Married life and menstruation - Advice of an ultra-orthodox rabbi and his wife

Ойын-сауық

Dating and matchmaking in the "Haredi" (ultra-orthodox Jewish) world has always been mysterious and intriguingly different from the secular world. At a time when the institution of marriage in the modern secular world is about to go bankrupt - increasing divorce rates, infidelity, the trend of extended bachelorhood, single parenting, etc. - the question arises: where are we going wrong? And what is it about Haredi relationships that keeps them strong and stable? How does it work?

If that story about the experiment with the rats is true....they died because human blood is not compatible with animal blood. Just like some people with certain blood types can't receive transfusions from people with certain blood types. Menstrual blood is not dangerous.

I agree is absolute rubbish. The best reason to explain why you cant have sex during menstruation is that, as there is a bleed it means there has been a “death”. And you stay away from death as you strive to live. Thats one explanation. The fact that its the WORST DEFILEMENT on earth is absolute RUBBISH! Its ant woman to say that and its just pathetic. And not true. Mensrutation is just the release of bloody from a uterus, that was preparing for a fertilised egg to implant. If it was SO POISONOUS the woman would die. That is such bullshit. I cant believe she said that and that is believed. Its blood. Nothing more. Nothing less. With contents of the uterus which has shed away as implantation hasn’t occurred. That woman is talking shit! Drisgraceful and an insult.

As a Jewish woman I detest that stone age mentality, about something that is completely natural as menstruation. I will never take that on board. The very fact that a woman can menstruate means that she is conversely able to give life, the most beautiful thing there is.

I agree. Its absolute Bullshit and this should be reported and removed. I have reported it. But its a lie. Its dangerous. Its discriminatory to woman of any faith. And if we injected rat blood into ourselves we would most probably die as well. And to say its the most vile of vile things to happen to a woman is just beyond me. How can it be okay one minute and then toxic and poisonous the next. Its absolute rubbish! She doesnt know what she is saying. She needs to be educated about the real reason about abstaining during menstruation. And its nothing to do with it being dirty. Thats comment is moronic.

As a Jewish woman, let me assure viewers there are MANY types of Orthodox Jews, with a variety of views. The thing about being a Jew: we debate, we argue, we question everything--as the saying goes, "Two Jews, three opinions!" What this woman said to the bride is just one woman's opinion--I have no idea how she arrived at this conclusion? I have NEVER heard such a poisonously negative view of menstruation from any other Jewish woman. The rat story is, um, how you say? B.S. 😉! Oy! 🙄

I find this interesting as Muslim because it’s not too different from the Islamic rulings when it comes to menstruation. In Islam sexual intercourse is absolutely forbidden during the cycle, but husband and wife can still be intimate with each other. Women also need to do a ritual cleansing when they are done before she can go back to praying the 5 daily prayers (same as the ritual cleansing that both men and women have to do after sexual activity). And it is considered menstruation up to 10 days, after 10 days it’s no longer considered menstruation blood. There’s a lot of commonality between the two religions.

It is the only tumah that can be undone nowadays , because the tumah from a dead body is extremely catching. Tumah does not mean unclean or even impure. It's just that there are certain things that you can only do when you're tahor, if you're not you're in a state of tumah, called tamaih. Those in positions of power know it’s a lie, but it’s a calculated one: They know that a woman is most fertile about 12-15 days after her period starts. So, by telling couples they can’t have sex during her cycle, which is about five days, and then adding on an additional 7 days after to ensure “cleanliness”, it means when the couple do have sex, it’s at her fertile time. This, obviously, produces more children, which is viewed as a blessing and reinforces the idea that blessings come from keeping the law and traditions. At at the same time, it increases the group population and strength and makes it more difficult for the couple to leave the community. But, they can’t or won’t say this because knowledge of reproductive function can lead to family planning, which would then empower the individual at the stake of the greater community.

Not only it is the woman's when ovulation occurs, the timing also slightly increases the chance if conception occurs, it will more liekly be a male, due to the differences between male Y carrying sperm and the female x carrying sperm. And the refraining from intercourse also has a boost for the male fertility as well, so again when the couple resumes intercourse, conception occurs. That being said, the inital commandment is straight from the Torah and very clear. However, all the explanations and all the rituals dos and don'ts HAVE been taught by rabbis and men from that commandment and long before science knew all of these things.

What's funny is that adult women in these places are praised for having children but they are disrespected for being able to have them, meaning that they have a period. To say that periods are the greatest defilement on earth, that means that you must not treasure life as every mammal that delivers has a monthly, like humans. We are not birds, we don't lay eggs. What about people who unalive, people who grape, people who touch children? Are none of them the greatest defilement? What's makes this worse is that it is always another woman who says these things. Never trust the female that wrongfully goes against her own gender. Edit: I'm not saying that humans are literally animals btw.

It only seems like this at first glance. The earth was cursed as well as every living thing on it after Adam and Eve eating from the forbidden fruit. The curse on women was the process of pregnancy, the pain of birthgiving, and menstruation. The ability itself to have children is God’s greatest blessing, God wanted humans to be able to have this before it falling into sin. However the process of pregnancy and menstruation is one of the greatest curses on earth also. Having all these regulations are painful, but if you see the full picture, the whole cause if you will, becouse the bible gives concrete reasons for them, you start to realize how amazing these are and how amazing God is. Im not jewish, but i have read the bible during the pandemic. I can truely recomend it for everyone. Wish you the bests!

Someone else explained it in a different comment. Defilement isn’t a great word for it. Maybe it doesn’t translate well. Ritually unclean is better. Menstruation is a symbol of a pregnancy that didn’t make it, an egg that never paired up to become a person. It’s a period of mourning for some and a symbol of death, loss of life. Anyone that comes into contact with death is ritually unclean, including men when they have nocturnal emissions. Men and women have to wait until they are no longer in contact with death, and have to go to a Mikveh, a ritual bath for immersion. They dunk themselves, say a blessing, and are now ritually clean and aren’t restricted.

I heartily agree with most of your post, however mammals have incredibly varied Issue is cycles. The human cycle is monthly whereas canine cycle is biannual. Another difference is that the appearance of blood in a canine indicates fertility rather than inferility. Some mammals can only reproduce once a year being fertile only for a few weeks unless hormones are artificially manipulated eg. Foxes, sheep. Others can carry multiple litters to term in a year having a short gestation period as well as frequent ovulation e.g. Mice, Rabbits. Mammals are very varied.

    1. The mikveh is for married people. It is used at other times, but not so much in relation to menstruation. (Also, it’s important to note, the “defilement” talk around it is unique to a few, Ill-informed people. You can follow this ritual of avoiding touch without shaming women or men for natural, bodily functions) 2. The cloth is used right bed the wedding, correct. 3. The engagements are typically pretty short, and yes, you would plan it based on your cycle. Some even use birth control to regulate it so they can plan when it will be in relation to the wedding, but a lot of people choose to do that for their weddings.

If they do not have a problem with it because of their belief in God, then we have to respect that. In my own beliefs as a Christian woman, we are not to remarry after divorce (I divorced my late ex-husband because of abuse), as it is seen as adultery because in the eyes of God, when you married, you became as one with your spouse---what God has joined, let no man put asunder. Unless you are, go back and get an education. Do you consider a cut bleeding finger to be unclean? why is any different. The only thing is that its blood being expelled from the body because the uterus was made ready for an implantation of a fertilised egg. If that doesnt happen, why is it unclean. Its blood clots. Its natural and normal. And definately not unclean. Its make be gross to some, but how can something that was clean and ready for an implantation for your baby, then become unclean? It says more about woman who believe this absolute make invention than it does about the men who invented it. In Japan a man was dying from a heart attack at a SUMO WRESTLING MATCH. 2 female drs came to resuscitate him on the mat. @@tuktuk3142 thats because men have said it ALL OVER THE WORLD. MEN. NOT WOMAN. MEN. AND WOMAN BELIEVE IT BECAUSE MEN HAVE BEEN SAYING IT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF RELIGION. It doesnt make it true. And what will happen if you go into temple while menstrauting? WILL the sky fall in? Will you get struck by lightening? Will you die? What? What bullshit is that that happens. Jews are told that if you eat bacon you will get violently ill and most probably die and many people who leave the faith, will eat a bacon sandwich and run to toilet, in preparation for them to start vomiting. It doesnt happen because its not true. A woman is not unclean if she menstruates. I dont believe that. Because its a male construct. Why are you unclean, when all your body is doing is expelling blood from a uterus which wa preparing for an in plantation for a fertilised egg. Why does it suddenly become unclean? Its the same atttitude they have against females in India and aborting female fetus’s and if you cant see the similarity in what MEN say about woman’s and do to them, just because they are woman. That is your focus. Not on stupid dirty unclean blood which is BULLSHIT.

Women? they make too big a materrial demand on a wedding/ maybe 5 or so hours. and so little invested for the days and years after. All these retailers and caterers shelling for the event, even the cards the video the photos etc. Weddings over $50,000 are often found. Just a matter of wealth And desire to spend what they have. Immature and naive but made to understand the commitment must be made. Duty and intimidation. Like the old days, you had few choices, you did it, but it was not a pretentios Hollywood extravaganza; it was an important family festival.

When it’s the one day of your life that you are celebrated, then of course it’s a big thing. When the world wants you to be married and produce babies, when one doesn’t gets treated as an entity in one’s own right; then this is your day. Your only day.

There is nothing impure about menstruation. This is toxic misogyny. Jesus came to deliver us from this legalistic misogyny. He loved and embraced women as His friends and disciples and had no use for this nonsense. In Christ, there is no male or female, Jew or gentile. There is all embracing, universal Love that honors women and respects women's bodies, rather than stigmatizing normal biological functions
