Actually no, i started with joe satch, vai, then listened to Guthrie, Andy timmons, planet x, brett garsed, frank gambale.. i think Andy Timmons is great.. but i like marty's music the most.. then i gravitated towards classical - Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, Vivaldi, Paganini... lol, i have been coding for past 15 years, but today i revisited it again n i think i undesrtand marty better now, n his phrasing.. cause i have been listening classical a lot.. one thing i noticed - if i can sing the phrase, then i can play the phrase. I am not that talented, it took me long time to develop ears... n organically learn by listening. Now i dont play much but my playing has got much better , i dont need to look at tabs, i can now play ear.

This video introduced me to new concepts, i was aware of modes n it introduced me to phrygian dominant n then i learned hirajoshi, iwato, hungarian minor, double minor, nepolitan major n minor.. but after learning all these scale now i understand why marty says that he doesnt know any scale.. he knows scales but he doesnt care about them, because he knows he that he can use all the notes(12 of them).

Past so many years i made changes in my playing to sound more like marty.. which was painful.. i used to do that after my office hours... then tom grady channel solved my problem of economy picking, credit to tom grady n Yngwei.. once that problem was fixed and i understood economy, inside and outside picking, things became easy.. i also dont do runs, but create phrases like marty does. There was a video - 100 marty phrases , i also downloaded that n learned that... but the real fun is to improvise on the chord changes and write tasty phrases n lines as marty.. my lines are good but not as good as martys.

We used to have to buy the Star Lick videos and borrow a video machine to go with the TV that was always on the Fritz. Tab books were usually way off. Best way to learn back then was to stalk older players on the music scene and pester them to show you riffs and licks.

"The More you think, the better you play.." Most other guys have recommended that we stop thinking and play instinctively. However I must agree, I've always done my best playing when my brain was actively engaged in predicting what I want to play next. It's interesting how Marty solos primarily with 3 fingers and keeps his pinky curled-up high, as sort of rudder for his vibrato.

I've heard it explained like this: you are trying to emphasize the notes in the scale that correspond with the notes in the chord playing underneath at the time. For example, an E major chord contains three notes: E, G#, B. Thus, when that chord comes up, those are the three notes I would want to highlight rather than just noodling through the scale which is what many people do. If the song then changes to an A major chord which includes the notes A, C#, and E, I want to emphasize those notes and so on. You are just highlighting the notes in the scale that correspond with the notes that make up the underlying chord. It will make your playing more melodic. There are tricks (such as the CAGED system) that can help you visualize where the notes you need are on the fretboard.

What a brilliant person...he has thought everything through mathematically and can summon and execute the patterns he likes in the combinations he likes in relation to the movement of the harmony...and it sounds beautiful.

I've been playing (piano, guitar as a kid and now drums) off and on my whole life. I'm not great, but of all things in my life, in my opinion, the journey of learning to play music is one of the most unique and beautiful quests life has to offer. And to me, this the most awesome video on the internet about playing music. Thank you for putting it together and sharing!

I'm very far from even attempting a solo, but I love the way he explains the notes in relation to the chords. Seen him with Megadeth on the Countdown Tour. After the show, looked on the floor and found his pick. Still have it.

Not sure which has aged better, my friend, you or your talent. Keep thinking about food! God bless you. If I had purchased guitar lessons from you instead of from Reeves Gabrels back in the mid 1980s, I would be a professional musician by now. I'm a stone cutter and silversmith now and that's okay.
