Mark Kermode reviews Terminator Genisys

Фильм және анимация

Mark Kermode reviews Terminator Genisys. John Connor sends his best friend Kyle Reese back through time to 1984 to rescue his mother Sarah from a murderous cyborg known as a Terminator. However, when Reese arrives he finds Sarah armed and ready for combat, under the protection of an ageing Terminator known as ‘Pops’. The timeline has been corrupted, nothing is as it should be and all bets are off as a brand new threat arises.
Please tell us what you think of the film -- or Mark’s review of the film below. We love to include your views on the show every Friday.

In the first Terminator Kyle had no idea what the T800 looked like. "I had to wait till he moved on you before I could zero him" he explained, but in the clip he somehow recognised the Terminator the second he saw him. If I'm able to pick apart one 45 second clip from this movie it doesn't bode well for the whole thing. I think I'll pass on this one.

The plot spoiler was in the trailer because Paramount just want to make lots of money before 2019 and James Cameron gets the rights back. They don't care how much Terminator Genysis made because they are going to make three movies regardless. Which I find slightly annoying. If they don't care whether it succeeds or fails why not just make one really good film. Or is that just too easy

You know what was the most numerable thing about Jai Courtney in T5 ? Its that for most of the film he has bare feet. That's how generic and dull he was, and that's not even a new gimmick because Bruce Willis did the same thing in Die Hard back in the 80s and of course all those LOTR and Hobbit movies.

  • @nifralo2752
    @nifralo27526 жыл бұрын

Notice Jai Courtney is not mentioned once prob because the most memorable thing about him is that he's barefooted for the bulk of the movie. What an orginal action star gimmick shame they already did it in Die Hard 30 years ago!

As far as i'm concerned there's only 1 Terminator... The original. The first film is SO GOOD! Its so lean, and so scary! I watched it the other day, and i realised again how good it is... That said. Paramount want to make 3 Genysiys films. A new trilogy... Jesus... With Arnie coming back to be in the second Jenisys to collect his paycheck. I honestly can't comment if its better than T3 or Salvation. Because at least those films worked on a fundamental level of. No matter how stupid the story is, it makes sense. This film has so many plotholes you could plug it with one of Arnie's pecs!

the good hustler The second Terminator is better than the original? I disagree with you. In the first film Arnie plays a kind of slasher movie monster, in a sort of neo-noir sci-fi horror. Take one scene, no, i'll take 2 scenes. The scene in Tech Noir. Its a master class in tension and release. The rising tone in the music, broken with Kyle Reese's shotgun, the Terminator shooting the civilians. Its panicky, its genuinely scary, 9 year old me was crapping myself. You see the blood, its anything but glamorous. And the second scene i'll take is when Ginger, Sarah Connor's housemate is killed along with her boyfriend. It, like the Technoir scene, not in that order, the club shooting takes place after he drops in at her apartment. Its intimate, close up. And equally scary. Now... T2, there is no scene that matches it in terms of horror, or scare. And i know what you might say "but T2 is a masterclass in how to direct action!" And to that. I will agree. Its a seriously amazing action film. But personally, i never considered the original film an out and out action film. Its more of a thriller, neo-noir, slasher, sci-fi. So i just think it strayed way too far from the winning formula in The Terminator. Like the newest Terminator, i felt no real danger or threat. You have a robot, fighting a robot... In T1, you have 2 humans of flesh and blood, trying to outsmart this machine that is always thinking 2 moves ahead.

Fábio Monteiro To be honest, i would be lying if i said that the CGI from T2 hasn't stood up. Because it has. But i still think the puppetry and animatronics and makeup from T1 still look as great as ever. Its just the 2 films are too different. In a way you can't compare the 2. But obviously, as i've stated above the script from T1 is just so lean! There isn't a single ounce of fat on it.

MrBannystar To be honest, i kind of do. I love Alien for its slow pace, and suspenseful feel. And i do prefer Alien to Aliens. But similarly to Aliens and T2, i can enjoy each film for what it brings to the table (if i just ignore the original film) i just get the feeling that Aliens is a kind of Vietnam war allegory, with the lowtech defeating the hightech. Plus of course Aliens gets a little while to get going, but when it gets up to speed its relentless! Its far more fast paced than Alien, which again, in a way i like. But i still like Alien better, for what that brings to the table.

I recently watched this movie in 3D on IMAX and loved it...Terminator: Genisys has essentially created it's own paradox within the Terminator timeline... I thoroughly enjoyed Terminator: Genisys and I look forward to seeing both Emilia Clarke & Arnold Schwarzenegger return. ...Your review sounds alot like all the other critics of the movies that did not like it and had too many negative things to say about it...My personal advice is to not listen to any of those critics and to go see the movie for yourself...I actually am a fan of Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones and was thrilled to watch her take on Sarah Connor...Many might have been upset by the events of this movie, but to be honest it is a time travel movie and unfortunately when you change past events it does effect future events as well and you don't always get the happy ending you wanted or expected...And if you are a fan of time travel movies than you should know that future is not set in stone...If past events can be changed to create an alternative future timeline than the same thing can happen when you travel into the future and alter an event that effects the past.

T3 is fun popcorn action if you turn your brain off and semi-ignore the name "Connor" even as it pushes the timeline forward. I haven't seen any other ones.]

What I found strange in this film was that i really couldn't stand kyle reese or sarah connor. Their interactions were cringe worthy! They didn't appear to like each other whatsoever unlike the first film where it felt natural that they fell in love almost immediately. Also, they've messed around with the timelines in this story so much now that it's full of ridiculous plot holes and even more ridiculous contrivances to try and cover up some of the worst holes.

I'll see it because I've seen the other 4. I love the first 2. 3 I didn't think was terrible. Not good, but it had some fun sequences, and Arnold is fun to watch. Also the actual ending when judgement day happens, and John Connor assumes leadership, is a great ending. Terminator Salvation is incredibly boring. Dull directing, dull action scenes, just dull everything really. Christian Bale tried, but Sam Worthington is so incredibly bland as an actor (like Jai Courtney). I dislike the trailers for Genisys, but I'm going to see it anyway, as why the hell not. The IMC cinema in Dun Laoghaire Ireland has tickets for €5 on Thursday if you book online, so I'll probably get that, as I don't really want to pay full price for it. Maybe the film will surprise me. Or maybe the film will be hot garbage like the trailers suggest, and make me realize that Terminator 1 & 2 are so much better than it, and that you can't fuck up greatness. I guess Arnold will be fun, as he normally always is, and the first 20 minutes seem at least interesting.

I personally thought T3 and the TV show were better than this. In Genisys there was a little bit of subtext to the movie i liked correlating how we're controlled by our phones and devices to skynet taking us over, but essentially this is an action movie and unfortunately the action scenes we're bland and unoriginal. T-1000 chases - was done better in T2 school bus chase - the crane truck scene from T3 was better Helicopter chase - already done in T2, but much better and less ridiculous and i just hate how the franchise has turned pg-13, the terminators used to be scary because of what they could do to you. Now they'll just pick you up and throw you.

Whilst the film maybe very well acted, the film suffers A confusing & unfocused story, muddled direction & A poor lack of storytelling. (29%) (1.5/5 stars) (negative)

A little better than Salvation, which was the worst movie I have ever seen in the theater.

Disagree, I think T3 and TS were both better than this... at least those had story lines that actually made a lick of sense.

Avoid at all costs, if you love T1+2. I actually fell asleep in the cinema watching this. Lots of action but very bland acting and bad/confused story - no empathy for characters and so no real suspense/threat/reason to care.

The clip looks more like a rubbish Freiberg and Seltzer parody movie of Terminator...

Just watched this. As I suspected it is utter tripe. Easily on my list of the worst movies ever made.

Saw it today and really enjoyed it. Obviously nowhere near as good as the first two. Lazy review mark, i think you're over using your smack bang wallop a bit too much, this film actually had a interesting approach to the time travelling, different past / future idea , and the action was decent not like one of the transformers or iron man sequels , which is smack bang wallop clang clang clang etc . I really think you're over simplifying your reviews these days

Is it bad Genisys was my favorite Terminator Film? T3 was ok (not great but not as bad as people say) and I loved T2. I actually found the original film highly boring. Salvation was boring too.
