Nice podcast. I learned a lot. Some words and expressions are new for me. I love British accent. However American accent is a bit easier. I am Brazilian. I lived in London from 2000 to 2004. I got the FCE . Thanks for sharing your podcasts, giving us an opportunity to improve our English skills. I am 65. Today, the young generation has better conditions to learn English. Technology has developed so fast.

Fabulous discussion Anna. Thank you. I absolutely loved it! As a Pole, I get the feeling that we could learn a lot about this subject. Especially when it comes to 'Polish directness'. We don't like to 'waste time' beating about the bush. I think we're missing a lot here because it's such a valuable skill and a gate-opener in many life situations. ❤

That was a pretty interesting conversation. Thanks to both of you. Small talk looks like an art. The art of conversation was much appreciated and practiced at the end of the Eighteenth Century. I'm still trying to imagine an enlightened small-talk. What would it look like and sound like? 🙂

I had to stop at around 8:00 and post this comment about what I heard so far: even though I knew the subject from the title, you really do a terrific job at introducing a trivial, not-so-interesting topic in a very effective and enticing way. Brilliant!

@@quovadis9372 you're most likely right: my defining the topic 'trivial and not so interesting' was a little strong. Small talk is definitely interesting for anyone who wants to improve their conversation and social skills. And it's an important subject to someone who is into psicology or sociology, I guess. On the other hand, my personal feeling on that specific day when I watched the video was that I found the topic not particularly exiciting, for a bunch of reasons that I'm not going into here. It was actually just a personal and possibly momentary point of view. Last but not least: I used those adjectives to contrast the 'terrific job' she has done 'at introducing the topic in a very effective and enticing way'. By the tone of Anna's answer, I didn't do a bad job at conveying my thoughts and she seems to have fully appreciated my comment, don't you think?

I am Italian and also here is considered rude asking about money or personal stuff when you meet someone. Among friends, and I mean friends not people you just have a beer or a chit chat, you talk about cost of the house, or salary etc. It's easy here to talk about political staff at the bar (your coffee shop), maybe reading news on the paper and talk about it, but usually it's always among people who know each other. Usually we don't talk about religion. It's just something we are not used to talk about. I don't know why.
