Mastering The Fundamentals: Pot Odds

In this video, we discuss Pot Odds and why they matter. Poker math is fun!
Understanding pot odds is necessary to playing good, strong, fundamentally sound poker. Too many players base all of their decisions on whether they think they are ahead or behind, but learning how to compare pot odds & equity will open up your strategy so that you can fully realize your win rate!
Pot odds & equity are how poker professionals determine whether a play is profitable in the long run. Pot odds are calculated by dividing the amount of the call by the size of the pot AFTER you have called. So, if you're facing a $10 bet and the current pot size is $90, your pot odds would be 10:1, meaning you only need to beat 10% of the hands your opponent would bet!

@xLTxHardcore rather than just betting according to pot and stack size, this added a dynamic to different bet sizing in all positions. While this is mentioned in every video, the content within this pot-odds video seemed to bring all that together. Now I'm not talking ONLY pot-odds, I'm talking about all of the content within this. .... not sure if im clear or not. It just really helped me to view the game more dynamically. It's also helped me view my opponents and what they may be playing.... easier for range placements. I hope I answered your question.

@@markcapestro5390Very well explained. My math isn't strong and I get nervous in game when I'm trying to use a new skill (information). It's hard for me to use the basics of odds, let alone the dynamics of exploitation. How do you practice or study these theoretical concepts before you get to the game?

Thanks as always Jonathan. I have a different question but do you know what happened to Kevin Phwaap? I recall he suffered a stroke then returned to the game in 2016/2017 but them disappeared again. I believe you two were acquaintances possibly even house mates. Just wanted to check on his well being.

I played 4 tournaments online a few months ago, I played once a week on the weekends. A mutual friend invited me to his home games, this is the only reason I started to play. I'm not new to poker, me and my friends would play almost every weekend when I was younger. I won the tournament twice, got to the final table and came in top 20 in the 4 i played. I only earned around 2k, it's not like I could quit my job. So I started studying GTO thinking I could make this a good side hussle for now and I've watched almost all of your videos. I feel like it's made me worse. I haven't made top 50% since I started using GTO. Is there a point in playing this way if the people I play against don't use it?

  • @xLTxHardcore

Your baseline is GTO. You're supposed to adapt GTO to your opponents tendencies that stray from GTO. This is the spirit of exploitation. For example, you're being exploited in tournaments by players who play wider than GTO while you're likely trying to stay tight. Which means you're over folding against "weaker" opponents. The point of learning GTO is to learn WHY your play was successful before and not just an accident of the gut.

@@xLTxHardcore GTO said if HJ raises, Cutoff 3 bets, The button 4 bets, if you don't have certain cards, you fold. People online, just don't fold crap. Ax or Kx calls everytime. Offsuit, suited, it doesn't matter. I don't hit the flop when I get called, I C-bet and get reraised all in most of the time. It's just dumb. No more GTO for me.

Preflop is straightforward, it's judging the value of marginal hands at the river I find hard. Callking off my 7 against many of my opponents is often -100% ev if they bet into the river. Tbh, I play much better against good players than vs 'randos' who play by feel.
