I used to play this SO LOUD in my kick ass stereo at 3am totally pissed dancing around my living room in London. In the morning, late morning, I would ask my kindly elderly widowed neighbour if she was disturbed by the loud music and she always said “no darling you just have fun”. She was sweet.

God damn, I saw Portishead on my 18th birthday, back in 1998 and I was candy flipping which made it even better! Beth Gibbins performance was SO intense, her eyes connected with every person in that audience. At the end of the show she jumped down in front of the stage and shook hands/exchanged hugs with everyone in the front row, including me! Set a bloody high bar for other vocalists to meet after seeing her :)

I'm so tired of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just... Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just wanna be a woman From this time, unchained We're all looking at a different picture Through this new frame of mind A thousand flowers could bloom Move over and give us some room, yeah Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just want to be a woman So don't you stop being a man Just take a little look From our side when you can Sow a little tenderness No matter if you cry Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just want to be a woman It's all I wanna be, is all a woman For this is the beginning Of forever and ever It's time to move over It's all I want to be I'm so tired of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just... Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be...

Freaking genius at work here. Portishead was just incredible. Beth being surprisingly audience engaged here. Very Billie Holiday phrasing at the opening few lines, great groove, what's not like? Compare this to most of what passes as innovative pop/rock in 2020 and the comparison is pretty stark. We were lucky to have been alive when music like this was conceived , recorded and performed.
