Big buildings take a ton of time and resources. So get where your at, and yes I destroyed a bunch of my old large buildings. Just cant help myself to build large builds.
IIRC the technic hole + plate technique is illegal because the connection points are imperceptible misaligned, putting stress on the plates. But it's legal if you only have one connection point, e.g.if you used jumper plates

I searched up your reason because i as well couldn't remember and yes you are partially correct. Anything longer than a one by one is illegal for the reason you stated
How does this have so little views? The building is absolutely amazing and I really like that you explain all the techniques you use so that others can find inspiration in your builds. Keep up the great work!

I hate when people say illegal building techniques. If it works or fits it’s fine. LEGO is about being creative and that’s exactly what you are which is why this build is so amazing. Those it’s illegal people need to go back to building sets by instructions and leave the creative builds to people like you. ;)

Awesome. I just got done building a circular tower with only 3 different pieces the critical one being that 2-stud oval in order to make the bend. Love the tube idea for strength, off to inspect my stash of Evergreen tubular styrene for 3 mil, thank you!
I build the starwars Tie bomber a few days ago and even in this official set Lego uses this technic so its a legal one.

Thanks but no I will not be making instructions.
It's such a nice design, a real honor for the building. The technic brick to me is not illegal, its such a daft term anyway. The only thing I find sort of illegal is when people use flex tubes inside stuff to clip on and it doesn't really fit or comes loose. We should always try to build things that aren't so flimsy , but again calling it illegal is stupid . The wedge plates have been used by lego many times and even the hinged brick connections have been used by them for star destroyer designs in the past, although I appreciate your design does put a bit of pressure on the bricks . Its a real masterpiece though mate , love it 😍

Illegal in this and many others refers to connections that can damage your pieces over time. Many techniques were "illegal" and are now common due to improved moulding. For example clip and tile connection.

Thank you for showing us your techniques for making your big buidings stick together and being able to work with qngles we don't usually see in Lego builds. This building is really amaxing. Seen a few others try to make the same building here on youtube, but none of them are as big or as detailed as yours. Do you plan to place this in your city once it is done or will it be for display only?
@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, my main plan is for shows at some point, but I am wanting to do a city display on the floor, for more large buildings like this.
Im pretty sure illegal building techniques are only illegal because they put stress on the bricks which may ruin their quality and longevity. But, if you're not planning on reusing the bricks then i don't see an issue! Such a cool build!
@greymanpl
Ай бұрын
In some cases it's extreme stress, you can see that these technic bricks do not even line up - the distance between the wholes is not equal to the distance between two studs.
Whaouuuu beautiful

@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Hey Joseph thanks 😊
The technique you are using to put the underside of bricks towards the exterior of the building might actually be "illegal" as it could put too much stress on the bricks. However, there is a really simple alternative to this, which is to just use the back side of those headlight bricks. The square hole here is made for studs to fit perfectly.
@aljazslemc9569
Ай бұрын
Was thinking the same thing. Gets trickier when you need to offset the brick for the top bit of detail. You'd have to add a jumper, which effects the dimensions. Of course rotating the headlight so that the bottom faces out fixes that but then your plates stick out different amounts... you could use clips and bars... so many options if you really wanted to do it... but this isn the cheapest and most structurally sound
Wow! Love the technique! I don’t see anything wrong with the technic brick and plates as you showed I think it’s genius and that building is AWESOME! Keep doing cool stuff.

@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Thanks, I always mention illegal because a few people always comment that about everything I build. Already had 2 on this post in the comments 😆 🤣
4:04 technically it’s an irregular icosidagon. Because it does have points and instead has many bricks. But I do get what you mean
How exactly are the stud arches done? I'm assuming hollow studs with a tube
@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Yes you are correct
The flatiron building is really coming together! When I first saw you were doing this project, I thought you would build half as many floors. How much does all that Lego cost?
@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Thanks, nope this is a dream build for me, so I wanted to match it as close as possible. A rough guess for this building would be 6k, thats assuming my estimate of 60k pieces is accurate.
Whoever complains about the 'illegal techniques' of studs into the Technic brick holes needs to do some research; pretty sure LEGO themselves have been doing that for about 5 years now!

Hey, LEGO uses steel reinforcing, LEGO uses glue and LEGO uses parts not available to us mere mortals. Therefore if LEGO can “cheat”, so can we.

None of these are illegal techniques. An illegal technique is defined by Lego themselves as one that puts undue stress of the bricks.
@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
I totally agree, but others in the comments dont. To me if it fits and works its good. 😀
Lol. Turns around to reveal 2 lego sky scrapers
Connectings studs to the holes of a Technic brick is in fact an illegal building technique because it puts stress on the parts. There is a way to achieve the same effect in a "legal" way - Lego did that in the Police Station Modular. 😀
@BevinsBricksWorld
Ай бұрын
Really dont care, I enjoy building the way I build and I share for people interested.

Kragle
geez, the lego community is so uptight lol
So according to the Lego group you are using an illegal technique. The modified plate 1x4 with 2 studs cannot be plugged into more than 1 technic hole. You have it plugged into 2 holes one on each of 2 bricks. You can see the misalignment of the bricks meaning it is under stress at 1:15 on the video. I mean no disrespect but Lego does categorize that as illegal for now.
@no_drama_wanted_here

Just as an update one single stud into a technic hole is legal. More than 1 into multiple holes is illegal.
