WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

It's always fascinating to see Christians say "Bart Ehrman is my favorite scholar, I go with the scholarship on whether any given bible story is true" and yet still believe in the resurrection. Does this guy think Bart Ehrman concludes that Jesus rose from the dead?

I was like Mark, constantly redefining god in an attempt to have him make sense. At 54 I finally stepped completely across the line saying to myself, if god was real I shouldn't have to be doing this. If there is a god and he wants me to believe, he knows where to find me.

Johnny. I attended Anglican church through most of my childhood, in 1970s Wales, + was never aware of the idea of Jesus saving us from our sins at all. Now that I know the words that refer to it, I know that it was in the Sunday service liturgy hidden behind big words, like "oblation" and "substitution", but I was oblivious to their meaning at the time. Though in my teens I saw the sacrifice saving us doctrine in the beliefs the Jehovah's and the Armstrongists, I just thought it was part of their own silliness. Was actually into my 20s before I realised it was the mainstream Christian idea .

If I recall correctly, original sin isn't in the Bible, it's a doctrine developed after the Bible. When I was Mormon, I didn't belive in original sin. The idea was that Jesus died to "pay for" each individual person's sins, and to make it possible for every one to be resurrected.

None of the early creeds (Apostles' Creed, Nicene Creed etc) say you must "believe" in the bible, or believe the bible is inerrant. I suppose you could suggest the creed writers took that for granted and hence didn't mention it, but the creeds mentioning believing in God which would be even more likely to be "taken for granted".

Great point by the guys; original sin to me is what makes christianity nothing more than an obvious protection racket: we are going to make up a problem you don’t really have, so you’ll give us power (& money) to fix your non-existent problem....I’m certainly not a christian so my opinion doesnt really matter , but when I consider it see there is only a few necessary core actual beliefs - existence of supreme being, existence of Jesus ( but not necessarily was the son of god), existence of original sin, that God resurrected him and that’s the ultimate destiny and objective of humans to be free from death. I would think if you don’t do believe any of those you probably can’t call yourself a christian?

I'd suggest original sin isn't very important to the idea of salvation. Speaking in terms of theology, not claiming to prove any of this just as an exercise in theology and philosophy, there's still all the immoral or I'd you prefer sinful things we as humans do. Are you a bad person? Hopefully not, I dont know you how can I say for sure, but every good person I have met or heard of has things they've done they aren't proud of and see as morally wrong. Even without original sin there's still all of those things we as a species do. Doesn't prove a divine iudgemrlent let alone God but would leave immoral behavior or sin to forgive. Could Jesus or his sacrifice do that different question but original sin isn't all that necessary

  • @taurculh69

God knows the future, right? So when he made heaven and put a tree there that no one was supposed to eat from HE KNEW that someone would eat from it even before he made Adam, because god can see the future. That alone should make you halt belief in a TON of things about the bible.
