Sad to hear of his death from previous comments. I only discovered him about 7 yrs ago-went right into a heavy lean on his great work for quite a long stretch. (this band is fantastic)
Totally amazing artist... he played in my home town of Falmouth and don't think most people had heard of him before this gig but he was so good... love to have a recording of this set..😎

Shameful they have grunge royalty playing while the sun is up.
I don't think he has a strong voice. On some of Mark's live stuff he just sounds weak, like he has a hard time controlling pitch and tone. Even if he did had a big influence and was part of the who's who back then it doesn't mean he's a good singer. But I LOVE the guys music - it resonates with me on so many levels. He's voice does add some flavor to his songs but it's not the reason I love his work. I still don't get why he's not up there with the heavy's - famous I mean. Then again, he has some humility that might be the reason he never (I think) tried to claw his way to the top.
@Malovane77

Well, it's evident that he's lost a bit of range from his days with the Screaming Trees. Not a whole lot, because he never had much, but some of the dynamics that made him known as the best voice in Washington during the grunge movement have been blown from alcohol, smoking (various things), and age. His deep raspy voice was always a favorite for that genre, and even with the reduced range it makes a very suitable blues voice in the vein of Johnny Cash now. Personally, I still find it very pleasing, even if a bit monotone. As for his success - well... as you allude to, he was a big deal locally in the Seattle scene. Made some success nationally, and even internationally with the Screaming Trees. I don't think he dealt with it very well. At the heart of grunge was kind a philosophy of being unsuccessful screw-ups, and Lanegan played that part. He was almost always on some drug or another while performing, and occasionally couldn't even perform. There's also the fact that his friends Lane Staley and Kurt Cobain died from overdose and suicide respectively. Despite Lanegan's lower profile nationally, these guys looked up to Lanegan, as he was not only a friend, but a bit of a mentor, and one of the major epicenters that created the genre. I can't know Marks feelings on the subject, but I would at least be wondering what actions of mine contributed to that. Also, I'd be looking at that and thinking - "shit... is that what success and fame brings? I damn near died myself. I'll pass"
