    Since I was too young to see this in the cinema (6 years old), I went and saw the re-release in 3D right before the sequel came out, and it was amazing, it’s insane how much CGI they used for this, and for 2009, it still looks incredibly real.

    In the extended version of the movie, you learn more about the school that Grace had opened to teach the Na'vi English (I think it was 5 years before Jake and the others had arrived). That is why so many of the Na'vi can speak English. They learned it very quickly... They also quickly learned how greedy and evil most humans that came to Pandora for the Unobtanium can be. Neytiri's sister, Sylwanin, and several other students from Grace's school decided to attack one of the mining sites... and the military forces came to the school (where Sylwanin and the others were trying to seek safety). She and other Na'vi were gunned down in cold blood. Grace said a line in that scene, (something along the lines of) "The Na'vi learned all they needed to know about us that day." Grace's school was then abandoned and she was no longer allowed into the village. So when Jake became accepted by the tribe, he convinced Mo'at (Neytiri's mother) to allow Grace to come back and see the children she had taught. You might notice that the Avatars that Jake, Grace, and Norm "drive" have four fingers and a thumb (like a human)... The Na'vi have only have three fingers (and a thumb). To create the Avatars, they used human DNA mixed with the Na'vi DNA (likely to make it easier for the human mind to connect to the Avatar). The finger difference will become relavant in the next film... Also, this never made it into the final version of the film, but Norm and Trudy had a relationship... and that was also part of the reason that Norm started being friendly to Jake again.

    I don't get the hate people hate for Avatar. Like, it's become normal to dunk on it, but despite the simple storytelling, the story itself is not bad. I kinda like it, because it shows how an empty person can find meaning in a new way of life. The Na'vi life gave Jake a second chance in more ways than one. People who say that Jake betrayed his own species overlook that the story of Jake is not just about the survival of humanity, but about a man looking for healing and purpose after suffering the death of the closest person to him (the movie didn't dive deeply into Jake's connection to his twin, but even if the two of them went their separate paths in life, twins, especially identical twins, share a really close connection. I wish the movie showed Jake struggling with his grief, just like how the movie didn't show how Neytiri was suffering the loss of her own sister. This could have made both characters feel much deeper and relatable). Aside from characters though, the visual effects bring this movie to life. The motion capture is top notch, and still hold up so well over 10 years later.

  • @katonnor

    @katonnor

    "Jake betrayed his own species" is wrong on so many levels. He betrayed the RDA and he wasn't the only human to do so. He joined the Navi who are actually not against humans. They tried to save Grace, they allowed some humans to stay in their planet. They fought to protect their home and had nothing against the humans that were not a threat to them. He may have became a Navi full time and decided to live among them but that's no different from someone choosing a more simple way of life. For example if someone decided to get rid of all their technology and live among nature. If he was going to remain there full time then it was a very practical decision to stay in a body that could walk and breathe safely there

    It is not even close, in any respect, to Star Wars..... Like, are you serious? To even suggest such a thing shows an astonishing level of ignorance. Avatar was technologically impressive, the cgi and mocap were definitely a step forward, but Star Wars... Entire companies were created out of that film (ILM, THX and Skywalker Sound to name 3) the entire visual and special effects of that movie had to be either created from scratch or perfected. Nothing has come close to the industry changing, monumental advancement of Star Wars in 1977. Avatar was a leap forward, but by miles, not the light years that was Star Wars. The advancement in 3D tech that was the majority of Avatars "achievement" in film is now a funny little anecdote in the history of film, as the 3D fad has come and gone.

    34:52 James Cameron wrote the original script for Avatar right after he did Terminator 2. He waited almost 20 years for the technology needed to make the movie to be invented, and invented some of it himself such as digital 3D capture direct to a drive instead of on film. Avatar is one of the movies you really have to see in 3D, because it was FILMED in 3D, not converted, and it is literally the benchmark movie to show what a 3D movie can and should be

    I couldnt tell if the download/copy you watched had translations for the Na'vi, but there was supposed to be subtitles. If your going to watch the second one, make sure you have one with subtitles. Also one thing to mention, the big Ikran, he chose Jake. Like how Eywa chose Jake when he first met Neyteri. We know this because Jake was "Toruk Macto", as it was foreshadowing what happens at the end. As Neyteri tells the story about her great grandfather, how he brought all the clans together during a time of great sorrows. Just like how Jake did. Also, how Neyteri told Jake how he would know if the Ikran chose him, and she said, "He will try to kill you". Just like how the Big Ikran tried to kill Jake, and if you look back, he only tries to "kill/bite" Jake.

    If you were to watch the full extension it shows a bit of more story on the characters in some bits that were actually fully rendered and run in the movie but they were just taken out

    Conservatively I've seen 400 movies at the cinema, this is the only one I ever went to see more than once, I went three times. The awe factor was somewhat diminished with the sequel, most big budget CGI effects have caught up after all. It was still an amazing follow-up. Cameron's reasoning for the story is that he realized that he can spend a lifetime working on nature conservation and never do as much good as these movies are doing, reminding us that no matter how technological we get as a species, earth is still what keeps us all alive in the end.

    29:30 - I know it may be all too easy to get wrapped up in this, but if someone came at you with a spear and you had a gun, I'd expect you to use your gun. It doesn't matter who you are or whose side you're on: in a fight to the death you do everything in your power to survive and slay the other party. As an extension of that, in a war you should never look for opportunities to increase the number of casualties on your own side. Resolving conflict through "violence" pretty much by definition involves using all of one's advantages to "overcome" the other party like an obstacle rather than trying to work together in any "fair" way. To accept this isn't to accept violence but merely to accept that violence _is_ violence.

    i have some major conceptual problems with Avatar, - they connect minds to hollow bodies and make them live and think , probably over hundreds or thousands of kilometers distance but then the boss of the entire operation, Parker Selfridge, learns that Eywa is a planet wide neural system with its enourmos storage capacity , he claims " what have you been smoking ?" .... - how many years is Parker on Pandora, how many years Grace, and just now Grace informs Parker, her boss and head of all the operations on Pandora, about a possible , planet - wide neural network ? what is this ? - if the humans have the technology to drift minds to avatars, shouldn't they be able to connect to Eywa instantenously ?
