This film should have simply introduced Venom and then saved him for the 4th film. It would have cut 45 minutes off of this one, and the 4th one would have practically written itself.

Can't believe no one messaged in to correct him on the "quadrilogy" thing. The correct term is "tetralogy", the other term was created as a marketing gimmick for an Alien box set.

I have to disagree with Mark. Army of Darkness is fantastic. It's camp, but not too camp, it's funny and well put together and it is perhaps one of the most quotable movies of the last thirty years.

Parts of it are funny, but the last half hour, where the movie turns into a cheap-o fantasy action film, is dreadfully boring. And the fact that Ash turns into a hero who saves the day doesn't feel right, either. It's nowhere near as tone-deaf or shitty as Ash vs Evil Dead though!

My major complaint about this movie is that Peter Parker turns into Brian Molko and goes emo, which apparently is the same thing as "ebil". And yeah, too many villains.

I completely understand....and it's difficult to argue against that lol. I suppose prefer Batman Begins primarily because of Cillian Murphy's performance. Also there are scenes in TDK that I believe are unnecessary, for example the scene with the two ships should've been cut [i thought this when I saw the film in the cinema and was quite heartened to find out that Kermode had the same feeling] - I didn't have that feeling with Batman Begins. I still really, really liked it though :)

It's been said so many times.. there was just too much to juggle, and the characters Raimi was juggling had such extensive backstory that could not be handled well in one film. Either Sandman should have been axed or Eddie Brock. I can't believe that everyone agreed to move forward instead of someone taking a stand and saying "there is just too much going on, we have to cut a character."

Didn't Sam say he didn't want to have Venom in it but the producers made him shoehorn it in. I think I heard that...

Too many villains, big mess. Just too many things going on at once, the whole dark spiderman plot (which was done poorly) would have needed more time for the audience to care, and venom needed to be fleshed out. They might have managed to get a Sandman + Green Goblin's son story to work okay, or they might have got a Venom + dark spiderman story to work okay, but all meshed together and its a huge mess.

  • @randomsamno9

I think you have to kinda discount the existence of Evil Dead 1 & 2 to enjoy Army of Darkness, because its not anything like either of those. If you go in expecting a stand alone cult movie you can enjoy it, if you go in expecting Evil Dead 3 you might be expecting the wrong thing.

I heard Somewhere probably eleswhere on KZread that The Sony bigwigs wanted either sandman as or venom as the bad guy dispite Rami wanting the other, So he was forced into featuring a villian he didn't want in the film & had no intrest in. I still even though this 3rd Rami Spider-Man film is not at all a great movie, think it way better than either of the Garfield (sony product placement filled) films. Sam Rami was/is a Spider-Man fan & knew what he was doing, if left to it alone I would have expected a much better film. It was only because the donkeys in charge & above Rami fiddled with the story we ended up with the mess that was SM3 & then Rami is left with the blame & his reign of director is quashed.

The Amazing Spider-Man is better then Spider-Man3 Spider-Man 3 is even with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 what made TASM2 not suck all the way was the execution with Gwen's death which was fantastically done, other then that they're even

Odd that Mark is complimenting the physicality of Spiderman 2 when that film was full of CGI fights too. The best fight is Goblin vs Spidey from the first film, at the end of the film, in the derelict building. No CGI, a proper fight that kicks the ass of anything from S2 and S3 and the new ones.

It wouldn't be a Mark Kermode 'disappointed' review if it didn't end with, "there was too much going on, I was getting confused and worst of all - I was bored!" Disagree on Spiderman 3: I still enjoyed it, I thought its ambitions were largely realised and it was better than its reputation suggests, but I still like his and Simon's reviews.

yeah it was a good film a bit camp and the cgi is definitely outdated but still pretty good and it got clooser to the comics. However the new Amazing Spiderman is the best adaptation so far and finaly we've got to see spiderman cracking jokes when he's fighting the bad guys i was smilling from ear to ear:)

I didn't have enough space to elaborate. I understand that TDK is a far superior film to Spiderman 3 [which, as you correctly say, really is a mess] and don't want to equate the 2 too much. I just felt that I would've enjoyed it more if the only new character was the joker, that's all....it's still a great film, although I prefer Batman Begins :)

The studio forced Venom's inclusion in this film, but I think its fatal flaw is that Raimi should have had the wherewithal to say, ok, if Venom has to be in it, then I'll leave Sandman for the next one. Too much going on.

He's wrong about Army of Darkness:it carries across the comic book sensibilities of the second film and creates something totally original and entertaining. Perhaps the funnies of the Evil Dead films. Also, I can't help but feel, Mark missed out on some of the themes of spider man 3 such as drug addiction. It is still a film about adolescence and accepting responsibility.

Same problem in this as in the Dark Knight for me: too many characters. In Spiderman 3 they could lose Sandman and in Dark Knight I feel they could've made a better film if they didn't have Harvey Dent/Two Face. Kermode correct about Spiderman 2, it's miles better than the first Spiderman movie. I love ED 1 & 2 but I think that Sam Raimi's best film as director is A Simple Plan, just watched again recently for and just wonderful :)

The film’s issues are the effects, score & Topher Grace’s gimmicky & cheesy performance, however the film is well acted, well characterised, intriguing & well directed, but the film’s the weakest in the Sam Raimi series. (64%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)

Even if you happen to like the rest of the film - I don't - you have to agree that emo-pete and the dance sequence is lae, poorly handled and uniteresting. And Venom...why have Sandman and Green Goblin when you have him? He is so much cooler than the other two, and as mr. Kermode said, having so many things going on made the film lose focus. At least Iron, Avengers, Thor and the X-men films(excluding 3 and origins) were great.
