Maserati 3500GT Will Make You Fall in Love
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We're all affected differently. Some people fall in love because their dad or uncle had one. Others fall in love out of necessity, constant breakdowns requiring them to work on their car. For Mr. Frank Mandarano a tour through the Maserati factory in the '60s was enough for him to be smitten. He bought his first Maserati a few years later, a red 3500GT, which promptly broke the day after he bought it. A bearing let go and he had a tough time finding parts.
So he started a Maserati club and began buying parts inventories around the US so that he and his fellow club members would have access when needed. Although he's sold the business, he never considered it work as it was born of his passion for the brand. Frank has a few other 3500s, this one though, he's nicknamed "La Latina" because it was one of five GTs sold new in Mexico City. And he loves driving it on lazy, desert roads calling the noise, "primal." He doesn't shift it too much opting instead to leave it in third gear and power out of turns enjoying the mighty aluminum straight-six and stainless steel exhaust.

And yet a Maserati can't......
Definitively my #1 PL video so far. The car, the dude, his attitude, his knowledge, the cool twist to the story, and that one last thing, "I never consider my self as having a job!"
I remember back in the 80's you could still get a nice 3500 for under $10K! I still regret passing up a Maserati Indy for $7500.00 in 1987! Those days are long gone- shame that the car market has been taken over by investors who look at cars as a way to make money as opposed to those of us who just love to drive our cars......

Agreed. I, personally missed the deal of my life on a 1st generation E Type FHC in 1980. BRG with biscuit interior. Always garaged. Pristine. Always had the sound of a Jag straight inline 6 in my mind from my youth. I was with colleagues in an alley in Montreal, Qc to pick up some stuff for a catalog photo shoot. The guy was stuck with this car, blocking us. We had to push it for us to pass. " What's up with your car, sir ? Won't start. Due AGAIN for a damn tune up. I'm fed up! You want it? Huuuum, how much ? 4,000$ and take it out of my life." Newly wed, new car payments, no money to spare. Aaaaaaarrrgh ! I had to pass. Lifetime regret. :(

Caesar Guzman for a fully restored one? Generally around $200,000 There arent very many of them left now and they are hard to find so they have gotten expensive
I fell in love with this car when I started driving it on a PC game... Test Drive Unlimited.. in my 'virtual garage' of Enzos, Lambos, Jags,,,etc,,,I'd always choose this for a nice 'cruise'.
People like this are needed !!
I grew up with one of these beauties, a red growling beast which was very much loved. Amazing road performance too.
"never cosider my self as having a job" ... love it!

definitely a solid plan to have!...
Timeless design.
Italy still makes good looking cars now, but man, the one's they made in the 60's are some of the best looking most beautiful pieces of art in automotive history.
Take a bow Petrolicious. Nailed another one. Top Shelf feature - as per usual.
Even though Italian cars aren't necessarily as reliable or fuel-efficient as others, they sure are sexy!
I'm a low-tax, small-government kind of guy so as far as I'm concerned his money is his to do with as he pleases. However, when I hear someone say they own four 3500s and I think of the artificial inflation caused by all these old guys buying up cars that keep younger people from getting into classic cars it does annoy the hell out of me. I understand it, beautiful car, but FOUR!!!???

Well he had a restoration company that repaired these cars. We don't know what state they were in when he got them, he may have saved them from being wrecked?
I love that it's on the road in the desert. You can just picture Dean Martin and Sinatra heading out to 'Vegas from L.A on a Friday night. Very classy these Maserati's. And even in today's market still so unappreciated. They were better GT cars than the concurrent Ferraris, more reliable, more comfortable usually better finished.
This guys' story is just about as cool as the car. My favourite installment so far, keep em' coming Petrolicious!.
Such a great film. Petrolicious does it again. Besotted by the car. Maserati's manage to be so understated and elegant.
Great to see you Frank! We are still talking about the Car Guy Tour....wonderful experience. Best of everything, Tim and Julie.
Gorgeous car. One of my all-time favorites.
What a lucky fella to have so much success!
That thing sounds great!! Looks incredible too.
Yet more awesomeness. Easily my favourite channel on youtube.
One of my favourite cars on looks alone; I've not driven one. The shapes in the car are so elegant and have that wonderful superlegerra/touring DNA - a bit like an Aston DB4 in notchback form. Marvelous!

Huge fan of the brand, owned a couple of them myself. Great video.
Gorgeous car and a cool story. Made me reflect on why I fell in love with Maserati in the first place!
`60s GT cars, in general, are just so wonderful to look at and drive. DBs, E-types, Lancias, Lambos, Jensen etc.
Beautiful video...as always!
Pursue your passion and you can make it, it's hard to believe thats possible but he did it. What a boss. I really wanted to see his other cars too though
That is the best love story I've heard in a long time.
nothing short of typical Petrolicious perfection..outstanding
Just beautiful. He obviously adores his Latina with Patina!
220 hp 26 mpg back then? wowwww this car is cooool

This is all very good jazz. Hats off once again guys.

Gorgeous car. I saw one of these n southern Spain a couple of years back. Another bout of car envy.
Sweet car and the first thing I thought of was the sound too
Love this guy :-) "I couldn't find bearings for the engine so I've bought all Maserati dealers' parts" BTW that car (which came first, Volvo P1800 or this?) looks absolutely stunning on the strip.

The 3500 GT came first... if you mean when launched to the public ! 3500 GT = launched in March, 1957 Volvo P1800 = prototype shown in December, 1957 launched in 1961

The P1800 was co designed with Pietro Frua, he worked with Maserati but i don't know if he was involved in the GT3500 but u guess he took some design elements from it.

people don't really understand that back in the day these cars were out selling ferraris. when this car was released maserati was the top. they were top in f1 with the best drivers on the team and no one could stop them and ferrari was left in the dust, it was only after ferrari basically copied the maserati design that they would have success in f1. furthermore as a result of maseratis level of achievement, they outsold ferrari and would continue to do so in the 60's. going into the 70's and 80's the market for these cars never changed, it was old money that purchased these cars, the upstarts at this point were now addicted to lamborghini and ferrari... and they produced very few cars prior to the 1970's as a result, when citroen took over and tried to raise the factory output they ultimately doomed the brand because the market the company participated in was very small. then came the 80's and the company all but almost ceased to exist. but looking back to the 50's and 60's and these cars were among the greatest cars on earth, lamborghini is my favourite brand especially the miura as a car is my favourite. but the ghibli outsold both the miura and the daytona, because the maserati at this time wasn't like the ferrari or the lambo and i feel this identity has been lost ever since citroen, maserati was about gt cars, luxurious gt's not race inspired gt's, ferraris were detuned racing cars. lamborghinis were these crazy powerful outrageous looking and performing supercars, and maserati was the comfortable long distance cruiser that was built for the likes of royalty. now its built for anyone who will pay for one and its a shame

Adam Othman I have always considered myself a 'Maserati Man'. To me, the Maserati GT cars of the 60's & 70's were much better than their rival, Ferrari. The 3500, 5000, Mexico, Ghibli, Bora, Indy, Khamsin, etc. are in a league by themselves...
@adam1othman
8 жыл бұрын
Carlito1988 Im inclined to agree, but in this period i feel that all of the big three were in their own league at the time. would i say they're superior. no i wouldn't, i would say that they all played on an even playing field in terms of technical design. but in terms of what these cars set out to be, maserati was truly in a league of its own. as a gt there was no better car than a maserati. ferrari tried to build gt cars but in my opinion they were always too much of a sports car to ever achieve such with the odd exception of course and as a sports car there was no better car than a ferrari etc... personally I've always been into the classic racing machines of the 30's-60's and i love the old school maserati racing cars, especially the 8cm and the 250f in their day they were easily one of the best and most beautiful cars on the racing circuit.

It's so many elements to make a car company succeed, it makes the experts dizzy. It's sad that Maserati and Alfa pulled the short straw, and I'm curious what they would be like today under other curcomstances.
The plate says Washington, but the scenery says Coachella Valley. Beautiful.
I got to drive one every day to lunch to keep the battery charged. A fantastic car!
if I could pull off videos like this on my channel I would quit my day job..

Up into the the mid 1980's or later you could buy these for nothing. I passed up 3 with bad engines and for under $2,000. You put a small block chevy in them and life was good......I wish I had bought one, now.....

Nice very nice.
Wat a beauty
I came across this post looking for original colors for this car. I have an antique toy model of this car I found in a thrift shop that I intend to build. I enjoyed this video inspite of the real car being quite out of my league financially.
My dream car
Reminds me of a 1950s Ford Thunderbird
220 for a car of that era is a lot of power
Lovely Handsome cars!
Perfect design italiano
Back in the 80s I had a buddy with a 3500GT Touring with a hot rod Buick 215 aluminum block v-8. I had a Mistral at the time and his 3500 was faster. I sold the Mistral for $6,500 in 84'.
I've seen one under full restoration today, just a completely empty sanded shell in a garage.... It took me a few hours later at home to know the model, once discovered... Man... I need one... But I'm afraid it is waaaay out of my price range...
dream job
mild steel exhaust would sound even nicer than stainless steel. ought to try it.
Looks a great car, but the video seemed to cut off at the end...

Yes, you're very fortunate to have found a way to make a good living doing something you really love. I mean it. I consider you more fortunate than the sporty people I see bouncing out from the cabs of their new Rolls Royce's and Bentley's here in Newport Beach to begin a day of shopping or business dealing. What a shame that God doesn't afford every human in this life the opportunity to work a great job and feel some sense of real success. BTW, what do you think of the new Maserati's? Should they market a new retro-update of the 3500GT?
fab
Wondering if there's either a Classic mini or escort (European) or Volvo p1800S video coming up
