    You don't cut down the aspect ratio, because that increases film grain, which then lowers the picture quality and means more work to remove it. Watch Filmmaker IQ's episode about aspect ratios for more on this.

    usually this involves post processing techniques. in the case of audio, which is the field i am more confident about it goes throughout restoration, and high quality analogue and digital post processing. in the case of audio, it can involve compression, eq, limiting, but also post-processing, such as reverbs, delays, etc., etc., and re-treating the spatialisation features of the many multi-channel formats. in the case of video, you are right, color correction, etc.

    in audio engineering mastering is the part that is adjusting the levels of different sources, so that you can hear evrything, and nothing is to loud. a remaster would me redoing this process, often it is simply giving it a boost in the low-mid range of tones, tho...

    In the case of animated movies, take Toy Story for example, what they’ll do is update the textures (Image files that makes up the look, sort of like paint) to match the higher resolution, and slightly modify the models (Basically a 3D object that ultimately makes up the shape of the object, like a 3D model lamp.) to give them more fine edges so that when viewed on a higher-res display, the choppy looking model wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb. And of course, everything else that was mentioned in this video.

    I remember seeing the blu ray of ghostbusters years ago and it said right on the cover "taken from a 4k remaster!" I understood blu ray as 1080P and found that confusing. In other words, its a fancy way of saying they used a new 4k scan to make the blu ray. While the blu ray wasnt 4k the source was, ensureing best picture possible. Ive also seen remastering of tv shows as well. It all depends how it was done: on flim or tape. Tape is a tv raster and while AI can make it 8k its only as good as the source its taken from.

    Ok, so I know this video is almost 5 years old but do you guys know any of the programs used to "remaster" movies? I've been wanting to work with this for a while and lately I've started working a project to remaster some old shows openings (like Star Trek DS9 or Stargate Atlantis) but I just can't find programs that actually let me enhance the image itself. I've tried using editing programs and scaling programs but didn't get very far...

  • @TalesOfWar

    +Chris Cunningham Indeed. It's a shame about season two though. It was kind of... not the same standard. They gave that to another team with the intention of spending twice as long per season by splitting up the task. You can see the fruits of this with season three, it looks fucking amazing! Especially the first episode. The rest was done by CBS so the amazing quality returned for the remaining seasons. Not that season two was that bad, just not quite as well done as the others.

  • @ChrissonatorOFL

    @ChrissonatorOFL

    9 жыл бұрын

    TalesOfWar Season 4 was outsourced to another company, luckily, they did a much better job, but still not CBS Digital quality. CBS was really pissed about how season 2 turned out, apparently the company had the audacity to ask for more money and it would do better next time. In the end, CBS Digital did seasons 1, 3, 5-7. HTV did season 2, Modern Videofilm did season 4.

  • @TalesOfWar

    @TalesOfWar

    9 жыл бұрын

    ***** Modern Videofilm did a good job with 4. I didn't know they outsourced that too, I thought it was just 2. I'm just wondering how well the rest would have turned out if they had as long to spend on them as they did for 3. I was genuinely shocked (in a good way) when I saw the opening episode of that season and how it looked more like a film than a TV show. The whole thing impressed me really, you never realised just how much detail they put into those sets in previous releases and TV play.

  • @ChrissonatorOFL

    @ChrissonatorOFL

    9 жыл бұрын

    TalesOfWar Yea, season 2 and 4 were outsourced. Of course, for _Best of Both Worlds, Part 2_ in season 4, CBS Digital did that too, to maintain quality consistency, but from _Family_ to _In Theory_ it was MVF, CBS Digital picked back up on the last episode _Redemption, Part 1_ of season 4 and did every season after that. :) Yea, the opening shot in "Evolution" made my jaw drop compared to the original composite, with the way the blues from the warp engines now play with the red-orange lighting of the star, it's very nice.

    +Emil Bozhilov Those old films were shot on an actual roll of film. Film's pretty high res, pixel wise it's around 2.5k on smaller rolls, however some can be super high res (like 70mm vistavision/panavision) . Some studios will scan the film and then have a retouching company touch up the scanned images to make them free of specks and dust. Then it's put together again with the new footage/new copy replacing the old copy. Quite expensive, though some historic films have done a beautiful job of being restored - though, they are secrets close to my heart haha. In summary, the studios always had a hi res copy of the film that looked beautiful from since they released the film originally, the problem was that DVD/vhs/laserdisc made it look like crap - now that blu rays exist we can have closer quality to what the master looks like at the comfort of home. It was only the distribution copy that was ugly.

    +Emil Bozhilov Back then there were no high res TVs. All TVs had a "resolution" around 800x600. Higher resolution TVs have been affordable for the most buyers maybe from the start of 2000s if even then. Also there were no high capacity mediums. Video tapes would have had to be much larger to record high res footage, for which there really was no need, as no one had the equipment to utilize any higher resolutions. Blu-rays and HD-DVDs were the first to have the required capacity for high res.

    +Tyler Watthanaphand Video and Audio mastering work exactly the same - you don't master/level to studio grade gear, you master so it looks decent on what 99% of the people own - and they own shittyass TFT panels and Beats by dre.

    +Tyler Watthanaphand There is a slight green hue coming from the green screen, called color spill. Most people won't notice because it's ever so slightly green around the edges.

    I am really sad when remastering of old black and white movie removes those right corner flashing white dots, which indicated to projectionist that movie reel is on it's end and he must swap next one. It is part of movie history and part of charm of these movies, people who are still watching them don't care or are upset when you do something like that, so don't waste your money and stop doing that, please.

    Lazuardi Mahardika / Alpha X funny thing is that my 19'' 1280x1024 displays have almost the same quality like my 1080p 24'' screen has.. just a little lower in ppi.. but noone was talking about "hd" back in those days as far as i remember..

    Red Dwarf. Originally, the show was released on VHS. People threw a fit when the show was re-released onto DVDs as "remastered" with no option for it not to be. This in itself would have been fine if they hadn't gone crazy with the cheapass CGI effects overlaying old models. It looked horrible and people complained, so they re-re-released the DVDs on their original forms. Don't mess with Red Dwarf fans. Lol
