They began as a group of two brothers, Mark and David, who thought it might be fun to play with their friends. Mark’s influence helped them reach the top. He co-wrote or produced most of their major hits.
They didn’t face the struggles that some bands go through. There was no addiction to overcome or scandals to hide. Despite frequent changes to their members, there wasn’t much infighting in Dire Straights either.
The thing that brought them down was that they simply became too big. It was exhausting to play massive tours and come up with constant hits. The pressure was so great that it affected all the members’ family lives.
They took a hiatus until Mark eventually decided it was too much. The split was an amicable one because the rest of the band agreed.
Many of the members now have fruitful solo careers. Mark has a new studio where he loves to put out albums and collaborate with others.
That hasn’t stopped fans from clamoring for a reunion. They’d love to hear the classic Dire Straits style. Their former manager even gets offered large sums of money to make that happen.
The former frontman has been particularly vocal about it. He’s admitted he loved that time in his life, but he’s also shared his opinions about whether a reunion is a smart idea or even possible.

@@bradmodd7856 I think there needs to be some clarification, because the album and tour was well-received, it just wasn't thought to be of the same standard. But then, how could you top something like Brothers In Arms? It'd be a massive achievement to even do an album with as much success once. I think it's better to say - the album was great, it just wasn't Dire Straits-great. It was a commercial success, after all.

@@bradmodd7856 Fair enough, 'On Every Street' didn't manage to sell a whopping 30 million copies worldwide like it's predecessor 'Brothers In Arms' did (which would obviously be extremely difficult to do), but it still sold a very impressive 16 million copies in it's own right, which I don't think is too shabby at all. The sold out world tour that accompanied that LP was also probably their biggest ever in terms of sheer scale. So 'On Every Street' was hardly an underwelming flop.

There have been plenty of examples of bands reforming and giving renewed pleasure and experiences to their fans....it CAN be done, IF THE DESIRE IS THERE FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THE BAND.... What SHOULDN'T be done is trying to FORCE something - obviously THAT is never going to work.... Sadly it seems that at the moment and possibly forever, the latter would be the case as regards Dire Straits.... but you CAN'T BLAME fans of theirs for dreaming about it and never giving up hope!!❤❤❤❤....

Dire Straits is absolutely one of my favorite bands. I loved them since 9th grade when Sultans of Swing first hit the airways and I was in awe of the sheer talent, unique sound and control the band had. In America, he wins the most underrated guitarist. Maybe now that new good rock bands are practically nonexistent and the "classic" rockers are getting more attention. Also missed in this video is they played LIVE AID when their mega hit CD Brothers In Arms was released. Perfect Timing. And correction for the video- Money For Nothing is on this CD. I am looking forward to seeing Mark Knopler if really comes to Philadelphia atea again. It seems he keeps his tours lately mostly in the UK. I am now putting on my Making Movies CD, now that I am craving Dire Straits. Another underrated cd that is brilliant!

I thought he may have permanently retired after that, but perhaps not. Sometimes we want to relive our youth, or moment. Its selfish to keep people "in a box" for nostalgia's sake. Savor those moments, and understand artists like to be known for work, but dont want to be 1 trick pony either.

Interesting that he started finger picking the guitar because of an old beat up acoustic guitar he was playing. Finger picking allows you to do certain things that you just can't do with a pick, or at least it sounds different and it definitely became Mark's unique trademark.

@seanoreilly1734 I have a feeling that statement was made by John Illsley. I went to see John in Concert around three years ago and he did a really interesting history presentation covering his career and of course, his time with Dire Straits including quite a few of his personal photographic slides. During the presentation he mentioned that he spends a lot of time now painting and had his own studio and displayed some of his work at the Concert, so I think that the quote was probably his, not Mark's.

Do you remember the kid who turned you on to the sweatbands for your wrists to keep your hand dry and sweat off your bridge. You were just a guy with better than average guitar skills. If you want to run cool you've got to run some heavy heavy fuel.

Too many OAP bands well past their sell by date , living on past glories and trying to still rake in the money while the name still brings in the dollars whilst fuelling their inflated egos . Old men playing at being 20 something Rock stars again is really rather pathetic . Good for Dire Straits for not going down that road .

Dire Straits was never a 2 man band, Alan Clark, Guy Fletcher,Terrry Williams, Chris White, Hal Lindes and Jack Sonni were all official band members. Mell Collins WAS a never a member of the band even though he played with Dire Straits in concerts. And Guy Fletcher has played with Marks solo band since the beginning. Also Mark has released 10 solo albums, so you were also wrong there.
