MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 197 : David Bowie's "Lodger" 1979.. 04 May 2022.

Notcast ep 197 : It's May 1979 (43 years ago!) and David Bowie's album "Lodger" has just been released.. and we do a deep dive on the LP, the not-quite-third-part-of-the-"Berlin-Trilogy", the singles "Boys Keep Swinging", "DJ", "Alabama Song", and the remix of "John I'm Only Dancing (Again)", the 2017 Tony Visconti remix, and the lyrical obsessions and callbacks all through Bowie's career focusing on nuclear apocalypse, death and mortality, mental illness, and identity... as well as side quests into mental health, World War II desert operations, and anything else I think of. 04 May 2022.

I was 17 when Lodger was released and underwhelmed by it. After an incredible run of albums: StationtoStation, The Idiot with Iggy Pop, Low and “Heroes”, Lodger seemed quite out of place. Now I appreciate it much more. It is minor masterpiece and Tony Visconti’s remix is a vast improvement on the original. If you haven’t seen or heard it, there’s a band; Shearwater, who covered Lodger in full live in studio. They brought an energy that made me realize what an incredible collection of songs Lodger really is. It can be found here on KZread. Very much worth it.

It's absolutely inessential. I like it, but it feels like a contractual whimsy rather than anything necessary.
