You don't need an engagement ring. We couldn't afford one and by the time we could, why bother? My engagement ring was his belt from ROTC - still have the belt buckle. He is gone now, died of cancer after 44 glorious years, and I wear my simple gold wedding band and his band. Things don't matter, he mattered. He was what I wanted more than any wedding band.
