    Acheron. 12:19 Greek mythology. A God of fire. The story is based on a true story. The ship was the constitution. (Called Iron sides.) In the real version it didn't loose to the British cause its still a commissioned warship to this day. And matienes and sailors serve aboard. (Look it up) the surprises us based on a French ship the Mariposa (butterfly) french frigate. If I come off as being arrogant forgive me. I'm very knowledgeable on history warfare languange and some other stuff. I love to share mostly cause I think it informs or educates there's nothing I care about more. To be educated is to truly be free

    A great human moment is just after the boy loses his arm. The captian gives him the history of Lord Nelson. The picture of Lord Nelson shows him after he also lost an arm. What a great way to inspire a young lad who was suffering such a big loss.

    9:13 Because what he did (singing along with the men) was a breach of conduct as an officer in the navy. As such, he is not supposed to "mix and mingle" with the common sailors. He is supposed to lead them and to command them, not to fraternise with them. That's what the crew and the other officers expect of him, and that's also why everybody stopped singing as he chimed in, and Aubrey giving him that look as well.

    14:17 poor children, right?? Later in the movie we see the same poor child leading a boarding party into the Acheron, screaming like a bloody Viking. I'm pretty sure that chap is gonna make a fine officer in the King's Navy probably an admiral given enough time.

    I grew up with both this film and the Hornblower series, both of which are fantastic at showing people the world of Nelson's navy. The books this film is based on even come with a dictionary of naval terminology. In the British Navy at this time, unlike the army (who swore oaths of fealty to "king and country"), the sailors sworn their fealty to the captain, who swore his fealty to the King. Part of what that mean was that the captain of the ship was basically the King and could do as he pleased with the men under his command, especially when it came to punishments. This was the way of things until WWI and when someone accused First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill of messing with naval tradition, Churchill responded, "What tradition is that, but rum, sodomy, and the lash?" As for Master and Commander, it is Captain Jack Aubrey's rank, signifying that he commands a ship-of-war that is too big for a lieutenant to command. Without patronage, Master and Commander was the highest rank someone could achieve. In Nelson's Navy, the proper starting age for a midshipman is 12. In 7th Grade science, when my class was going over Charles Darwin's expedition to the Galapagos and the theory of evolution, I convinced my teacher to let me bring this film into class to show the parts with the doctor. It was a hit with my classmates. Despite not being based on an actual event, this is a great historical film in that while other films try to shape history to better fit the narrative, this film takes the painstaking time to shape its narrative around the actual history. This is rare in Hollywood.

  • @Pawniac
    @Pawniac4 ай бұрын

    I assume the movie selection is most likely done via Patron polls, but since you watched "Master And Commander" you HAVE to watch Das Boot. It's a WW2 submarine movie from the German perspective and it is one of the most, if not the most, realistic and accurate depictions of the life inside a WW2 submarine. I cannot sing the praises of Das Boot enough.

    6:45 I love how he gives him a book on Lord Nelson. Nelson lost an arm from cannon fire and still went on to become the stuff of legend. A good way of encouraging a young lad who just lost an arm. There was a sarcophagus made for a Cardinal, who left it behind when he had to flee England after their conversion to Protestanism. It was that lavish it looked like the Tomb of a God and the English never buried anyone in it. Not even any of their monarchs, as they said no one less than Christ come again was worthy of it. They buried Nelson in it.

    In the book, it was an American frigate. We never sold any of these frigates to any country. These six extra large fricets for the heart of the American Navy built with some of the hardest wood available and built to be larger and faster than any other frigate. The idea was they could destroy any other frigate and escape any capital ship.

It's such a well-done film that "Star Trek" lovers readily embrace, even those who honor the original series, 1966 to 1969. Its title is "GALAXY QUEST" starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Justin Long (quite the all-star cast!). Many reaction vids here on KZread.

    The Character of Lucky Jack is based on Thomas Cochran who had a tiny ship called The Speedy (in the movie it's called "Surprise"). He captured more than 50 ships and had an advantage to the bigger ships, like Lucky Jack and the Surprise. His deck was lower than the bigger ships guns could aim. He would sail right up next to them and have almost free reign to do all the damage he wanted. Interesting guy. I love this movie.

    Something most people can't get..... navigation with a sextant. Anywhere in the world, was like being in space, a best guess. Until inventors perfected a lay down compass, and a clock that could work in any position, navigation back then was like saying, walk or drive from Southern Texas to Detroit Michigan, and without a map compass or GPS, u have to be within 5 miles.

It is an excellent depiction of naval warfare at the time, just as Glory is an excellent depiction of land warfare in the Civil War era (not much different than Napoleon's time). An excellent review as always. And double kudos for recognizing Billy Boyd who played Pippin in LOTR (still my favorite set of movies ever). Master and Commander is a very under-rated film...and yes...lots of jargon, period dialog, and information thrown out (which is maybe why it didn't do as well as it should have when released)...so no need to apologize for periods of quietness. Perhaps I've missed it (these old eyes do that at times), but is there a "link" for your Ko-Fi donations? From time to time I do donate on there (mostly to Kirsty at Kirsty's focus...a KZread channel dedicated to the Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West franchise), and would donate to yourself.
