The whole “infinity stones only work in their own universes” thing is a comics thing that the MCU is apparently changing. In Loki that was a theory for why they didn’t work in the TVA but Loki’s actual wording more implied that there was something about the TVA itself that was directly stopping the stones from working. Presumably Kang didn’t want the stones to threaten him so he designed the TVA to negate their powers.

What I’m wondering is, did no one else get the infinity gems until this point? If having the gems means you can alter the entire multiverse, why did the Watcher seem surprised that Ultron could see him and brake out? Theoretically this should have happened in infinite universes.

  • @BlueWoWTaylan

    @BlueWoWTaylan

There is nothing can they negate their powers though. That was the whole reason why they not working on other universes is the key point about them, so they are balanced that way. If they work on ANY universe across the Multiverse, there is no stopping ANY villain from just using them and jumping to another universe and doing the same with no issue.

I think this is what a live-action Age of Ultron that tries to emulate the spirit of the comic would definitely look like. I do understand why the MCU wouldn’t go this way because it is the “mainline” live-action universe so it’s difficult to make stories with drastic consequences like the AoU comic, outside of universe-shattering events like Infinity War and Endgame. That’s the beauty of What If stories because we get to eat our cake and have it again all at once.

Thing is the MCU is a Universe in the Comic Multiverse with it's own designation and everything, though I think I know what they're doing here that would keep this all working. The all the Events in MCU (Loki/Wandavision/What If/No Way Home/Multiverse of Madness) isn't creating a Multiverse, they're creating an Omniverse. Simply put the MCU Universe is becoming a Multiverse In A Multiverse, and This would also explain how Ultron's Infinity Stones were working outside of what we thought was his Universe. He would technically still be in the MCU Universe but with it now piled on top of itself as a Multiverse, having Perfect Copies of The MCU's Infinity Stones in each Splinter Universe.

its more that the stones didnt work in a place outside of space and time combined with the explanation of how the stones in the mcu work and origin. When we also take into account why comics have this rule the bigger the problem becomes. Marvel comics made this a rule in the council of reeds because the end result of multiverse content is someone is going to use stones against someone with stones. what happens when two stone wielders snap each other. its paradoxical. its like what happened to supreme strange universe but the multiverse. TVA is just a pocket universe outside space time or removed from space and time. Magic is used at episode 6 35:33 so its not like magic can not be used at all outside of time and space. The cannon answer to the stones not working in the TVA is the marvel rule of working in their own universe. MCU going down the same multiverse road content they dont want 2 kangs trying to snap each other or other universes away.

Longshot theory, but maybe we're seeing how the rule/limitation that the infinity stones don't work outside of their timeline came to be? My idea is that they currently work across all timelines because all of those timelines branched from the same sacred timeline- just like the stones the Avengers took in the Time Heist worked when they brought them back to the "main" timeline. Seeing the potential multiversal threat posed by the Infinity Stones, the Watchers decide to intervene by making the stones become inert outside of their universe of origin. I dunno, just thought that might be cool to see.

For anyone (equally) confused by the whole “Infinity Stones only work within their own universe”. In the comics it’s established that Infinity stones only work on their own universe, and different universes because they have their own sets. Now I’m not sure if Ultron in this episode is affecting alternate universes, or alternate timelines. All the episodes we’ve seen so far seem to be directly branched from the sacred Timeline, rather than completely different realities. Loki (the show) seems to imply that different universes have different TVAs that manage their own sacred timelines, which is why Mobius didn’t know about Alligator Loki, he was pruned by a different TVA (maybe, this is all guess work). So either the MCU infinity stones work completely differently to the Comic ones, or they work the same, the MCU has just been using timelines and universes interchangeably.

And secondly you’re acting as if it’s a concrete rule that must exist but in reality the rule only exists because comics constantly change writers and settings so they can’t guarantee that those things will never happen and need to provide an explanation for it but the MCU does have a shared singular story so they can guarantee they don’t happen and therefore don’t need a contingency rule just in case

Very Broad Theory here: Ton of people including myself saying "The Infinity Stones are only supposed to work in their Native Universe" are really confused, and what Was confusing me more was maybe the MCU just isn't connected to the Comics at all and is a separate Story/Multiverse. Thing is the MCU is a Universe in the Comic Multiverse with it's own designation and everything, though I think I know what they're doing here, that would keep this all working in the Pre-Established Lore. All the Events in MCU (Loki/Wandavision/What If/No Way Home/Multiverse of Madness) isn't creating a Multiverse, they're creating an Omniverse. Simply put the MCU Universe is becoming a Multiverse In A Multiverse, as a side note This would also explain how Ultron's Infinity Stones were working outside of what we thought was his Universe. He would technically still be in the MCU Universe but with it now piled on top of itself as a Multiverse, having Perfect Copies of The MCU's Infinity Stones in each Splinter Universe, allows him to use his in any place as they are the same thing.

Marvel comics made this cannon during the council of reeds because the implication of two people wielding duel stones. what happens when two people snap against each other? so its a rule they set down to prevent paradoxes. imagine what happened to supreme strange but the multiverse. o_0 I know MCU can do things different but the same problem applies. using stones in other universes only makes more questions during multiverse content they will want to avoid. Kang will be around for 10+ years of this stuff in the MCU. Now imagine multiple stone wielding kangs.

@@pfc_church going off of what I said in my comment on your reply on the other comment thread, this may be the jumping off point for them to clean it up. After the whole Ultron Thing is over they could find a way to set the Fractured Stones to not be able to exist in the same place at the same time. Achieving the Same Effect as in the Comics.

@@-libertyprimev1-902 I am sure they going to find a answer to what we just watched and i may even like the story. I honestly have been explain time travel in the same way are explain just a mcu multiverse so people understand the creation of the multiverse is the hub. I dont mind MCM marvel comics multiverse. My problem is with the concept that they did work. its bad writing. They clearly establishing stones control aspects of our universe and i would go as far as saying make the universe. how is the time stone supposed to effect another time stones space? MCU was going in the direction of them being useless for MCM content. and its the right decision. using the stones now on another universe opens way to many issues and the worst part is they did it in a show where I am supposed to be exited to see cpt becoming president. I loved that story but all i could was think about the god dam stones. so for a show for the fans they really hurt the fans. The stones not working in or on other universes is on the level of batmans parents dying uncle ben dying superman coming from another planet cyclops shooting energy from his eyes. If any of those things were changed you address it right away and nothing u do really hits with the gravity you want till you do. Imagine batman did that. he picked up his parents from the airport mid episode and dropped them off home then next thing he does is punch out super man. you dont give a shit about how he punched out superman wtf is going on with the parents. for fans that is what just happened and it hits us hard.

@@pfc_church towards the end it sounds like you're implying I'm not a fan, though i know that probably wasn't your intent, and I never agreed with how they are doing this. I just had idea on how it Could work and their Possible Direction to explain it later. That Batman thing would have people immediately assuming it's a new Universe like DCeased, but I get the intent of your point. But people wouldn't just call it bad, they'd speculate on where it's going, hell that actually happen in a semi recent story where Prime Batman was marrying Catwoman and Booster Gold thought it'd be a Good Wedding Gift to go back in time and stop his parents from dying, which absolutely screwed up a new branched timeline. (Also hate to be that guy but it was retconned a long time ago that Technically Cyclops doesn't shoot Energy out of his Eyes, it's Pure Concussive Force from a separate Dimension. 😂 Cause everything in Comics has to be complicated)

@@pfc_church and again I'll reiterate yes based off the Comics current explanations this would make no sense. What I'm saying is What If it does work because this is a Separate Multiverse happening In A Single Universe with Splintered Infinity Stones that are all part of the Same Stone and Universe. Also the Stones don't create the Universe, they are more the Pillars upon which everything Exists on. As well if we go off the Super Old Stories those Pillars were made by a Being which birth the Infinity Stones from his dying breathe of Loneliness.

Basically, my understanding is thus: - Stones don't work in the TVA because they are magic; magic itself doesn't work in the TVA. - Stones work anywhere where magic works, regardless of universe, multiverse, etc. This differs from the comics. Opposite this: they would fail anywhere magic fails.

Okay, there are some things in this episode that I need clarification on. 1. Isn’t Guardians 2 supposed to be set a year before Age of Ultron? Wouldn’t Ego have already been destroyed by the Guardians at that point? 2. Loki established that the Infinity Stones do not work outside of the realm of time & space. How is it that Ultron was able to use them to fight the Watcher, who exists outside of time & space? 3. Ultron was able to slice Thanos in half with the power of the Mind Stone easily. Can someone explain why Vision didn’t use this on Thanos or Corvus in Infinity War? 4. We see that Thanos had the Soul Stone in his possession. How does he have it? He didn’t know where it was until Gamora tells him & he needed Gamora to get it, but we see her with the Guardians on the planet of the Sovereign. Same with the Time Stone. How did he get it when it was on Earth with the Sorcerors? Also, why weren’t Asgard & Xandar wiped out by Thanos when both the Space & Power Stones were at those places? 5. Where were Pietro & Wanda during this? They were the only humans that Ultron was willing to let live. Entertaining episode but there are some continuity errors in this & things that go against established lore.

I was thinking the exact same thing in terms of the timeline not matching up! The only explanation I can come up with is that Thanos got into a battle with the sorcerers off-screen that involved the time stone messing with this universe's timeline so that Gamora and Ego are alive again, Thanos' death can maybe be chalked up to Ultron/Vision being more powerful than just Vision if Ultron kept working on making upgrades to himself? And in Loki it was only established that the infinity stones don't work in the TVA, not that they wouldn't work where The Watcher is. They're flimsy explanations at best, I know, but the only ones I can come up with lol.

    1. I guess we can say it’s been pushed forward in the timeline. 2. The TVA is technically outside of time and space plus it nullifies magic. It important to remember that only applies in the comics and MCU tends to take liberties with stuff like this. 3. Keep in mind(no pun intended) Vision in Infinity War was previously injured. Which is also why he didn’t phase. 4. I say his chair lol. In all seriousness it was probably Neubla since we never see her. Alternatively maybe the black order were the ones to retrieve the stone and they sacrificed one of themselves. 5. Good question maybe they too were wiped out for Ultron’s version of peace? Hope this helped.

Well Vision didn't do that to Thanos because he still was damaged by Corvus' spear which could harm in his intangible form. So Vision couldn't exactly do much while still injured and was in the process of having the mind stone removed. At that point, they couldn't risk him trying to fight Thanos and why he asked Wanda to destroy him
