This is so beautiful. Mary Martin, one of my few idols, only two years before her death, and Placido Domingo, the greatest of the three tenors (to me, at least). Mary Martin's expression as Domingo sings paints a picture of someone lost in the sheer beauty of his voice. She was, btw, exactly how she appears on stage. She was as gracious to and appreciative of fans as she was talented. A TRUE legend. I miss her daily.

@RMP, fully agree, re Domingo and the fair lass Martin. Here, when Domingo beholds her as if the fairest most enchanting of all, it is sheer magic.

I was there. The evening began with Tommy Tune recreating "It's Not Where You Start." Although most of us didn't stick around for "Goya"; we were already sated.

Whoa. This is the first I've come across anything from that program. I'd heard about it, scheduled the old VCR to grab it, came home: nada. !@#$%^&*!!!! Thanks man, this is a real treat. Two theatre greats, one Broadway, one The Met (and beyond). I won't be mad at you if you find more to upload, esp if it features Placido Domingo. (My missus and I are long time fans, and it's my mission to find any and all recordings of him. She'll be tickled pink when I show her this gem.)

It's so beautiful to watch Mary Martin in this clip. She isn't just singing - she becomes Nellie Forbush again. Her transformation from the beginning of the scene to her wonderment of watching Emile - Placido Domingo - sing and her falling in love with this wonderful man...what a pleasure and a priviledge fot those of us who weren't around when she did the show. It's as much an acting moment as a singing moment.

Yes just goes to show that nearly 40 years after she created the role she could still slip effortlessly back into the character of Nellie Forbush a true legend a true Broadway star.

It is absolutely incredible to see this bit of footage from this concert. Mary Martin was magic from the start of her career to the very end. I can't take my eyes off her as she listens to Domingo sing the song she heard so many wonderful baritones sing to her over the years. And how wonderful that at this point in her career, she heard the song sung to her by one of the greatest tenors of the era. I'm so glad that the audience member who caught this performance was able to focus on Mary Martin's face. As she listens, she sees every word in her mind's eye and she seems to be falling in love for the first time. Her heart is filled with the excitement of the life that her character sees for herself. She is Nellie again. What a precious performer, what a precious spirit was Mary Martin.

All true except that Ezio Pinza her first Emile was a true Bass not a baritone as her subsequent Emile's were that why I so love him singing 'Some Enchanted Evening' there are so few true Bass voices around today like his.
