Marty Balin sings “Hearts” Live at the Improv

Комедия

1981. My brother Richard Bassil, (RIP) is on bass. This song was a top ten hit.
Atlanta Lady, off the same album, was also in the top twenty that year. Both songs written by Jesse Barish.

The bass playing here really is rock solid. The pocket is CRAZY. Marty sounds excellent too. That guitar solo, on the other hand, is an unholy mess. Nothing about it works and it never should have been there. It's just noise. Great song that takes me back to my 8 year-old self.

I had to re-listen…I think it’s mixed too hot, but I kinda see your point..But it was a rock song post 70’s, so it was almost de riguer! When I played with these guys before my brother joined we opened for the Ramones in 77… we knew nothing about them except that we heard they “didn’t play any solos”! We thought we would destroy them because John here was such a good soloist! We were correct, in that regards, but the Ramones were a force of their own! 😜

Hi Jonathan. I am Anthony. I played with your brother and guitarist John DeCaro after that had left Marty's band. I am a drummer. I often wondered what happened to Rich and John. I am really sorry to hear that Rich passed. I played with them for a few years and we had a band called Total Stranger. We start playing all around the Philly Tri State area. I have a few cassettes of recordings that i made from live shows and studios we went to record at. The band was really good. I used to love to hang with your brother cause he was funny. I remember him hauling around his big bass rig that was on wheels and a cover that had Balin written on it in Red. I just came across this video and wanted to let you know i had the pleasure of knowing your brother.
