Master Complex Photogrammetry Volumes with This Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

A 'How To' on complex photogrammetry volumes but it applies equally well to LiDAR data as well.
Volumes that are up against embankments or inside bunkers can be tough to calculate accurately.
In this tutorial video we take a close look at a logical approach to this problem and the result we achieve when using 3 different pieces of software.

Wow, this is great. Thank you. It's late here and I'm very tired but I'll watch it again tomorrow. As it soaks into my dense brain it'll answer questions and doubts that I've had.

Hi thank you for the great explanation, can you please explain more on how to create the custom surface that includes the embankment surface?

Hey great content, you certainly have extensive knowledge. Im new to Metashape and have been having some issues with exporting then viewing in Metashape viewer and keeping my elevations that i see while my project is open. Is there any way we can setup a call?

Hello, I am discovering your videos and they are very good, congratulations, I have a question for you, is it possible and how reliable is it to calculate a volume in Metashape, but from an excavation? thank you

Hi - thanks so much for watching! Yes certainly, you can calculate the volume excavated in the same way you would calculate the volume dumped. In my experience, the accuracy is very good and comparable to many other software packages. Of course, the accuracy of the data processing plays a role as well, but so long as that is done well, the volume will be accurate.

Great video, I have a question. Far as volume calculation. Have you ever compared Drone deployed to Metashape to see how they compare on measuring a stockpile. If so, which application was the most accurate?

Hi - no, I can't say I have. I have compared Metashape to TerraSolid and Global Mapper, as seen in this video and found them all to compare very well to each other. So I know Metashape is pretty decent, but can't speak about Drone Deploy. I would imagine that for simple stockpiles it should be good, but I have no idea about how it handles complex situations.

It looks like Metashape and ContentCapture would be the top contenders for 3D images in my opinion. With Pix4D being a close runner up.

Which cheapest drone can do the work

I would suggest that any drone with a decent camera could be used for this purpose I would suggest that the Mavic Mini I use in some of my videos would be suitable. However, that comes with a large caveat. Will you be using GCPs or not? What is your processing method? Processing software? How carefully will you plan the image capture? Who will perform the calculations? A qualified Land Surveyor/Mine Surveyor, GIS professional etc. or will the data processor be using automated software? I would suggest that the more experienced you/the user has in the field of survey, the lower cost capture platform you could use. Keep in mind however, that little is related to the drone and it's more about positioning and most importantly, the camera. A great drone with a cheap, low quality camera would be far worse than a mid-range drone with a mid-range camera.
