MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 380 : Blur's "Parklife" turns 30! 25 April 2024
Blur's third album was released 30 years ago today, "Parklife" becoming inescapable, vastly outselling Pink Floyd and leading the transition of culture from Nirvana to the 'Britpop' ascent of Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede. Lead by "Girls And Boys", followed by "To The End", "Parklife", and "End Of A Century", the lightning-in-the-bottle moment saw Blur connect violently to the world they were coldly judging, with a slight cruelty in the lyrics alongside a surplus of below par B-sides and a surprising and clear riposte from Pulp the following year. Gloves off! 25 April 2024.

I'd put Frank Langella up their with Raul, I thought his performance as Skeletor was magnificent
I was blown away by Magpie when I finally heard it on the 2012 reissue. I think it’s a wonky gem. All the other Parklife b sides are not good but shout out to the Hitch-Hikers Guide sound in Peter Panic.
On the Chris Morris radio show he sang Suffragette City over Jubilee and it went perfectly. I first saw a clip of the Jubilee chorus on a top of the pops end of the year show and thought it sounded great. When I heard the full song I thought it was less great.
Just made me laugh out loud Mark. I was only into Blur because my girlfriend was and I too found it shiny and cruel. Great, great episode though. Clever AND funny. I think Pulp are the real survivors of the Britpop bullshit bingo debacle. Suede, Pulp Autuers, all aged well. Blur, nah. Oasis. Don't get me started. Can't wait for The Great Escape.
The more I look at the cover of this massive album the weirder it looks.

Looking forward to what other ‘94 albums you choose to discuss this year.. I enjoy your segues A LOT 😊 How do you keep all of those details and tidbits in your head? It’s amazing. I prefer Gorillaz to Blur.
