MASTER OF THE SEAS runs down MAWJ in Breeders' Cup Mile thriller

Charlie Appleby enhanced his fine Breeders’ Cup record as Master Of The Seas flew home late to deny fellow Godolphin raider Mawj in a rip-roaring conclusion to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita.
With Saeed bin Suroor’s 1000 Guineas heroine tracking the hot pace set by Japanese challenger Win Carnelian, in contrast William Buick had Master Of The Seas held up towards the rear of the field from his outside draw in stall 14.
The order remained unaltered swinging the turn for home when Oisin Murphy decided to angle out Mawj and send the ultra-tough Classic winner for home in what looked a race-winning move.
However, Buick’s patience was rewarded and as the wire approached, Master Of The Seas had one last lung-busting thrust in him to edge out Mawj and lead home an all-British and all-Godolphin one-two.
It was the third straight victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile for both Appleby and Buick following their successes with Space Blues (2021) and Modern Games (2022), while the Moulton Paddocks handler now has 10 Breeders’ Cup victories to his name.

I think it's made up about 8 lengths in the last furlong and a half. Probably 6 lengths in the last furlong alone where it really got going.

@@darm1735 i didn't say that did i? The horse came from far out the back and then far out wide and still got up at the very death. It's not an either or. In this particular race, the horse deserves the vast majority of the credit

Well done Godolphin. It's a shame Charlie's horses were so out of form for much of the season. This performance was similar to Yabir's effort in the Turf race two years ago.

@@JPwhoknows yep similar luck for me. I've picked 2 per race in lots of different combos. Had the one two in first two races and a winner in every other race except for Mawj yet still haven't made a penny. Have 3 trebles awaiting 3 favourites, surely at least one will land 🤞

@Suemaher Yeah, that would have been more fitting, unfortunately racing can be a harsh game, at least Cody's Wish ended his story well.

@@nightowl7459 It was a shame they both ran a great race. Cody's wish what a story its been. Godolphin have been brilliant with that family but I think they have a tough horse there and hope he makes a gd Sire.

@@suemaher5282 Yeah, they both ran great races, it's just unfortunate that their has to be a second, I thought it could have been a dead heat, as for Cody's Wish, it's good that he's gone out on Saturday winning not and brought a happy ending to the story, hopefully he will make a successful sire, it's good that he's by Curlin who was a good horse himself.

@@nightowl7459I don't think we've heard the last of Cody's Wish. Melbourne Cup Tuesday I always listen to it on 5 live. Frankie and Ryan Moore will find it tougher there but u never know.

@@suemaher5282 Hopefully we haven't, I always found it great that out of the many horses they could have associated with that boy Cody, it turns out to be a champion, going to be listening to the Melbourne cup myself this year, didn't know it was covered by five live, was intending to listen to it on William Hill radio if they covered it?

When I saw it the first time I 🤔 💬 he had lost how he got up after losing all that ground coming wide is amazing he showed an amazing turn off foot to catch his stable mate I wonder 🤔🧐 what price he was a furlong out 😉😉 PEACE ✌️
