Hey, 2022 visitors! This video is relevant again but with a few minor changes! • The dates are slightly offset from when I made that in 2020: this year’s closest approach is on December 1st, and opposition on December 8th. This is because Earth and Mars’s orbits aren’t quite synced up time-wise, as you’ll see in the video! • Also, because we’ve gone one further along in the sequence of oppositions, Mars is a bit dimmer this year and will actually be this bright again in 2033. I can attest though, it is still WELL BRIGHT. (That’s the astronomical technical term.) • Finally, at the end I say Mars will be in the west in the late evening, which of course it won't-it will be in the east, obviously, as Mars is _opposite_ the sun in the sky (hence ‘opposition’!). In my defence both me and my other half who was filming were VERY COLD by this point!!

MARS has been great to observe for several months now. Even with naked-eye. We've had an extraordinary year for ASTRONOMY! Comet Neowise was stunning.

...and the launch window would have closed for 15 years, desperately leaving Atlas V-541 and its payload on Earth ground... I confirm : even when looking towards the south-west by mistake, Mars itself reminds you that it is in the south-east :) Cheers from France Andrew ! And thanks for this channel content. @@DrAndrewSteele My personal experience of cold evenings - should say nights - (mistral at 700m altitude at the Puimichel observatory in the Alpes de Haute-Provence in early April🥶) makes me say that about 25 cups of very hot tea makes any compass optional 👍!

@@DrAndrewSteele ...then they replaced the tea in my thermos with hot wine with citrus fruits and cinnamon and laughed a lot... It was in 1989, a few years after the site was created. The digital was not there yet and we still used the film for astrophotography. Amateurs and professionals come from everywhere. It's an awsome place. It has evolved a lot since that time. If the opportunity arises, do not hesitate to go and see their work (polishing mirrors, observation instruments...)

I knew it I was so scared at first because I thought it was something else but now that I realized it’s just Mars so I’m not so scared anymore

I’m right now in UAE and mars was visible but if I’m correct mars looked like a little star near the moon, I realized because of my telescope my telescope isn’t the best but I saw red glowing stuff around it and that’s how I knew it was mars

I new looking up it was Mars was to bright to be any regular star thank you brought a smile to my face and I'm going through a very rough time in my life that will be something to look up at and say ur looking at Mars with ur own eyes it cant be all that far 😬😬😬🔥👊👊👊

Because people love play video games more that looking at the dots in the sky. It is not really interesting for somebody that doesn't know what they are and why they act like that

I'm just doing the subtitles for this and I noticed a mistake in the video! At the end I say Mars will be in the south-_west_ in the late evening, which of course it won't-it will be in the south-east, because it rose in the east shortly before. Dammit! It's so bright it should be pretty easy to spot in any case!

@The Rivers Edge Yes! I think the difference from one night to the next might be hard to make out with the naked eye…but worth it just to say you've seen it!! Looking at the clouds here, I don't think I'm going to get that option…

I didn’t see Mars but I think I saw Saturn because I saw this white star in the sky but When I took a picture in my iPad and reduce the light and stuff I saw rocky asteroids and a large Saturn :D

It was Venus! It's the only thing brighter than Mars in the sky at the moment though, so easily confused. :) Mars is on the opposite site of the sky to the sun-so west in the early morning-while the moon and Venus are on the same side, visible in the east just before sunrise. Good luck spotting Mars if you take a look!

Incredibly precise measurements of the position of the planets in the Solar System, plus detailed computer models. We can predict the positions of planets thousands, perhaps even millions of years into the future! Watch out for another video on this topic very soon… :)

Plot point 1 mars dope. 2. Aliens are good characters. 3. Only Problem like long distances.. they are long… but speed of light is a problem…. Takes awhile… yawn. 4.Make it like Star Wars and Babylon 5 had a war with Star Trek and Star Trek had KHan.. 6.the special effects would need to slap like those ribs. 7. Someone is going to seriously over analyze this 🤪 the future humans will look at our data nod heads and agree LOL better destroyed than known the history of MAN.. and they will forget this planet eventually… everything is forgotten, while remembering is great, discovery is always more excited; never lose the curiosity in life it doesn’t end here it’s a network of unknown; when ideas and emotions combined with delusions of self grandeur become nothing more than a mechanism fired off by situational conditions and receptiveness behavior to the normal of whatever it might be… we all have this idea of who weed should be what we are and sometimes it’s delusions or destroyed from believing in themselves…. Dude he just explained why we suddenly had a orange dot in the sky by scientific facts. If you have a better expalation for that orange dot, i would be glad to hear and also ypu must explain why it gets dimer and dissapears and comes back 1 year later and also must explain why it is brighter that 2 years later and why it will be dimer after that
