After growing older amd learning that hia father was responsible for his death, i was completley confused! Just witnessing the dynamics between this father and son explains alot regarding the respect that Marvin Gaye had for his father regardless of his own success! You reach a certain level in life, a certain level of accomplishment and it's not even about money, its about maturity. Father narcissist all about him. Every time his son speaks he claims his sons hopes, emotions etc and makes them his own. His father is obviously gay as well and his conflict inside he projected onto his son. "Im gonna give that to you" the one compliment he squeezes out he needs to make a communal declaration of HIS pride in his sons achievements. Poor Marvin had it all but nothing at all as so damaged by his father.. It's a bittersweet memory. Marvin Gaye was the first artist I heard when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I recall a relative visiting, playing "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye loudly. He was a truly exceptional musician. It's unfortunate that the person who is supposed to be your protector, your own father, can take your life. This is heartbreaking.

From what I’ve heard many people F Gary grey, Dr Dre, even spike lee have been trying to get a bio pic about Marvin in the works for a while but the ideas on the direction of the film and the topics surrounding it is what has it on hold, I feel like with the right actor and if they go all out it could have the potential to be what the movie “Ray” was

I think family relationships are the most complicated. Marvin seemed like such a sensitive soul like anyone who has and will I think he struggled with himself. Rest his soul.

Those words meant a lot to Marvin to hear his Father say those things . Even if they were a lie all children wanna know they are loved by their parents..Aww this hurts my heart his life was cut short and it all traced back to his daddy’s own dysfunction.We gotta break these cycles of pain amongst families so another generation does not go misinformed on what family and love is ☀️

He is so mean to Marvin, omg. “You didn’t make the team,” then tells Marvin he didn’t pray for him to make the team. He’s sick.

Marvin Gaye's father dressed in women's clothing even outside and the children used to tease Marvin. Marvin's father was a cross dress and a Preacher. I don't know how Marvin's mother stayed with that man especially with the way he treated her son Marvin she should've protected him. Marvin died protecting his mother.

Oddly enough, I believe the man was bi. Jan Gaye said in her book that he openly had women coming to "visit" him in his home, and Marvin's mama was also aware of this. And I forget where I heard or read that before I read her book, but it's been out there and she confirmed it. As much as I don't want to, I blame her (Marvin's mama) as well for Marvin's death because she could've found the courage and strength "through God" SOMEWHERE to divorce Marvin Sr. 😢

Wow! This "man" never financially supported his family or even had income, but dressed in female attire wore pink curlers in the neighborhood! Embarrassed the family then beat the shit out of poor Marvin! Had a separate bedroom and had church women in and out in front of his family! Reality TV has nothing on this trick! Smh!!!

As humans, we naturally need our parents love and approval to grow in life. It's a real tragedy when a parent is over crítical and jealous of a child success.

Just so sad, you can see the dynamics of the father always talking down, poor Marvin Gaye jr. he deserved better, a gentleman.
