    When Venus hits a good shot all you hear is crickets from Mary Carillo but Martina hits a good shot she's practically jumping out of her chair saying "excellent stuff" or "that's unbelievable". How can a commentator get away with being so biased.

    @@shihlin1 She never liked the Williams sisters at first. They burst onto the scene and started beating her favorites (hingis, seles etc). A lot of people didn't like them because of that, when they entered the WTA they took over basically and people didn't like their favorites getting beaten.

    Agreed, I think strongly that her level dropped after 99 which enabled or at least made it easier for the others to take over. She should have worked on the serve and on the fitness and she would have won a lot despite the Williams who from 04 to 08 were not consistent

    Hingis was an amazing champ at 5'7" in height. Had Hingis been a 5'9" or 5'10" tennis player, she might of had a better physical outlook to win slams after tough matches. Physicality does help the athlete's mental strength. Just ask Sabatini. Her improved physical fitness helped her serve tremendously. It was as it was. The world was very lucky to have so many champions in Women's tennis in the 90s. Hingis was such an amazing player to utilize all that she had.

  • @michaellee888

    @michaellee888

    In Women's tennis, height is more of a liability compared to Men's tennis; however, whether Women's or Men's, the physicality toll is enormous. Unlike team sports, there is no break time in tennis, boxing, skating, etc. Any advantage that an athlete can have the better. I'm sure Henin would love to be 5'8" or 5'9" or 5'10". There are very successful players of all heights, but an advantage is an advantage. Arthur Ashe snubbed the ability of players to win Wimbledon if their height was under 6'0", but guess what, Andre Agassi won Wimbledon at 5'10"! And look at how many tall players not winning a slam. What am I trying to say? All I am saying is that had that player with all that talent been given more physical gifts, life might had been easier. Like Roger Federer, and Rafa Nadal. Novak had to work very hard on his physicality to finally win consistently. Remember when Novak had a tendency to retire from matches? Novak may still retire, but less often and more wins. Had Henin been 5'9", she might have won multiple Wimbledon titles. Instead, Henin never won Wimbledon. Conversely, Hingis never won the French. Hingis won the French as a junior in singles. Hingis won the French in doubles. I guess that's life? Like in Wonder Woman, "You expect the battle to fair, the battle will never be fair."

  • @YDVDNVRR

    @YDVDNVRR

    4 жыл бұрын

    Michael Lee I can see ur point. But Henin could’ve won Wimbledon with that height, she didn’t win it because of her height but because of Mauresmo. The same for Hingis in RG with Majoli. On the paper, Henin and Hingis were superior tennis players to Amelie and Iva.

  • @michaellee888

    @michaellee888

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not to make excuses, Hingis did suffer an injury prior to her French Open loss to Majoli. Hingis fell from her horse during her horse riding. Henin didn't get enough cheap points or easy points. Henin usually have to work hard to win her points like Hingis. Hingis in 1997 was a surprise to everyone. Once everyone knew her game, Hingis had to work harder. No matter how hard one can work, that athlete cannot make up that extra inch in height. Even with an extra long racket, that takes a toll. Longer racket, even light ones, have heavier swing weights. To conclude, it's stamina. That's why Nadal won many slams, he can play all day and do not tire. Nadal won 12 French Open Singles Titles; four of them were consecutive. "Rafael Nadal, who has won an all-time record twelve French Open titles. Nadal won four consecutive titles from 2005 - 2008 and an open era record of five consecutive titles from 2010 - 2014." Hingis and Henin at 5'9" or 5"10" might had been stronger athletes. Amanda Coetzer defeated Graf four times, but has not won a slam. Amanda is 5'2", a successful player, but no slam victories. Amanda almost became a slam winner, but was runner up at the US Open in doubles. Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated Amanda in doubles. Arantxa Sánchez Vicario is 5'6 1/2". Simona Halep won Wimbledon at 5'5", but Justine was 5'6". How could that happen? Luck of the draw and playing against Serena at her twilight of her career compared to her peak. Women's tennis, there's a chance for every height, but to put the odds more on the player's favor, the more attributes to win the better. The depth of Women's tennis was probably at the deepest yet during the Hingis, Henin, and Williams era.

    Para mí Hingis fué la mejor de ésa camada, yo creo que las lesiones y su vida privada no le permitieron mantenerse competitiva por más tiempo. Los que dicen que la Serena actual es superior a la Serena que enfrentó Hingis están equivocados, Serena tiene más experiencia ahora pero su físico está muy lejos de estar bien, es más, no me explico cómo pudo ganar los últimos cinco slams dónde se la veía gorda y lenta, yo creo que no enfrentó jugadoras de nivel, el nivel wta en los últimos diez años está pésimo.

Both are so amazing, and you have to work so hard to beat one, to have enough left to beat the other right after is nearly impossible. And even when you do beat both sometimes that takes too much out of you to win the next match if there is one, like Hingis beating both at the 2001 Australian but then falling to Capriati in the final in easy straight sets.

    Venus looked really stiff here and was putting absolutely no leg into her shots, especially on her serve and forehand. And her serve got progressively worse throughout the match (it was really painful to watch that shot completely abandon her). What a difference a year later though.

    She should’ve played a short game. All her shots are deep pounding ground strokes which require a lot of energy. There’s no slices or kill shots at the net. You need to mix it up and keep your opponent off balance

    Interesting thought! She lost this 99 USO final to Serena. She immediately reached AO final after this, being 3 time defending champion, and she lost to Davenport, and also lost 2001 and 2002 AO finals, both to Capriati. In the last one she even had more than one championship point. Good for her she at least took the 2000 WTA Finals in an incredible match against Seles, she was better at the end. But yeah, sad she couldn’t complete the big tournaments, losing her last 6 Major finals back to back

    @@valentinodelpiero4861 i wonder why is that so? Considering her 1997 domination. I thought she would've found her way to win but then, she lost her mental toughness during those lost finals. Maybe her opponents wanted it more.

    @@julrenharl Hingis was brilliant in 1997 but there's no question that it was a strange year for the women's tour. Graf was seriously compromised by injury for most of it, Seles started really struggling with her weight and confidence, plus the best of the rest (Sanchez Vicario and Martinez) also really started struggling with form, fitness and other issues. Davenport also hadn't started her fitness regime that would transform her game. Novotna was excellent for parts of the year and could test Hingis, but not consistently enough. It was a perfect storm for Hingis to dominate but it couldn't last.

    Hingis is the best net and volley player in the WTA, so why did she spend most of her time at the baseline where she is weak??? She would have won at last 12 more slams.

    But then Hingis came up against Serena and it was lights out! Serena had more shot selections movement and power than Venus which is why she was the more dominant player over everyone not just her sister! Serena could win game after game with aces, hitting all corners and up the middle repeatedly!

    This match really marks the beginning of the end of Hingis's reign over women's tennis. Even tho Martina won, Venus was just one of the women who were about to overtake her with pure power. In the final as Serena was about to win the title, you can see how visibly upset Venus was, that she was not the first Williams sister to win a grand slam title. On every other occasion she was always happy for Serena. Not at this U.S. Open. You can almost feel the pain Venus was experiencing. This would be the only time I've seen Venus visibly upset.

    Martina stupidly got involved in a war of words with Richard Williams, who was always prone to mouthing off. The sisters weren't likely to side against their father and it all spiralled from there. Players should stay away from that nonsense. Tennis isn't boxing where talking bollocks is expected.
