The people want to experience the comedian in their element, enjoying what they do. They need you to take the lead so they can be a passenger. If they sense fear it fucks up the power dynamic. If they see that you're taking cues from their reactions , it devalues you and gives them power.... which is bad. Then they won't laugh and you'll bomb. The best approach is always preparation. Figure out what kind of audience it is days before (if possible) and have plenty of non-controversial material to get them started, then you can push it.

rick's point about vine and AI at 58:08 is a great point. also the motion graphics of the "french guy" at 1:21:12 when mark said "we we". this pod is in a class of its own.

You're right, Mark's concerns are valid but the people that go deep and are "cringey" are sooo woe is me, boohoo, tortured artist about their experience. Mark isn't like that, he pulls back the curtain in a way that's very insightful.

This convo was one of my favorites of TYSO. I love when Rick is real serious.
Mark is consistently hungover
“Digger please” absolute gold
As someone who listens to other writing and comedy discussion type podcasts, you and Kevin getting into the nitty gritty of your writing, joke structure, stagecraft etc... was really great.

This is pure comedy gold. When Kevin Hart says "I don't want to queef on my own salad" i started crying of laughter on the bus. Also the editing here with the 8bit pixelated intro was awesome ❤
The camera cuts and zooms on this ep were top tier!!
“I don’t want to queef on my own salad” took me completely out. Love how Mark’s personality comes out on this pod. We love ya, Fatty!
16:53: "I'm like a virgin 'hey"! I don't know what that was- but I def appreciated it.
Mark says “My new stuff is bombing” Bro I just bought some tickets to see you😂😂
what a fantastic episode. I actually really love the inside baseball they floated around. love both these people

Harry Mack & Normand are 100% my Fav TYSO guests this year so far!
I love the fact that Rick sets up the blanket on the back of his chair every episode because he’s gotta tell that joke. Doesn’t get better than this guy 🤣
Of all the hilarious things these two get into, Mark Normand's sneeze sounding like a quack was what set me over the edge 😂 Great job, John Michael!

Either ends of the spectrum on production value!
Rick has a unique ability to explain things thoroughly and clearly with relative analogies, and it’s the absolute best to see Mark visibly connect with his theories. I love all of this. Im a huge fan of them both, comedy, and the process of comedians figuring out how to deliver and connect with an audience. Loved this whole thing.

That whole conversation about being misunderstood and living between hating your life or other people hating you is so relatable wow I love you two
