Martin Bashir interviews Michael Barrymore.

Why did it take an hour before the police was called?
Michael Barrymore called his PA Mike Browne after he was promoted to do so by his friends Simon Shaw and James Futers, once they arrived at the flat they had walked to, with a bundle of materials he was holding

They'll never crack unless the police threaten them all with murder which they should have done from day one. Murder and perverting the cause of justice. Barrymore is a lying, pathetic manchild who will never tell the truth because he craves his freedom and desperate fame. If he had any integrity and remorse he would have told the truth by now but now poor Terry Lubbock has gone to his grave the scumbags who killed Stuart and the incompetent paid off police will let this horrendous crime fade forever.

He was probably completely off his head, as were they all and it was a big house so it's likely he doesn't know what happened. However he may have supplied drugs to them all and doesn't want to incriminate himself about that due to the drugs laws. I think that's why he is somewhat evasive. I don't think anyone was intentionally murdered and all were probably voluntarily partaking in drugs. Why else would they have gone back there? So I think it's time to move on. Everyone was off their heads and their was a terrible accident with water involved. Water and substances don't mix.

One, or maybe more of them did it to that lad, we all know it, and whether Barrymore had anything physical to do with his death or not, I think there’s more he knows. Kenney had a history of violent incidents before this anyway, he was reportedly jealous of Barrymore meeting Lubbock that night, it doesn’t take Inspector Morse to focus attention on him. Others like Merritt, Futers, Shaw and company are all gonna have suspicion to their names as well.

And he really fucked up in this interview he repeatedly has claimed he doesn't know what happened but says here he wasn't so out of it that he didn't know what was going on in his house! He definitely knows more than he's letting on I think one of the guests has some serious dirt on him and he and his guests all agreed on what they'd tell the police before any 999 calls were made.

I'm afraid Barrymore was his own worst enemy . Fame and money fuelled his desire to explore his sexuality with no boundaries . Whether or not he was directly involved in the death itself , his fleeing the scene , and his apparent lack of empathy for the man dying in his home , is utterly disgraceful . He should never ever be allowed back on our screens again . No amount of investigation will bring the dead man back . But Barrymore , who's life was based upon his fame , will forever be in the shadows desperately trying to win favour . This will be his punishment . His last year's in exile . Always a suspect in a needless death .

Sequence he describes is: 1. Barrymore sees Lubbock walking toward jacuzzi (2. Narrator then says (I guess based on other evidence) that Lubbock, Kenney and Merrit were in jacuzzi, then Futers sees Lubbock "swimming in the pool." 3. Barrymore says he was in house having a smoke, and they asked him to "give it a go" (i.e. the jacuzzi) (though according to the sequence they'd already been in it so why are they now "giving it a go?" In this chronology they get out of jacuzzi then ask him if they can go in jacuzzi. 4. Barrymore gives them shorts to put on (again, I thought they'd already been in there?). 5. Barrymore goes outside but notes "the other people were back in the house" (implying they had indeed previously been outside in the jacuzzi just as narrator said - but if so, why were they asking to try it and only now getting their shorts on?). 6. Barrymore says he looked down at "what was effectively the deep end" (odd way to say it - was it or was it not the deep end?!) and saw Lubbock. When asked if he recognized Lubbock he hesitates then initially says no but then seemingly completely changes his mind and says yes but gives a non-sequitur answer as if repeating something by rote ("he was face up"). 7. He runs back in to get Kenney who has lifesaving abilities. While it's not impossible Kenney was still in house, the impression of the events so far was they were all heading out together to the jacuzzi. It seems to me clear that Kenney (perhaps with Merrit and Fuentes) assaulted Lubbock, which led to his death. They put him in the pool and Feuntes agreed to say he'd seen him swimming alone. They then came in and told Barrymore (or Barrymore head the furor and came out). I suspect the request to switch on the jacuzzi and get some shorts came much earlier and did not involve Barrymoe coming to find the body at this point. Rather, I think Lubbock died, then Merrit and Kenney cam back in the house. Perhaps they did then pretend they'd never been in jacuzzi as way of getting Barrymore out there to "find" the body; or perhaps Barrymore well knew what had gone on (as others have noted it's not actually a big house) and just came out to witness the furor. As an aside Bashir is slimy. While he rightly pushes Barrymore on some things, he belabors the point about the irresponsibility - the only thing that Barrymore actually candidly admits to (and ironic given Bashir's own irresponsible journalism)

Michael's story is different everytime he tells it although consistently been drinking each time. Michael went as to far to suggest that Stuart's injuries were caused when he was in the mortuary. I worked as a forensic Pathology consultant for years in Europe and UK and there is no way it is possible as the body bags have seals which were still in tact when the first post mortem started and secondly a person will not bruise, lacerate and haemorrhage after death so those injuries were caused before death or during death. As well as the compression to the neck which there is no valid explanation for that occurring.

I was more than happy to oblige. Then he asked to swap back I was less enthused this time but it’s Sir Michael Barrymore so I again obliged. This went on for 42 minutes. When we finally pulled into the Old Warrick Road. I asked him “what was all that bleeding musical chairs about?” He looked at me for a minute or so and said finally and sadly as he disembarked. “ ‘Ave you ever farted so much you bruised your stink wrinkle? Instead he keeps a low profile, just constantly protests he is 100% innocent and has not seen anything that indicates Stuart was murdered. Saying that you never saw anything and you were sonewhere else is the the easiest cop out. Why would he not assist the Essex Police more than he did to find out which of his guests were responsible, so in the process clearing himself? i don't believe his accounts. They are all contradictory and there is an indication of lying by omission.

@@justice4stuartlubbock805 thanks. I have watched every interview there has been with Barrymore; I find them fascinating as it is so obvious he knows more than he’s letting on. I have just listened to the Ed Opperman interview with Anthony Bennett. Listening to this made my blood boil! Everyone at the house is clearly covering for everyone else. And the idea of a biased pathologist! Given the recent arrest I really hope there is now justice for Stuart.

It's easy to forget Barrymore was probably the most important star on '90s TV. Think Graham Norton meets Michael McIntyre meets Jonathan Ross. I daresay he knew his star might descend a little in the '00s as his act might seem a little dated and he becomes more the "lovable old guy". I think it says good things about his character that he doesn't seem bitter that this death ruined his career entirely.

@ Steve Christie Barrymore has never stopped complaining about how this killed his career in the last 20 years since it happened! He's tried to sue the police for millions over it never mind a man died in his home under suspicious circumstances and the family have never got any answers or closure all Barrymore cares about is keeping himself out of prison and restarting his career. Its so blatantly obvious he knows more than he's letting on I reckon those involved have some dirt on him that he doesn't want getting out and they all agreed on what story to tell the police before 999 was even dialled.

We all know Mr. B lied. And is lying here. But if we didn't...here are (just) 2 pointers he was...(&) is. 07:08 - Contradicts himself in 2 beats - "We were there for a while"...then a second later..."not that long." 07:44 - Oohed and ahhed for 3-4 seconds when asked if he recognised Stuart's body. Then hinted he wasn't sure...(almost as if he'd had to deduce it was Stuart.) Few moments later, Barrymore's saying Stuart was face up. ✋🏼 I'm no 👨🏻‍🔬 or 👮🏻‍♂️ or 🕵🏻. However...I'd have thought if u spotted a body that was FACE UP...u'd pretty much know, str8 away...which one of the other 8 guests it was. (Esp. since u say u WEREN'T so drunk or high u didn't not know what was going on.) Insp Colombo would have said... FACT 1: A face-up body | FACT 2: So u can c who it is, right off the 🏏 | FACT 3: Yet wen asked if u recognised Stuart...u have 2 think about wether u did or didn't. 🤷🏼‍♂️...(To me)...that seems like some1 who's quickly & mentally trying 2 ascertain WHICH ansa 2 give to the question. If telling the truth...u'd be able 2 ansa in a nanosecond whether u'd recognised Stuart str8 away, or not.

We were there for a while VS not that long. Barrymore is acutely aware of saying we were there for a while and quickly corrects himself to not that long. He is anticipating being asked why were use there for a while what were use doing. Barrymore then says we AGREED to go to the jacuzzi to have a go. To agree to something they must have debated it. While Barrymore is talking his brain knows what happened. I think this is when they were getting their story together. Stuart was dead at this point and they knew it. Barrymore was the one to do the “discovery” the lifeguard was to pull the body out and the other one called the police. Shared responsibility. Now let’s get onto the “discovery” and the narrative of the drowning. Barrymore needs to persuade the audience there was a drowning instead of just saying what happened. The need to persuade underlies the weakness in his statement. Barrymore done the “discovery” seen Stuart in the Deep End and then was Shocked (The emotion in the correct place of the story-- artificially placed) then the need to tell the audience he Ran back in wanting the audience to know he was in Emergency mode ( which suggests he wasn’t) to get the Life Guard ! It’s a silly story a child would come up with. Hopefully Stuart gets Justice.

Barrymore is inherently a good person.. this is the reason for his depression over this whole case.. in my unprofessional opinion he is so down and withdrawn over it all, that it shows in all his interviews, I get the feeling he is really depressed about what happened, wouldn’t you agree?? Now the thing is, if you see a dead body, or a friend or even family member dies, you get over it.. most people would be able to convince themselves it wasn’t your fault.. Barrymore tells us it wasn’t his fault.. If you are a good person that takes drugs and drinks heavily and is out of control and something like this happened, that’s when you would suffer such a deep depression!! He isn’t defending himself in the way an innocent man would defend himself.. Barrymore knows what happened, but he can’t go back on what he has said!! He can not even entertain the idea of spending the rest of his life in prison!! I feel sorry for him in a way, but he is not being honest, of that I am sure!!

Michael said he hadn’t taken any drugs that day or evening , then he says he had “ smoke with a couple of the lads “ , at 12.24 you notice he becomes uncomfortable when bashir mentions about 2 different descriptions of what happened that night, his body language totally changes , he seems quite anxious about what Justin Merritt and whoever else has said, his eyes change too at that moment . Always said he knows ALOT more , but he’s been told to zip it .
