If I remember correctly, ten Hag gave basically the same criticism of Wan-Bissaka this time a year ago. He said he's not at the level mentally or physically, which I don't take to mean 'has mental health issues'... I take it to mean head is not in the game, not comprehending the footballing principles, etc. Both are/were players who look to have poor football IQ, but Wan-Bissaka has really come on leaps and bounds. He has an honesty and integrity about him that I'm not sure Sancho has.

Ten Hag was asked a question and he answered it truthfully. Jim conveniently omits that. It would have been worse if he had lied. They forgot that when Ragnick was there, and was asked why Lingaard wasn't in the side, he said Lingard was sick. And Lingard posted in social media that it was a lie. What was Ten Hag to do when asked about Sancho? He would have been crucified if he lied too.

  • @CagedPaps

There is the political answer though, which as we know from politicians doesn't mean lying but it also doesn't mean the truth. With the problems united have with various players and the way the media is looking at them - I think he could have answered without it boiling down to "he's lazy in training". He could have handled it like Arteta did for Gabriel. Very suspicious he didn't start this season considering how many he played last season - he simply said he will play a lot of games and it was tactical. If ETH had replied saying 'Sancho is still in the mix, I just picked the best squad for this game. He'll be back...' That's not lying but it also doesn't label players lazy in public. It turned it into an issue we're still speaking about. I'm all for honesty in press conferences - I think ours are terrible for that reason. But it's honest to say they won't be playing this weekend. Whichever way you look at it, it's another player ETH has had a public spat with. The first time - maybe it's the player, eventually eyes will start to focus on ETH.

@@CagedPapsBy the accounts that are coming out since this spat, Ten Haag had been having problems with Sancho's time keeping since he came last year. So much so he was told to get to the training complex an hour before everyone else has to show up. And it seems Sancho had knuckled down at first and was showing up on time but went back to his old ways again. And then he was sent to Holland because his fitness wasn't UpTo par and they said there were mental health issues as well. We all have seen how much the club/ manager/players as well as fans all rallied around him and wanted him to do so well. So ultimately my point is Sancho's professionalism has been called into question multiple times since his time at Mancity's academy and I think Ten Haag believes he has done evthg he can to help him in private and airing this in public was probably the last straw to see if he responds to the criticism and changes his ways. But Sancho has decided to double down on his belief and we all know who is going to win the war between Manager and player.

He's done nothing since he has been here and wouldn't mind selling him in January! But all Sancho has to do is hold his hands up, admit that ETH has done a lot for him, knuckle down, put in the effort and make sure that he is undeniable so ETH has to pick him on match day. Miss the days where a manager would call out a player and it being called "tough love" and the player wouldn't moan or make a statement. They would show the manager exactly just how good they are! Rooney would of done that back in the day, Giggs, Rio, Gerrard, Lampard ect. You call them out and they'll have a worldie the next week The footballers these days are so soft! Ten Hag's comment (when he was asked a question) was very mild and straightforward and fair. What was Ten Hag supposed to say? No comment? or pretend Sancho wasn't fully fit? or say he wasn't considered good enough to make the squad? - which is basically what he said anyway. Sancho's response, to go publicly tweeting to defend himself was totally childish and ridiculous. I'm sure Ten Hag was perplexed and shocked and wondering "what on earth is wrong with this guy?" It's so obvious that writing a public comment directed at your manager is simply something that shouldn't even come into consideration for a player to do. SOOOOOOOOO OBVIOUSSSSS!!!! - unless the comment is in praise of your manager, maybe. Players are supposed to bring solutions for managers, not create problems.

So glad Keown mentioned it since other pundits seem to have amnesia. Ten Haag gave that boy Sancho so much love last season. He sent him away from months when we already had other issues with the squad. He gave him game time upon his return and at no point did we even attempt to sell him during the off-season window. I wish Jadon had taken a few minutes to think about everything before putting out that tweet. With just a few paragraphs, he may have ruined his career. He's 23! Before you criticize Ten Haag for calling Sancho out publicly, he tried the arm around the shoulder. I'm sure he felt that he had no choice when he was asked that question. For anyone who has ever had to look after/mentor/train someone or be a supervisor, I'm sure you've had a case where the person under needed some tough love cause sometimes that's the only way to knock someone into shape. But ultimately it's on the individual to take that and use it to be better. Sancho has chosen not to and I'm tired of some pundits and even fans excusing the player's lack of accountability here. It's this acceptance of mediocrity that has contributed to United's malaise and I'm glad our manager has said enough is enough.

The modern footballer is mostly a runner, an industry machine & looking at Sancho he looks like he has the body of a 30 y Silva & Grealish are prime example of technical player who have tremendous industry, which make them unplayable. I do not understand the criticism of Ten Hag for simply doing what every manager does in picking his team for the coming matches. If Sancho was showing his worth in training, surely he'd be picked to play. He hasn't, so he's sidelined. The fact Sancho isn't happy about that is of no concern to anybody but himself, in which case he has to look at himself and address what the problem is. We as football fans see the frustrating lack of the talent we have seen from him at Dortmund and that's the real issue here. He's not effective in games and if he's not effective in training, he doesn't play. Just because the manager answered a question honestly does not make him the bad guy here. it's VERY rare I agree with Martin Keown but he is 100% correct on this one - Erik has wrapped Jadon in cotton wool, looked out for him and now he's being repaid with petulance. You had your chance Jadon, you blew it.
