Marriage Rescue Is A Reality Show That Shouldn't Exist

Комедия

Well, for better or worse, I have returned to Jon Taffer. This time, I thought we'd take another look at Marriage Rescue. I love this show because it's the definition of reality television. It takes a concept that is overwhelmingly niche and gives it a spin that absolutely no one asked for. So yeah... let's watch it.

One thing i forgot to mention is how poorly the show edited around amber. Even tho they both had poor styles of communication i feel like it put her in a much worse light. idk lmk what yall think.

Ehhh they both seemed like trash people imo and she definitely wasn't doing herself any favors by going off every time he said anything. EAH in this episode, except /maybe/ Daniel who seemed like he was just genuinely trying to stop being an alcoholic 24/7

He was in the wrong, BUT,,,,, she handled it in a way that made everything worse. When he says he doesn't have a gambling problem, he isn't lying, he's just delusional. Addicts don't always know they're addicted. Instead of trying to combat the issue together, and try to make him understand the situation, she's assuming he already knows, and is actively choosing to lie. She doesn't want to communicate, because throughout this she thinks anything that doesn't align with her projection of how he must feel is him lying to hurt her?? and the dude thinks that shutting up will help, which it wont because lack of communication is what causes her to assume, and etc. The anger doesn't come from nowhere, but its a result of miscommunication on both ends.

Not watched the full thing yet, but the first couple only having been married for 2 years and their social lives falling apart because he decided to stop drinking screams volumes to me. I suspect the guy thought marriage meant she would settle down and stop drinking, and she thought he liked those things which was why they got together.

@@b4stard_sweet Not sure what you mean tbh. It's extremely common for recovering alcoholics to shut themselves away from temptation. I'm not saying either of them were addicts, just that they failed to communicate what each other wanted. Reality TV is tough because the editors have an idea in their heads for how to portray these people that might not align with the truth. He was painted as a paranoid shut in, but all we got to support that was her testimony and some selected shots of him sat on a couch playing video games with a camera crew looking at him the whole time.

How dare she be fed up after years of mistreatment and not immediately latch onto his every word, not like he's likely apologized before only to go right back to gambling and lying. Her only issue is the fact that she kept choosing to stay with him when he's shown he isn't going to change. only like 5 minutes in so far so idk if the guy in the first couple talks about this later, but personally as a former alcoholic (two years sober, whoop whoop!) sometimes it's HARD to be around people who drink? like the whole "not seeing my friends as often" thing... i get that. if drinking socially is how your friends hang out together and you're in recovery, it Sucks to be around. it's just a constant reminder of the addiction you're trying to kick. especially if your social circle doesn't respect your decision, or care enough to remember it. i mean, i still have family that forgets i'm sober and try to offer me alcohol any time there's a family gathering. and when the only person holding you accountable is YOU... it can be hard to maintain sobriety when everyone you care about is tempting you away from it. it's a very isolating feeling to realize your support network only supports you conditionally, and that condition is the very thing you need support not to do.

I feel like the aspect of sobriety that isn't discussed enough is how isolating it can be. I know I'm responsible for my own sobriety. It's not on anyone else to keep me sober. But it makes it so hard to be social and included. The holidays are especially hard. I had to leave christmas early, because my family were all drinking. and I just cried in the car on the way home. It's such a hard spot to be in, because you don't want to spoil anyone else's fun, so you just have to take yourself away. I'm lucky that my family and friends are respectful of my sobriety and boundaries around it. That doesn't make it any less lonely when friends go out to bars or have parties without me.

Super recommend naltrexone if you ever want to try medication. Leaving is also totally valid. Triggers are weird, but it does get easier with time. You got this. You don't try people for a crime for having a panic attack lmao, the war on drugs was just a way to get poor (often POC) people into prison, where they could be used as borderline slave labor. But because of that, who knows how many people have died because of preventable or treatable overdoses that went untreated for their friends not knowing what to do. It's a bad situation, and the war on drugs has been nothing but a failure. Hell, one of the biggest proponents of it, Reagan, almost single handedly allowed the crack cocaine epidemic to happen. Look into the Iran Contra affair, if you haven't heard of it. I digress, but this stuff just gets me so heated because of how many lives are ruined, lost, or too far gone because of this bullshit.

Gamblers can literally be as horrible as people addicted to substances. I fully understand why Amber is at that point of just over it, especially if her husband has had the gambling problem for over some time already. Like you will build a wall against all the apologies and coaxing. Just to then take from your joint savings, sell your stuff, takes loans out or just straight up steal.

The first guy who quit drinking still seemed into his wife. I feel bad for him. There's probably so much more to the no love-making rule than we know. The wife held a lot of contempt for him and the fact that he "wasn't Daniel after he quit drinking" Speaking of contempt, it's one of the 4 horsemen of relationships and the ONLY one that means a relationship is doomed to fail, even if it's the only one present. Amber showed contempt for Ricardo, they're doomed to hate each other forever or get a divorce. I feel bad for their kids. Both couples in the last video showed contempt for each other. Especially the one couple with FOUR KIDS. FOUR. KIDS. i feel so bad for them too. Everyone reading this, drink some water :]

“Temper tantrums” - Said about a woman who has dealt with a habitual liar for years, who literally has been putting their entire future/ family at risk and THEN plays the victim any time the one person who has stuck with him that entire time even remotely criticizes him. Yeah both sides… Can’t imagine why she looks “crazy” or “just as bad”, that cant possibly be a documented abuse tactic edit: this time he’s actually apologizing- K cant imagine not right away believing someone who is “so sorry for real this time” when… that’s not something someone would an addiction would literally say all the time before falling back to the same behaviours 😭 somewhat of an unhinged take there

Its not uncommon for us to lose our sex drives after we quit drinking or drugs. Indescriminate sex was a big part of my addiction, it was routine to go out and drink/smoke/shoot myself into oblivion then go find a local slam pig to feel some type of human connection. When i quit the drugs it became alot more important to me to make personal connections over sexual connections. Luckily my wife understands this. We have sex, just not often and not nearly as often as she would like, but outside of that we have a strong loving relationship. A relationship doesn't have to be all about sex, but im not surprised that one founded on partying would struggle when the sex stops.

As a recovering alcoholic myself, my partner has been a massive support for me. Before I had my 'realisation' and knew that i need to make changes to be healthy, me and my partner would go out quite a bit. My partner still loves going out and having a wild time, and I've realised that I dont. And you know what, we make that work. We have cute dates nights that are alcohol free, and other times he'll have a great time out in bars while i stay home and get an early night. My partner understanding and supporting me has been essential in me recovering, but that communication means that there's no Fomo or insecurity.

as a recovering alcoholic, when i tell you it’s odd to have to sedate yourself to talk something out…ooh…it’s *odd*. if you need to literally sedate yourself with booze to handle a convo, you should probably see a therapist who specialises in addiction about that dawg. it screams a spiral downward to becoming an addict.

Oh my gosh finally watched it and I'm so happy with my choices 😂😂 When I was getting very serious about ending the marriage, I offered up marriage counseling as a final attempt to fix things. He told me, in all seriousness "Jenni. You *know* if we go to marriage counseling I'm smart enough to manipulate the therapist, make you look crazy so he'll take my side." 😂 I told him I guess we're getting divorced. I honestly can't say for sure who's "side" Jon would have taken, but my ex husband would have put up a huge attempt to make me look crazy. Thank The Tiny Baby Jesus for divorce.😂😂🎉

My fiancé is an alcoholic that’s been in recovery for 5 years. When he went sober that first year was tough on both of us. They’re learning to do life sober and you’re navigating that. When someone is so used to having that crutch/blinder for every activity socializing, intimacy, working, etc doing it completely sober causes so much anxiety. During this time I had to put some of my needs on the back burner and give my partner time. Millie really needs Al-anon because it really is hard on the partner too, he’s a different person now and you have to get familiar with this person. Some relationships don’t last, we’re the only couple out of our group that made it but it took a lot of hard work. Millie deserves some grace because without al-anon all of us would talk like her tbh.

To put the whole: “I liked when he drank more” thing into like a POV as to why she maybe liked it more; my boyfriend for example gets really sweet and loving and like cutesy with me when he’s not sober. Of course he’s always sweet to me it’s just a bit easier for him to soften up a little bit when he’s drinking, and I’m not gonna lie sometimes I look forward to when we go out and have drinks because he’s gonna be more affectionate. So maybe it’s a similar situation with her? Idk tho, being mad at him for being sober is completely messed up.

As someone who fairly recently got sober with their partner, I understand how difficult it can be. You have to adjust to how to interact with not just your partner, but also everyone else in your life. But you DO learn. I applaud Daniel for doing so, and I hope Millie can do the same, if not for Daniel, but also her kids and herself. Alcoholism destroys. I used to have uncontrollable shakes in the morning until I had three shots of vodka in me, but now my husband and I enjoy each other’s company with clarity and took up hobbies together. I do hope Millie gets sober, because on the other side it gets so much better.
