of the resistance killed, especially radio operators.

Obviously it is the standard now but I wonder if it only became that way during and after WW2 especially after joining NATO. Coming back to do a war bond drive. Around 8k US airmen become prisoners of war, so I wouldn't worry about all of them not returning. They survived war but as prisoners in good conditions. Germans had very bad espionage, small details gave them away, because those spies in most cases never been abroad or only for short time to learn certain habits helpful in their tasks. There was case that German spies came to London and were waiting for train on station that was closed and everyone knew that but these guys. Also similar but reversed situation with small detail was in Tarantino movie "Inglorious bastards" where guy played by Michael Fassbender ordered 3 drinks in English way, pretending to be German officer.

Funnily enough, when you said imagine not knowing your own national anthem. It’s actually a bit of a red flag if you do know all the words…. most Americans don’t. We all know the tune but will almost certainly screw some portion of the words up or just straight up not know an entire verse. Also there were a few other things that gave Bob away. The way he wrote the number one with a little flag at the top ( Americans usually write it as just a straight line) there was some other things I’m sure other people will elaborate as well but the final kicker was pulling out a German imco lighter to light the guy’s cigarette Americans would have almost exclusively had zippos.
