Maserati's Finest Hour: Why The GranTurismo MC Stradale Was a True Ferrari Rival

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video, at long last I get to drive the enigma that is the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. Gorgeous as it may be, the criticism of the MC Stradale is that even stripped of 100kg, it is still far too heavy to be truly sporting. I find out if that's really the case, or the motoring press were too harsh

Remember that opportunity you never got to buy a Birdcage? Well, regret no more, Maseratisti! The front end of the Maserati swooping low with THAT Modena Neptune Statue trident is unique in all the world. No one looks at a Maserati and says, "Dadgum, is that thar a Chevrolet?" In fact, it just shouts "Italian" like Luciano Pavarotti doing an aria.

I first saw a Maserati Granturismo on the M25 in London in 2008. I fell in love immediately and I followed it for 35 miles. I missed my exit and the meeting I was going to. 6 years later I bought one and cherished it for 9 years. The most beautiful car I’ve ever owned.

  • @TMKuro

Just a little clarification regarding the different gearboxes in the Granturismo: The MC Stradale gearbox was also used in Ferrari Scuderia and shifts at high revs within 60 ms. The Granturismo S MC / F1 gearbox is also great. It is from Ferrari 599GTB Superfast (a V12 with more torque). That is, the clutch and gearbox are robust because they were designed for the high torque of the 599 GTB. Gear shifts at high revs happen within 100ms (when shifting manualy with the paddles). Note that unlike BMW e60 M5 SMG, it is not jerky at all. If shifting becomes a bit more rough by time from clutch consumption, there is a simple official DIY method to make it work smoother again: Press and hold the brake pedal, turn on the ignition (no engine start needed) and hold the brake pedal for 10 seconds. Do NOT confuse either gearbox with the older DuoSelect box which you can find on older Maseratis. The ZF 6HP26 automatic gearbox which you find on the standard Granturismo shifts within 200ms. I read that the Ferrari F430 and Enzo used an earlier version of the Granturismo MC/ F1 gearbox (150ms shifting time in these two Ferraris). It is funny if someones assumes that a shifting time of 100ms is slow while they are lusting for an Enzo with a slower box.;) Trust me, the faster you go and higher you rev, the more fun it is.;)

Nailed it James. I had a new one of these back in 2012...the one with two Enzo seats in it...and the day I spent with it on track (under expert guidance) gave me the confidence to use in properly on road...although on NZ roads, it did always feel a bit wide. One of THE best-sounding cars ever built, no doubt. Ultimately I switched it for the 550 because that is more interactive and satisfying at the kind of speeds we have to drive at out here. I did briefly flirt with installing the Novotec supercharger conversion (660 hp), but discovered that is only available for LHD cars.

So much of the enjoyment is about the theatre. Most reviews focus on what is faster 0-60, or around the racetrack. Who cares. How many people go on the racetrack? I used to race competitively and have been on the track in a road car only once. How often do I do 0-60mph? Never. The true enjoyment for most of us is how you feel when driving at 60-80% maximum. How it sounds when downshifting. How it steers, the feel of the wheel.....the feel of being in something special. If you look back at your car after a drive when it is ticking on cooldown and smile, its perfect for you. Thanks for the reviews.

That’s what I try to communicate when people tell me my Z4 coupe isn’t fast. Went from a ridiculous V8 track car to the Z4 and people don’t get it. The track car is great for 3 days a year, was too stiff and aggressive to be fun on B roads, was brutal. The little Z4 I can take out whenever I feel like and it will blast around the back roads all day without issue. Feel is more important than any statistics.

I've got a 2012 MC S Sportline 4.7, a grade or two below the Stradale I think. Absolutely love the car. The sound is intoxicating. Sure, I've been in and driven much faster cars, but none put a smile on my face like the almost 12yo Granturismo. Looks and sounds the best and still plenty of fun to drive.

"Absolute magic!" One of the most beautiful cars you might see on the road today. I'm never going to sell mine. Bought mine because it has bigger back seat and is more comfortable than a lambo or a ferrari 430 and this makes for a significantly better daily driver.

Credit to Maserati they certainly know how to tune an exhaust. Sounds incredible.

Being a die hard Ferrari loyalist, I've always thought of Maserati as kind of the budget brand of Ferrari. Like Toyota to Lexus. Id buy one once depreciation slaps it across the face and then aspire for the F12 or 812.

A 2016 SVR in blue with silver SVR rims and this one would be a near perfect garage for me (and for my mechanic too).

Lovely looks and sound! We’re these or any other variants of the coupe ever available as a manual or conventional automatic? I’m really warming to Maserati- our Levante has great quality (yes, really) and has a certain Italian warmth and swagger that stands out amongst all the Range-Rovers and Cayennes. I know, as a serial Porsche owner and fan that a Cayenne Turbo is ultimately quicker around a track, but, as you emphasize in your very entertaining review, it’s how a car makes you feel that really matters. I could certainly entertain a Gran Coupe - I need a decent rear seat for my young, but rather tall son…

The Gran Turismo remains one of my favourite cars. I think the problem for Maserati was that it was re-launched as a Ferrari sub-brand, and I don't think their dealer network were ever that interested in selling them; I can remember having a test drive of the 3200 GT in Colchester when it came out, and I don't think the salesman with me was that convinced about the car either. Frankly, you have to have seen Stirling Moss driving in his pomp to remember when Maserati was a household name, and they soon got tagged as a 'poor man's Ferrari', largely overweight and not particularly quick, but I think the Gran Turismo will always appeal to those who don't run with the crowd and has the makings of a long-term classic.

I love the fact that I see so much criticism about the mpg on these, and then in owners clubs and forums some owners who’ve ended up swapping to 4.7 vantages (like me) then realise they’re actually not that bad suddenly 😂🤣😂
