The thing that most people, even most people who knew and liked the Jefferson Airplane, never got was that THIS group were all intellectuals. All of them. But especially Marty Balin and Paul Kantner. These wren't just "rock musicians"; they were thoughtful philosophical individuals who were also musicians.

even by the late 1970s the DJs and people in the media made this band out to be all drugs and sex and impulsivity.. it was the stupid people in the media assigning their own traits onto people far more advanced than they were . now you basically have childish sociopaths being presented as artist

Marty balin just had that Powerful voice that just moves you with joy, heartache, and he just had that special talent that just had it all

RIP Marty...you will be missed. 💔

What a voice

He wanted to make money so he started a band... he wanted to play somewhere so built a club...he picked members of his band based on their aura.. how they looked...he drank and served LSD laced punch...Marty seemed to be someone who could magically make anything he wanted happen when he was young .. those times in San Francisco were like no other in America in terms of personal freedom and creativity and limitless possibilities without the crippling cost of insurance or legal ramifications

Marty, I will always miss you. You were so amazing and talented. I am grateful for your recordings and I can hear you sing anytime I want to. Bless you for all you gave to mankind.

Marty seemed so kind and caring. Very intelligent. Very sweet. Miss his gorgeous voice. A very down to earth man!

Thank you for leaving us with such wonderful music Marty, Rest Easy.

So devastatingly sexy. On that note, we need to cast Michael Fassbender for the Marty Balin biopic. Balin lives!

Well he is damn hot, here and everywhere else during this period. And his first solo album is quite good, two songs particularly I love A LOT!

How is it apparent he CAN actually feel someone’s aura? The meeting with creepy Phil Spector! I LOVE that Balin wasn’t afraid to say he wasn’t impressed.

He singled out Paul Kantner at a club. Kantner had just played a few chords, and then bailed, out of embarrassment. Balin went right up to Kantner and said he wanted to play with him. He had some very deep knowledge that THIS was they guy. He knew it. Someone else who did this was Federico Fellini. Fellini happened upon Tullio Pinelli, who he knew was a playwright, but didn't know personally, and said "Will you be an actor in my films?" The guy said, "I'm not an actor; I'm a playwright." "No," Fellini said, "You are a clown, you just don't know it." Later when the guy had fallen on hard times he went back to Fellini, and became a regular actor in his films, and had a very full acting career. Balin picked out one of their first drummers, just on his vibes. The guy said, "I'm not a drummer; I'm a guitarist." And Balin gave him some sticks and said "Go home and practice." I think that guy ended up as the drummer in Moby Grape. This level of magic and synchronicity and attunement is something that fueled the Sixties that is hard to explain to anyone who wasn't there. I wish we could find that again.

This was a good man. I interviewed Mary back in 2003. Open book. Had alot of great stories...especially Altamont. Pry one of my most favorite out of the hundred or so interviews I've ever conducted (radio).

I remember seeing the Airplane in later 1967. They were my all-time fave rave band (I’d purchased Takes Off in ‘66, then Surrealistic Pillow in ‘67) and I thought they could do no wrong (oh, those naive days!). How Marty & Grace could blend and trade off on stage amazed me. Later on, however, it seemed Marty sorta got lost among them. Sad, really because he was such a talented singer and true leader. I would play Young Girl Sunday Blues and later on, If You Feel over and over. Naturally Grace was incredible but Marty was too.

He sang on so many great ballads up until the early 80's (miracles, runaway, count on me, with your love, atlanta lady, hearts etc) then he just sorta vanished, should have been a bigger solo star

One of my first albums: Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. Marty was my hero. 3/5 of a Mile in Ten Seconds.

"Takes Off" is such a great recording and stands up very well after all these years. Dare I say I dug Signe much more than Grace.

Great interview. Marty Balin is a great case in his answer to the question: "So what was happening then in San Francisco?...& why were people Dancing?" And as a musician, he knew by Playing. An impressive, edgy voice for the time he so accurately described; Like in "Caroline", and "St. Charles". There's a presence to his interpretation of time that comes out most appealingly in this video.

An amazing artist ...its interesting that his club was called the Matrix.

I have definitely heard a different story about the name Jefferson Airplane LOL. "Jefferson airplane" is a slang term for a used paper match split open to hold a marijuana joint that has been smoked too short to hold without burning the hands -- an improvised roach clip.

845callaway, be honest: Sf has a bum culture and has had one since the 18th Century The problem is that it still has one and it has really gotten way, way out of hand. I was at the Petersen Museum and looking to ride the bus back to my hotel....at a nearby restaurant there were homeless people (trying to) selling junk on three sides of the restaurant.

I liked Marty with a half pint in his pocket and an attitude with the Airplane. The Vegas lounge act - not so much.

its interesting that at 4:29 Marty says alot of drug companies were creating mind altering drugs and giving them away at concerts..for free. Companies like JOhnson & Johnson ('baby powder'), we know Agent Orange was created by Monsanto and Dow Chemical. So the Drug test bed were young collegians/high school age kids. RIP Marty , i'll sing 'Miracles' and 'Hearts' or 'Runaway' at Mr Peabodies or El Azteca Lounge Karoake next wk.

I took a tour of a "major pharmaceutical facility" in the 1960's. Took the tour like it was a bakery. After we were done, our "guide" gave us what looked like a book. It was a salesman's sample case, 50 LSD tabs......

this was in 1984 interviewing just got way worse since then.. this is the way an interview should be where the interviewer is not even seen so they can't hijack the interview to be all about them and instead it's about the person being interviewed
