After a short break in July from the 1997 tour in Turkey, Massive Attack would return to Bristol with cassettes of Turkish music which would be the inspiration for what would eventually become Inertia Creeps. The Turkish music was overheard by Massive Attack at a club in the Turkish city Istanbul and the very percussive nature of it piqued 3D’s interest immediately.

I love how this song introduces itself within the first 24 seconds. I know it’s not even the best part of the song but it has such a comforting and euphoric sound that builds into this sudden shock where the darker sound begins and leaves you on edge for the remainder of the song

Massive Attack master the art of tuning their music to the human heart rhythm. In less than a minute, you no longer know if the music you listen comes from ouside- or rather from inside you.
Lyrics [Verse 1: 3D] Recollect me darling, raise me to your lips Two undernourished egos, four rotating hips Hold on to me tightly, I'm a sliding scale Can't endure, then you can't inhale clearly Out of body experience interferes And dreams of flying, I fit nearly Surrounds me, though I get lonely slowly [Chorus: 3D] Moving up slowly Inertia keeps She's moving up slowly, slowly Moving up slowly Inertia creeps Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly Inertia creeps Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly [Verse 2: 3D] In my home no chrome as clear as See me now with my nearest, dearest Been there when I'm over careering Room shifting is endearing Between us is our kitchen Which you found my irritant's itching Been here before, been here forever [Chorus: 3D] Moving up slowly Inertia keeps Moving up slowly Inertia creeps Moving up slowly Inertia keeps Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly Moving up slowly She comes Moving up slowly Inertia creeps Moving up slowly She comes [Verse 3: 3D] I make no sound in my eider-down Awake I lie in the morning's blue Room is still, my antenna in you Nylon burns the bedspread with two Gravity's zero, see me stall I bounce off walls, lose my footing, and fall Can be sweet though incomplete though And the frames will freeze, see me on all fours It's been a long time [Interlude: 3D] She comes She comes I want to x you She comes I want to x you She comes X [Outro: 3D] I caught your radio waves I caught your radio waves With a tin can and string Say you string me along Say you string me along Say inertia creeps Inertia creeps and she comes Say she comes Say she comes Say she comes Say she comes

I used to think it was equating strangulation with orgasm, then I just watched the video and it's an actual snuff film. The actual aboutisms, I think that depends on your own point of view. I'd say it's more about playing your part and owning up to your guilt in any situation, from victim to viewer, now that I've watched the video. The video is from the the point of the camera man...who eventually is also shown to be at least active in the cover up. ..he's got the wonderful role of every single player wrapped up in one.

Thats the thing about trip hop, you play the record and the landscape changes. The ability to override the listner surrounding and take him to a different place is one of the most important skills for a musician. At least that's what I strive for makeing music.
Utterly brilliant song and video. The entire album seems to capture the paranoia and secret thoughts of those living in a thriving city at night..
Probably the best song of Massive Attack

There was this horse at the Lancer's club where I used to live. His name was Trickster because he was apparently hard to break and a real manipulative bastard. He was black all over and really beautiful. He liked me a lot and I liked him and eventually I rode him. This song reminds me of riding Trickster.

+Burak Üstadımız The rhythm of "Inertia Creeps" has a strong tsifteteli influence, inspired by nights out in Istanbul. Robert del Naja acquired some tapes of such music, which were used as a basis for the song.[2] The song is composed in the key of D-sharp minor[1] and it runs at a tempo of 84 beats per minute.[3] It samples the song "ROckWrok" by New Wave band Ultravox.

I reposted in English, because I thought it was such a beautiful placement, and I think it should be read by more people. "IMassive Attack is more than a reflection of an era. It is a phantom asteroid which returns to set its sights on sound art. A decadent wave charged with paradoxes from which escape obscurantism and the irrational, hypnotic factors defying vulnerable souls in search of the absolute. Their sound architecture is a short tunnel that leads to light!"
This whole album is timeless!

I'm 66... Love music... And there was, not so long ago, suddenly, Massive Attack... I'm completely blown away... I love it...
I listen to this song a lot, it doesn't get old in the way that others do. I was just listening to it and i said to myself, "bro, this turkish instrument people are talking about is grungy. This is grunge, bro." Really though, it's kind of true, and it's not a bad thing. It's a well produced and enthralling fusion of a lot of sounds, and the video just complicates it even more. 11/10, no further comment
I knew Daddy G's missus from coming into a shop I worked at in Bristol. She only visited a handful of times. A long while after I saw them at Yo Sushi! We both saw each other and I let on to her from a distance before I proceeded to sit down. Throughout my meal Daddy G went back and forth to the lavatory on several occasions, eyeballing me as he slowly made his way back to his seat. On returning from his last visit to the lav before leaving, he passed me and did a sudden U-turn. He goes "Hey bruv, where do I know you from?" I replied that maybe he'd seen me out in the clubs that I'd spotted him at a few times. He said "Nah mate. Nah. I seen you somewhere else". I offered another possible explanation and asked him whether he visited the shop where I worked (I hadn't seen him there personally although he had an account there). He let out a deep chuckle and gave a knowing "Oh yeah!". Looking cheerful and somewhat relieved, he gave me a fist bump and went on his way. I can only suspect that he'd wondered how his missus knew me and she probably couldn't recall where from, thus giving Daddy G reason to rack his brains, believing that something untoward had gone on between us or something.
This is the Turkish rhythms! 🇹🇷
That chair is iconic. I recently watched a documentary and a journalist being interviewed had a similar chair. Made me like him even more.
