I was introduced to Massive Attack in the early 90’s. The music carried me through some of the most turbulent and most memorable times of my life. please don't flame me for saying this, but I listened to Mezzanine recently and it did sound a little bit "late 90's". don't get me wrong, its timeless music in that its brilliant then, now and in the future.... forever. but it doesn't sound like music of today. its dated. that in itself is not a criticism!! hell, music was better 20 years ago! I hope that makes sense.

well yes, Coldacre, mezzanine; but is that not one over those more "overplayed albums " that don't really showcase the best of the best. see, I am no expert in Massive Attack, save one thing. i may have not heard a lot but whichever album(s) it was, not to mention the sick AF stuff above, was well just sick AF, and the little i did hear was very memorable and epic on a whole different level, just like ^ these ^ songs. there is some really dope stuff going on here, but mezzanine... meh? now that being elucidated haha, i agree that 90s music was in fact really butt kicking music hands down. AND the late 90s might have been creatively waning a bit but these guys rounded of the decade in freakin awesome fashion thats for sure too

Iv'e been a meth attic for over fifteen years and still battling. Musicians like these guys and Portishead, Eliiot Smith, Simon Joyner, Sigor Ros, Neva Dinova, Bright Eyes, just to list a few, are the olny things that help keep my tippy toes on the ground while the rest of me is drifting away. Music like this helps me embrace and accept the darkness that is just as much of a part of our daily lives as the light. If it werent for artists like this I would have chosen to leave this world a long time ago, I am so fortunate for there existence, there passion, there wisdom, and there message. I will always keep them close to my broken heart and feed them to my sickened brain on a regular basis.

I’m really sorry to hear that and do believe no-one should be born into this world to suffer - but I’m also happy you found solace in music. I myself have been struggling with depression for over a year and the depths of despair are infinite. It’s clear mankind chose the wrong path in history and some of us are more susceptible than others. It’s not that we are weaker: we just stayed strong for far too long and at some point we were bound to break. So keep strong.

As a youth growing up in Bristol, i went to many Wild Bunch house parties. Two decks, passing the mic and da spliffs. Willy Wee, Delge, Grant, Mushroom et all mashing it up til the beast come try shut things down, or the sun come up. I left Bristol to travel, not long after their first 12" (as Massive Attack) had dropped. Daydreaming. It was quite well received, and i guess u could say they were just beginning to gain some real traction in the music biz. But what would I have known, i was only 18.... So I travelled for 6 months or so, before ending up in Australia, where i was hoping to stay a while. One day I walked into the big record store in the middle of Melbourne, and my bloody jaw hit the floor... Hanging from the ceiling were these massive (pardon the pun) 'posters' for Blue Lines. Well i say posters, but they were a bit more than posters. More like floor to ceiling murals. I was like 😲wtf, that escalated quickly!!! Needless to say, a purchase was in order. To this day it's still one of my favorite albums of all time. True story 😆

Only problem is a high-pitch tone during 4 later songs, only first one doesn't have it. It is not that disturbing during Teardrop because vocals and guitar goes thru that scale, but in Mezanine which is in lower scale it's very noticable :( Is there any possibility for you to clean up this bit? I don't know it is something in register of 9-10kHz.

I downloaded the track from youtube and did spectrum analysis on the quiet parts with the most noise. I thinks its really really bad quantization noise. Its not a single frequency, it's a series of frequency spikes across 600-12K, at abt that freq it drops off. It was probably recorded on an old digital player, or it was processed using an old computer, or it was compressed using shitty software that doesn't anti-alias the track after significantly lowering the sampling rate. Why anyone would lower a sample rate below that of a CD is beyond me... unless the equip used was REALLY old and had no real storage capacity (think megabytes, not gigabytes, ya, that old)... its the digital equivalent of tape hiss. Its not really that bad and I only really noticed it when it was almost silent.

Quantization is timing correction, how would that affect the sound quality?

  • @nodrogdivad

canturgan I may have flubbed on the exact nomenclature but the effect is that it creates the high pitched noise you're hearing. It happens b/c for some reason (again, not a professionally trained engineer) the highest pitch at the end of the lowered freq. range available via the *sampling rate* (

canturgan To give a simple explanation, he's talking about value quantization of the actual digital bits, not the time quantization in midi. The digital bits have a discrete number of values they can occupy and so do not perfectly represent the musical signal, causing quantization noise because instead of representing a perfect tone, there are jagged edges introduced to the waveform which you hear as ringing. PS all digital signals are quantized. It's just that most of the time it's inaudible.
